RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is accountable for assisting in the management, coordination, development and production of efficient, economical, and reliable timetables and work programs for NYC Transit Buses.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of full-time progressively responsible relevant experience, one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory or managerial capacity,

or a satisfactory equivalent of education and experience.

DESIRED SKILLS

Familiarity with automated scheduling data processing systems

Experience in bus schedule making process with the knowledge of Hastus

Familiarity with the routes and operations of the NYC Transit System Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communications skills

This position performs intermediate semiskilled work in the transportation of pupils to and from school and special events. Work is performed under regular supervision.

Essential Job Functions

• Drives a school bus; picks up and delivers students to/from school.
• Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
• Maintains safety equipment and reports unsafe bus conditions.
• Adheres to preventive maintenance schedule.
• Completes required forms and reports in an accurate and timely manner.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or its equivalent.
• At least one year of related experience.
• Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

• The work environment is both inside and outside; the worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions.
• Extensive travel is required, exposing the employee to the hazards associated with travel by vehicle.
• This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
• Work requires climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities.

Position Description

Schedule: Year-round, Monday-Friday with both an AM route and PM extended day drop off; field trips as necessary.

Reporting to the Transportation Supervisor, our bus drivers are non-exempt, full-time employees, typically working from August through May with the potential to extend through the summer months based on summer school needs. AM route times and a late afternoon/early evening, extended day drop off. The bus driver operates a bus and transports passengers safely and efficiently to their destination.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Safely operate the bus, ensuring the safety of passengers, pedestrians, and other road users; includes following traffic laws, maintaining control of the vehicle, and being aware of potential hazards on the road
• Pick up passengers at designated stops or locations and transport them to their destinations; ensure that passengers board and exit the bus safely and provide assistance to passengers with disabilities or special needs
• Adhere to predetermined schedules, making sure to arrive and depart from stops on time; adjust driving speed or take alternative routes to maintain the schedule in case of traffic congestion or road closures
• Responsible for maintaining cleanliness and orderliness inside the bus; ensure that the bus is clean and free from hazards before starting each shift; inspect the bus for mechanical issues and report any maintenance or repair needs
• Comply with all applicable regulations and procedures related to driving a commercial vehicle; includes obtaining the necessary licenses and certifications, adhering to traffic laws, and following school policies
• Maintain records related to driving activities, such as mileage, fuel consumption, and passenger counts; keep track of incidents, accidents, or any other notable occurrences
• In case of emergencies, such as accidents or breakdowns, bus drivers are responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of passengers; may involve evacuating passengers, contacting emergency services, or providing first aid when necessary
• Stay updated on the routes, includes any changes or detours, and new traffic regulations

Essential Qualifications

• At least 2 years of proven work experience as a school bus driver, preferably with middle school age students
• Clean driving record with no at-fault accidents or traffic citations within the last 5 years
• Ability to drive a 72- passenger bus is required
• Must have a Commercial Driver's License
• Minimum of a high school diploma required
• Respect for all communities and a commitment to the empowerment of underserved populations
• Citizenship, residency or work VISA in the United States required

Qualifications:

• Possess and maintain a valid Alabama bus driver's license (ABL) and commercial driver's license (CDL) with P/S endorsement.
• Maintain a current Alabama School Bus Physical or ALDOT Health Card as required by state law or the Alabama State Department of Education.
• Possess and maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record including the ability to remain insurable under school system insurance requirements.
• Must meet background clearance as specified by Alabama statutes and State Board of Education regulations.
