This is a very "hands-on" type role that involves spending the majority of time within a lab environment.
Essential Job Functions: Identify, engineer, implement, and verify new designs and configuration of system integration Benches, test racks, cables and harnesses, etc.

Maintain configuration management of the lab, including by updating drawings as required to reflect the lab configuration.
Perform mechanical assembly as required.
Coordinate with government personnel to plan, coordinate and execute system bench activities.
Maintain current system bench configurations and assets.
Develop a deep, working familiarity with a variety of C5ISR and combat vehicle subsystems.

The Role
As an Electrical Engineer, you will be responsible for providing engineering inputs integral to both small and large-scale hydro and dam projects. About You
To fill the role, weβre looking for an applicant to bring forward a good mix of qualifications and previous experiences. Some highlights should include:

Our interns come from a variety of backgrounds and go on to do great things. While many specialize in international affairs, they represent a variety of academic fields including economics, market analytics, policy, and geography. Alumni of the TeleGeography internship go on to pursue careers in business, consulting, law, diplomacy, and internet infrastructure research. Prior experience in telecommunications is NOT required. Please also note that interns do NOT typically practice coding skills or statistical modeling.

Further details: This position is full time. We hope to hire a team of five interns who will each be compensated at $18.40/hour. The internship will last from May 26th - August 14th. Our office is hybrid, with employees typically coming into our D.C. location on Thomas Circle twice per week. Preference will be given to candidates who are able to work in our D.C. office, but we will consider exceptional candidates who are fully remote.

The Senior CAD Designer will be responsible for developing intelligent 3D plant models and producing detailed engineering drawings for water and wastewater treatment facilities, including both process systems and yard piping layouts. The role requires deep proficiency in AutoCAD Plant 3D, strong understanding of plant Layout, piping systems, instrumentation, and plant design standards, and proven experience preparing pipeline profile drawings and 2D construction deliverables derived from 3D models. The successful candidate will demonstrate advanced technical competence in piping and facility design, precise drafting skills, and a disciplined approach to applying standard details and design templates to achieve clarity and constructability in all deliverables. This position will support both corporate and manufacturing engineering functions and play a critical role in maintaining the consistency and quality of design output across projects.
About the Role
Key Responsibilities:
Design Development and 3D Modeling
- Develop and maintain intelligent 3D plant models using AutoCAD Plant 3D for water and wastewater treatment facilities.
- Generate and annotate 2D fabrication, construction, and layout drawings directly from 3D models, including general arrangements, sections, and isometrics.
- Prepare and maintain accurate Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) reflecting process and control intent.
- Design comprehensive facility and yard piping layouts, ensuring proper routing, connectivity, and maintainability of buried and above-ground systems.
- Produce detailed pipeline profile drawings, including pipe slopes, elevations, fittings, and utility crossings.
- Apply and reference corporate standard details to supplement design layouts, ensuring constructability and consistency across projects.
Piping and Material Coordination
- Design and model piping systems utilizing a variety of materials, including PVC, HDPE, Zeron 100 (Super Duplex), 316 Stainless Steel, Ductile Iron, and CLDI.
- Apply correct ANSI flange ratings, valve types, pressure classes, and fitting standards in all design outputs.
- Ensure compliance with ASME, AWWA, and relevant piping codes and design standards.
- Work closely with mechanical and process engineers to validate piping layouts, hydraulic suitability, and installation feasibility.
Instrumentation and Interdisciplinary Integration
- Integrate instrumentation componentsβsuch as flow meters, level sensors, analyzers, and control valvesβinto 3D models and associated drawings.
- Collaborate with Electrical and Instrumentation Engineers to coordinate control devices, cable routes, and panel interfaces.
- Generate accurate instrument location plans, annotations, and tag lists consistent with P&IDs and project standards.
Drawing Quality, Coordination, and Standards
- Produce high-quality, clearly annotated drawings suitable for fabrication, construction, and field installation.
- Maintain and control drawing revisions, transmittals, and registers per corporate document management procedures.
- Conduct self-checks and participate in design and model reviews for constructability, functionality, and compliance with standards.
- Collaborate with Process, Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil teams to ensure multidisciplinary model integrity.
- Support fabrication shops and field installation teams by providing drawing clarifications, asbuilt updates, and redline modifications.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of CAD standards, drawing templates, and standard detail libraries.
Qualifications
- Minimum 8+ years of experience in 3D CAD design for water and wastewater treatment plants or similar industrial facilities.
- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Plant 3D, including equipment modeling, piping design, and orthographic/isometric generation.
- Demonstrated experience producing yard piping layouts and pipeline profile drawings.
- Strong understanding of piping systems, materials, valves, and instrumentation integration.
- Ability to interpret and prepare P&IDs, general arrangements, and fabrication-level deliverables.
- Proficiency in applying standard detail drawings to improve layout clarity and support field constructability.
- Excellent attention to detail with strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Proven ability to coordinate across disciplines and maintain drawing accuracy under tight schedules.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills in a multi-discipline engineering environment.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with skid-mounted modular systems or prefabricated water treatment packages.
- Familiarity with Navisworks, Revit, or Inventor for 3D coordination and model visualization.

- Must read and follow SOP's, Assembly Drawings and Work Instructions.
- Must conduct in-process inspection and may be asked to do a Final Inspection of the kits assembled.
