Summary
Under direct supervision of the Scientific Programs Manager (SPM), the Biologist supports surveillance and control efforts for mosquitoes, ticks, and other medically significant arthropods and animal reservoirs. This position conducts laboratory and field work that advances the District’s mission to protect public health and comfort by reducing disease-carrying vector populations. The Biologist works under supervision and follows established guidelines for vector control operations and laboratory procedures.
Scope of Position
The Biologist performs laboratory and field activities in support of vector surveillance, control evaluation, and research programs, including but not limited to, mosquito, tick, and other vector monitoring, molecular testing, insectary operations, and support of public health investigations.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Includes, but is not limited to:
Field/Efficacy
- Set, maintain, and retrieve mosquito traps across diverse habitats
- Retrieve, Collect and process dead wild birds for arbovirus surveillance
- Design and conduct field trials evaluating control products and equipment
- Assist in conducting studies and evaluations of the impact, efficacy and resistance to control products used for adult and larval mosquito control, in both laboratory and field settings
- Collect, record and interpret field study results as needed or as assigned
- Support tick surveillance projects, including project design, data collection, and analysis
- Assist in research activities conducted by District staff and collaborators in laboratory and field settings
Laboratory/Molecular Assays
- Sort and Identify insects, adult and larval mosquitoes, and other vectors to species
- Prepare samples for pathogen testing including pooling and data entry
- Perform RNA/DNA extractions and qPCR assays and prepare reports
- Maintain quality control and data accuracy for molecular assays
Insectary/Mosquitofish
- Maintain mosquito colonies for research, control evaluation, and education
- Record colony hatch cycles and schedule adult emergence for experimental and educational needs
- Assist with maintaining mosquito fish populations and assist with distribution
Administrative
- Ensure accurate data entry into databases and spreadsheets
- Prepare annual reports of work completed in the laboratory
- Provide guidance to seasonal laboratory staff
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness and efficiency
Work Hours
- 40- (forty) hour workweek, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
- Hours may vary according to daily work schedule.
- Overtime is rare but it can occur.
Working Conditions
- Must be ready to work in all types of weather and around foul water sources (wastewater, stagnant ponds, etc.)
- Processing animal tissues and bodily fluids within the field setting will be necessary; therefore, safety precautions must be followed.
Certification
- Must obtain the Vector Control Technician certifications issued by the California Department of Public Health as stipulated in the Memorandum of Understanding between the District and District employees.
- Ongoing attendance at continuing education classes to maintain certification.
Probationary Period
A one-year probation is required.

- Knowledge of zoonotic diseases, epidemiology, scientific methods and field research experience is helpful.
- An interest in fish biology, environmental ecology, wetland issues and public health is encouraged.

Education

JOB SUMMARY:
The Quality Inspector inspects and tests materials and equipment to ensure compliance with specified drawings and procedures.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Verify and inspect materials to match PO and MRP requirements in accordance with specification drawings, military standards, commercial standards, sampling plans and internal procedures as required.
- Perform screening of materials as specified on incoming inspection travelers and/or shop travelers.
- Perform first piece inspection actions and completion of AS 9102 forms required under AS9100 where applicable.
- Inspect devices under high-powered microscopes for verification of compliance or defect identification and initiate and submit deficiency forms on any non-compliant materials as outlined by company MRB procedures.
- Perform functional electrical measurements using LCR meters, multimeters and other test equipment.
- Program, set-up and operate the coordinate measuring machine (CMM) and perform basic maintenance and calibration on the CMM where necessary.
- Inspect detailed machined parts and assemblies per print requirements if in a machine shop setting.
- Conduct first article, first piece, in process and final inspection.
- Ensure compliance using mechanical measuring devices including, but not limited to: calipers, dial gauges and optical comparators and facilitate testing to ensure compliance.
- Maintain and organize quality documentation.
- Maintain critical task training and certification records.
- Perform quality and process improvement audits and assist manufacturing inspectors with internal and external inspections as directed.
- Perform other inspection, testing or quality related tasks as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:

In this role, daily responsibilities will center on supporting gDNA isolation from clinical samples across multiple therapeutic areas. The Scientist (I) will execute manual and automated workflows for high-quality nucleic acid extraction, perform rigorous quality control assessments on isolated nucleic materials, maintain detailed and accurate documentation in LIMS, and interpret and report QC data. In addition, effective cross-functional communication with researchers is essential to ensure the integrity and utility of isolated gDNA for downstream analyses. Scope:
The Technician, Research and Development provides support for LWE, Sweetener, Coffee, Tea and Concentrate projects; and Shelf Life program; compounds formulas accurately, take physical analytical measurements and prepares and executes daily sensory panels and/or shelf life evaluations in accordance with written or oral instructions; maintains controls for the plant and R&D group, assists with data management, analysis and reporting; maintains inventory of samples for sensory and shelf life studies and may support other product development initiatives as requested. The duties in this position are expected to evolve over time as a result of the company’s growth and expansion into new technologies.
Essential Duties and Key Responsibilities:
• Follows detailed instructions and works independently with light supervision.

We are seeking a Biological Sample Management Associate to join our Translational Medicine team. This role focuses on biospecimen sample management across multiple clinical trials and programs, ensuring accurate tracking, processing, and delivery of biological samples for pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, safety, and exploratory analyses. The individual will report to Associate Director of Project Management in Translational Medicine and collaborate closely with Clinical Operations, Biometrics, and Data Management teams.
Key Responsibilities
