THE MISSION OF THIS ROLE

You will analyze materials, systems, and assemblies in high-performance residential wood-frame homes to identify and mitigate potential health risks to homeowners.

You will evaluate:

• Chemical emissions from building materials (VOC/SVOC, formaldehyde, plasticizers, isocyanates, flame retardants, etc.)
• Moisture and hygrothermal behavior of wall, roof, and slab assemblies
• Fire and combustion toxicity risk (e.g., hydrogen cyanide from polyurethane, hydrogen chloride and dioxins from PVC, etc.)
• System interactions that create unintended health consequences
• HVAC design, ventilation adequacy, pressure dynamics, and microbial growth risk a plus, but not necessary

You will help ensure our homes are not only energy-efficient — but genuinely healthy, durable, and defensible from a building science perspective.

Material Risk Evaluation

• Review and analyze insulation systems, sealants, flooring, cabinetry, structural components, and finishes
• Evaluate emissions data, SDS documentation, and combustion byproducts
• Identify high-risk materials and recommend safer alternatives

Moisture & Assembly Analysis

• Evaluate vapor profiles, drying potential, dew point location, and condensation risk
• Assess roof decks, wall assemblies, slab conditions, and foundation details
• Identify systemic mold risk before construction begins

HVAC & Ventilation Evaluation

• Analyze ventilation rates relative to ASHRAE 62.2
• Evaluate pressure balancing, fresh air distribution, and filtration
• Identify duct and equipment conditions that may promote microbial growth

Systems Interaction Risk

• Identify unintended consequences of combined material and mechanical decisions
• Evaluate tight envelope + insulation type + ventilation strategy interactions
• Provide defensible, technically grounded risk assessments

Reporting & Communication

• Produce clear, structured risk evaluations
• Translate technical analysis into actionable recommendations
• Collaborate with architects, engineers, and field teams

WHO YOU ARE:

You are a systems thinker and understand that buildings are dynamic biological and chemical environments — not just structures.

You likely have 8+ years of experience in one or more of the following:

• Building science or enclosure consulting
• Indoor air quality and environmental health

• Inspect buildings and structures to ensure compliance with laws, codes, and regulations relating to building construction, mechanical systems, plumbing systems, state energy code requirements, local zoning requirements, and job site erosion control.
• Investigate compliance complaints and, if necessary, mediate a resolution.

• Conducts site inspections of new and old commercial and residential buildings and structures to ensure compliance with approved plans and codes, notes violations. Approved plans will be reviewed, are posted on the construction site, and are reviewed by the inspector to see that they are properly implemented. Physical Demands and Working Environment:

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

• Inventory control and cycle counts
• Managing materials and maintaining records
• Prepare reports on inventory levels, usage and trends
• Quality and safety compliance; involving company policies and procedures
• Interacting with the customer on a daily basis, and ensuring customer satisfaction

Our operation is based in Ripon, WI and supports equipment manufacturing in the area. We manage and operate a warehouse facility providing pick and pack, sequencing, and inventory management support.

Shifts Available:

2nd shift: Monday–Friday with flexible start times between 12:00pm and 4:00pm. A total of 9 hours per shift is required.

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

• Inventory Counting: Perform regular cycle counts of inventory items to verify quantities and locations, typically without disrupting warehouse operations.
• Data Recording and Reporting: Accurately record counts and discrepancies using inventory management systems, spreadsheets, or specialized software. They generate reports on stock levels, discrepancies, and actions taken to resolve issues.
• Discrepancy Resolution: Investigate and resolve inventory discrepancies, which might involve checking records, verifying product location, or addressing potential causes of the variance.
• Maintaining Accuracy: Ensure that all inventory data is recorded accurately and that inventory procedures are consistently followed to prevent errors in stock levels.
• Inventory Audits: Assist with periodic full-scale physical inventories and participate in stock reconciliations when required.

THE CONTEXT

PEMBs are a highly technical product that requires a level of engineering effort to generate an accurate proposal to secure project awards in a highly competitive market. In the past, we have relied on our production engineering team to support our sales efforts. With our recent, and expected future, growth, we are now looking to bring this engineering expertise directly into the sales team.

 We are looking for an experienced metal building engineer that enjoys solving difficult design problems (we don’t build boxes, check out our project gallery on our website) using the best tools available in the industry, all in a collaborative, challenging, and team-based sales process. This role reports directly to the CEO of the company, who is also the Sales Leader, and will be a key partner in enabling the continued growth and success of our business. THE ROLE

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Metal Building Engineer to serve as THE technical resource on our sales team. In this role, you will use your knowledge of metal building system design, with tools like Metal Building Software (MBS), RISA 3D, Enercalc and others, to develop accurate estimates, preliminary designs, and cost-effective solutions for pre-engineered metal buildings (PEMB), steel structures, and related systems. You will create preliminary material takeoffs (using our internally-developed automated tools) and Excel summaries as part of a broader estimating effort (Hint: this is a team role and is very collaborative). Additionally, you will support our outside sales and business development activities with the generation of building concepts, schematic designs, and general technical guidance. Success in this role is defined as owning and delivering the technical aspects of our overall sales process.

(NOTE: This is a true engineering role, not a sales role. This role will not have to carry a sales quota.)

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Prepare accurate and competitive metal building preliminary designs, and material takeoffs using industry-standard software (e.g., Metal Building Software (MBS), Tekla Structures, RISA 3D, Enercalc, CFS, Bluebeam Revu, and Excel)
• Perform preliminary structural design and layout of pre-engineered metal building systems, including complex framing, hybrid structures, and conventional steel buildings
• Ensure all estimates and designs comply with current building codes, local regulations, wind/seismic loads, and company engineering standards
• Collaborate closely with MBI outside sales executives, customers, architects, engineers, and contractors to understand project requirements, provide technical recommendations, and offer value-engineering suggestions to optimize cost, performance, and constructability
• Serve as the technical subject matter expert during customer meetings, presentations, and site visits; explain product features, structural capabilities, material options, and system benefits clearly and persuasively
• Support the full sales cycle: respond to RFQs/RFPs, conduct technical discovery, deliver product demonstrations, prepare proposals, and assist in negotiations to close deals
• Review and interpret architectural/engineering drawings, specifications, and bid documents to develop tailored solutions
• Provide post-sale technical support to facilitate handing off the project to our operations teams for execution
• Stay current on industry trends, new products, building codes, and competitive offerings; contribute competitive intelligence to the team
• Collaborate with MBI’s Director of Engineering on internal best practices to improve the design, performance and efficiency of our tools and processes related to design and engineering tasks

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, with experience in the Structural discipline
• Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification; SE is NOT required for this position
• 7+ years of engineering experience with 3+ years in metal building design
• Proficiency in metal building design software (MBS) required
• Familiarity with 3D tools such as Revit, Tekla, or SketchUp required
• Solid understanding of structural steel design principles, building codes (IBC, ASCE 7, AISC), load calculations, and metal building components/systems
