Staff Attorney β Statewide
The Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) seeks a full-time Staff Attorney to join our growing team and strengthen civil legal services across Maine. This is a statewide position with hybrid flexibility and some in-office requirements in Portland, depending on the candidate's location.
About the Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project
VLP is Maine's leading nonprofit legal services organization dedicated to coordinating pro bono attorneys to provide free civil legal assistance to individuals and families with limited means. Through clinics, direct representation, community-based initiatives, and strategic partnerships, VLP advances access to justice in every region of the state. We are expanding our statewide capacity and developing innovative service models that increase access to underserved communities.
Position Overview
The Staff Attorney will play a central role in VLP's statewide service delivery model by providing direct representation in court and at clinics, supporting pro bono attorney volunteers, and helping shape innovative strategies that expand access to justice. This role will also support new partnerships and clinic models, particularly in regions with limited attorney availability.
The successful candidate will bring strong litigation skills, experience in family law and other civil legal practice areas, a deep commitment to access to justice and public interest law, and the ability to engage and inspire volunteer attorneys. The capacity to build partnerships, support program development, and work collaboratively across teams is essential. This is a full-time, exempt position.
Key Responsibilities
Direct Client Assistance & Representation
β’ Provide limited and full representation to clients in civil matters within VLP's core practice areas.
β’ Conduct legal triage, case assessment, and case placement.
β’ Represent clients in court or administrative proceedings as needed.
Volunteer Attorney Support & Engagement
β’ Review and triage cases for legal sufficiency prior to volunteer assignment.
β’ Mentor, advise, and support volunteer attorneys throughout the lifecycle of cases.
β’ Devise innovative strategies to boost attorney engagement, strengthen volunteer retention, and align attorney interests with pro bono opportunities.
β’ Lead and organize CLE trainings, workshops, and volunteer development initiatives.
Program & Clinic Support
β’ Work closely with VLP Justice Coordinators to plan, staff, and support clinics statewide.
β’ Assist in developing and refining clinic models, including remote and itinerant offerings.
β’ Contribute legal expertise to emerging initiatives.
Partnership Development
β’ Forge and maintain partnerships with community service providers, courts, community groups, and statewide nonprofits.
β’ Support collaborative projects that expand the reach and impact of pro bono services.
Statewide Access & Community Engagement
β’ Travel as needed across Maine to support clinics, partnerships, and attorney engagement efforts.
β’ Assist with outreach efforts aimed at improving access to rural and underserved counties.
Internal Collaboration
β’ Work closely with the Executive Director and the leadership team to shape legal strategy, strengthen program design, and advance statewide access to justice initiatives.

Requirements:
β’ Admitted to practice law in Maine or eligible for admission and able to practice under Maine Rules of Civil Procedure Rule 11(c) while pursuing full licensure.

OVERVIEW
This position represents low-income individuals and other vulnerable populations, including older adults and caregivers, in a broad range of elder law matters. The role supports older adults and caregivers in addressing civil legal barriers that affect their ability to age in place, including elder abuse, financial exploitation, consumer scams, housing and residential placement, age discrimination, advance health care planning, long-term care and estate planning, guardianship, income instability, and family law matters. In addition, the position engages in community legal education, senior outreach, the provision of general legal information, and the development of collaborative partnerships with community-based organizations to better serve the aging population.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Regular client interaction includes completing intakes, conducting interviews, and providing legal assistance such as brief advice, limited services, and full representation.Β
- Research and interpret laws, rulings, and regulations applicable to cases assigned as well as prepare and review legal writings for the court or administrative agencies.Β
- Representing and advising clients in a variety of civil law matters affecting clientsβ independence, including, but not limited to: elder abuse, financial exploitation, public benefits, long-term care benefits, landlord/tenant issues, foreclosure prevention, homestead issues, debt collection, consumer scams, guardianship, age discrimination, estate planning, custody by extended family members, and dissolution of marriage.Β

The Junior Staff Attorney will handle substantive legal work, including motions practice, case development, and trial preparation, while working under the supervision of the Chief Legal Officer on litigation strategy and client representation. - Guides and mentors pharmacy technicians and students to help build confidence in skills, knowledge and abilities. In the absence of Senior Staff Pharmacists or other higher level, serves as a coordinator for the shift overseeing and leading activities of technicians and other support staff.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Processes all orders/requests accurately and efficiently, verifying appropriateness of all drugs in reference to the patientβs diagnosis, allergies, height and weight.
- Monitors workload fluctuations and work output of pharmacy technician(s), adjusting assignments as appropriate to ensure accurate and timely delivery of medications to patient care areas.
- Conducts proactive drug therapy reviews and monitoring, providing drug information, patient counseling, and management of pharmacist-based dosing protocols, collaborating with other health care staff for problem resolution for the achievement of patient-specific goals.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Collaborates with other health care professionals to manage patientβs drug therapy for effectiveness, side effects, adverse drug reactions, toxicities, drug interactions, and incompatibilities following guidelines for formulary management and clinical intervention tools in the achievement of patient specific goals. Documents patient care activities and patient outcomes as impacted by pharmaceutical care and clinical interventions.
- Participates in department quality management activities, i.e. medication use evaluations, adverse drug reactions and medication error reporting, clinical interventions, medication center reviews, and inventory management documentation and reporting.

- Manages inventory to minimize waste and expired drugs in the work area as well as uses oneβs resources effectively and efficiently.
- Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks.

At Houston Methodist, the Staff Pharmacist position is responsible for providing day-to-day comprehensive, patient-oriented, pharmacy services in any or all areas of the department which includes processing orders, therapy review, and education to patients and other members of the direct patient care team. This position collaborates with other health care professionals to manage patients' drug therapies for effectiveness and overall safety. The Staff Pharmacist position contributes to the fulfillment of the department's mission by collaborating to provide innovative, personalized, cost-effective pharmaceutical care in a culture dedicated to quality and safety. This position is also responsible for the oversight of pharmacy technicians and students and may serve as a preceptor, ensuring the accurate and timely delivery of pharmaceuticals.
