Immediate Opening β Experienced Litigation Attorney
Miller Waxler LLP is seeking a Professional Liability Attorney with experience in handling business litigation. The candidate would be joining a growing, dynamic firm of eleven attorneys that prioritize teamwork and the delivery of high-quality legal representation to the firmβs clients.

Responsibilities will depend on the candidate, but will ideally include the management of a full litigation caseload and working cases from inception through resolution, including communicating with clients and providing status reports, taking and defending depositions, and participating in trials. The candidate will handle a wide array of professional liability matters, including malpractice cases and claims against attorneys, insurance agents/brokers, accountants, architects, and engineers.
The ideal candidate is a self-starter, able to multi-task, and comfortable working with litigation deadlines. Professional Liability defense, State and Federal court experience, discovery, deposition, law and motion, independent case handling and trial experience are preferred. The firm is looking for candidates with 6 or more years of California litigation experience.
Location is flexible. The firm has offices in Downtown Los Angeles and Brentwood. Hybrid and remote work are also options.
Salary will be commensurate with experience. Target hiring range is $180,000 - $225,000.

Qualifications and Skills:

About the Company
Dependency Legal Services (DLS) is a non-profit law firm committed to serving children and parents involved in child abuse and neglect cases. We provide legal advocacy for families across six California counties, representing clients in high-volume, fast-paced dependency proceedings. Attorneys in this role will work directly with clients, providing in-court representation and advocating at all stages of juvenile dependency cases.
About the Role
A mentor parent is a mother or father with previous lived experience in the child welfare system who has successfully reunified with their children and completed their legal case. This includes individuals who have successfully completed a voluntary family maintenance case. A mentor parent cannot have any open legal case, and the court cannot have jurisdiction over their family. If substance use disorder was an issue in their juvenile dependency case, the mentor parent must possess a personal commitment to a clean and sober lifestyle and understand recovery programming.
The mentor will serve the client as part of a team that includes the clientβs attorney and a social worker. The attorney will provide direction to the mentor. The mentor will meet with clients in the community and support them in both their criminal justice-related matters and child welfare matters. They will help the client navigate the court system by providing their own experiences as a parent in the system.
Responsibilities
- Assist clients in accessing services and identifying community supports with the goal of reducing further child welfare involvement.
- Visit clients in the field (e.g., drug treatment facilities, jails, etc.).
- Collaborate with the Dependency Legal Services Pre-Prevention team, local child welfare agency, and other preventative service programs, while also maintaining client confidentiality to best meet the clientβs needs.
- Coach clients on how to interface with service providers in the child welfare setting.
- Carefully track their time and report their time for grant eligibility purposes through our JCATS electronic file system.
- Meet regularly with the multi-disciplinary legal team for case consultations and program development.

The Legal Assistant will provide comprehensive administrative support to multiple Partners, as well as senior and junior members of the Legal Team. Job Responsibilities:

- Preparing draft court documents, including but not limited to complaints, answers, discovery, briefs, motions, motions for summary judgment, correspondence and memos.

The Docket Coordinator will exercise discretion and independent judgment in facilitating actions required to efficiently and accurately calendar all docket activities. - Communicate quickly and clearly via email and phone to inquiries from attorneys, legal executive assistants, and paralegals regarding docket entries, court procedures, and filings.
- Participate in professional organizations that promote the on-going education of Federal, State and Local rule changes. Prepare and distribute announcements regarding same to local attorneys and legal support staff.
- Work with the Litigation Services Counsel to implement procedures for systems, processes, technology and services to ensure continual service enhancements, cost reductions, and organizational consistency with firm policy. Recommend changes in procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the Department.
- Ensure consistent application of firm policy and adherence to risk management guidelines, as defined by the firmβs legal malpractice carrier, to minimize potential malpractice exposure.
- Create Docket system electronic reminders and appointments/events on the attorney and firm calendar. Create and distribute printed reports, as requested, by attorneys.
- Answer and process incoming telephone calls and respond to e-mail inquiries disseminating information relative to the courts, judgeβs standing orders and Docket Department procedures.
- Assist with training of new Docket staff.
- Periodic review of case status (i.e. active or closed). Create and distribute reports to attorneys, obtain information and update database.
- Provide Electronic Case filing (CM/ECF) support to legal staff. Maintain knowledge base of e-filing requirements and procedures for all courts serviced by the Los Angeles and Dallas attorneys. Maintain tracking log of attorney court registrations, including expiration dates, and notify attorneys to ensure no lapse in registration. Assist attorneys with updating their PACER account for NextGen filing.
- Maintain accurate attorney filing credentials, create court admission accounts for attorneys, and troubleshoot credential issues.
- Forward court documents and incoming mail/email relating to active cases as provided by attorneys and legal support staff to appropriate firm personnel. Coordinate with the Record Center to ensure pleadings are indexed in the Records Management System.
- Perform searches for court information through on-line service providers such as Pacer, Courthouse News and others.
- Ensure exceptional client service levels are achieved in delivery of services to secretaries, paralegals, attorneys, and vendors.
- Participate in Docket Department meetings. Provide assistance with implementation of new technology and procedures affecting the firm.
- Ability and willingness to handle after hours filings when needed. Occasional overtime may be required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Associateβs Degree; college degree preferred. Three or more years of progressive docket-related experience preferably in a large law firm environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience and knowledge of docket tasks and procedures required. Strong knowledge of Federal/State/Local court rules required. Familiarity with Electronic Case Filing (CM/ECF) procedures a plus. Familiarity with Court Alert a plus.
