Description

The CNC Milling Machine Operator builds the operator's skills and knowledge to efficiently perform and maintain the manufacturing processes vertical and horizontal multi-axis milling machines to produce precision aerospace components.



Responsibilities:




  • Operate vertical and horizontal multi-axis milling machinery as required with supervision.
  • Use manual inspection equipment as required, e.g. height stands, micrometers, indicators, dial bores, verniers
  • Work with aerospace materials such as aluminum, stainless steel, magnesium, titanium, and nickel alloys.
  • Read/interpret operation sheets and work instructions.
  • Adhere to established policies and company procedures and standard work.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives utilizing lean manufacturing tools and techniques.
  • Document and communicate manufacturing performance issues to maintain continuity between shifts and decrease machine downtime.
  • Maintain work areas and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Follow all safety policies, rules and regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned by Leads, Supervisors and/or Managers.

  • Ability to stand or sit for extended period of time on a concrete manufacturing floor.

Job Summary
Provides technical and operational assistance to assigned machining areas by reviewing, preparing, and overseeing necessary documents, tools, and programs. Coordinates efforts with Production Supervisor.
Essential Functions:
  • Ensure the timely setup and operation of gear grind machines by:
  • Reading work orders and specification sheets before starting the job.
  • Properly powering up and down the machine.
  • Loading and unloading parts.
  • Ensuring proper tooling for each machine.
  • Preparing required tooling for the upcoming work orders.
  • Troubleshooting setup or production run problems.
  • Tracking tool locations and recommending improvements based on experience.
  • Standardize tooling on all similar machines
  • Checking parts on Gleason Gear Checker without having to wait for quality.
  • Report grinding wheel inventory weekly to insure stock to Production Supervisor and Gear Engineer.
  • Ensures all parts are to the required specifications by:
  • Maintaining and continuously improving the quality of parts produced.
  • Reading blueprints, sketches, Quality docs, to ensure parts are produced to acceptable limits.
  • Verifying conformance of finished work piece specifications.
  • Following and maintaining ISO and Schafer procedures.
  • Ensure the operational effectiveness of all assigned equipment by:
  • Conducting all assigned and necessary preventative maintenance procedures daily.
  • Starting and observing machine operations to detect malfunctions or out of tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls as required.
  • Working with maintenance on machines (and equipment) and testing operations of unit to ensure functionality and performance.
  • Conferring with engineers, production personnel, programmers or others to resolve machining problems.

4. Responsible for supporting the Schafer Business Process by:
  • Maintaining and continuously improving productivity of assigned machines.
  • Continuously looking at tool life and new tooling to cut costs on tools.
  • Reducing downtime of machines setups
  • Maintaining the 6S program in assigned area.
  • Supporting all Schafer policies and procedures.
  • Reporting to the Supervisor when assignments cannot be completed or cannot hit the book rate.

Job Duties

  • Monitor and/or develop speed, feed, depth or angle of cut during machining operations.
  • Must observe machine operation to predict or detect malfunctions or out of tolerance machining conditions and adjust machine controls /control media as required.
  • Verify that all machined details meet print and router specifications, using precision measuring instruments and recording data results. Responsible to ensure first piece inspection is completed for multiple piece runs.
  • Monitor and maintain proper cleanliness of machine and work area on a daily basis.

Requirements

  • A minimum of two years of trade school, vocational education or apprenticeship
  • A minimum of three to five years of CNC machining experience
  • General machining knowledge, shop math, precision measuring instruments, blueprint reading and GD&T
  • Part and tool probing
  • Experience with high speed machining preferred (16 - 27k RPM)
  • Some openings may require specialized experience with particular machining processes or equipment
  • Experience with Siemens 840D Control software a plus
