Independently operate and adjust numerically controlled Tape Laminator machines according to established shop practices and procedures.
Prepare for job setup by reviewing production orders, work orders (W/O), and setup documents, ensuring access to blueprints and drawings.
Verify that the correct materials and tools are issued and free from visible defects before starting work.
Identify the type of machine setup needed based on drawings and work orders, including flat tape laminating machines and automated fiber placement machines.
Check machine setups and parts completed by previous operators to ensure safe working conditions and job progress.
Prepare machines by obtaining materials from storage and performing necessary processes before operation, such as rolling tackifier and laying fiberglass.
Retrieve and download CNC programs to the machine controller from the mainframe server.
Monitor machine operations for unusual vibrations or sounds, checking gauges and displays for warnings.
Move finished parts and tools using appropriate material handling equipment as required.
Handle and dispose of hazardous materials in accordance with safety regulations and using personal protective equipment.

Description

As a member of the Maintenance team this role is responsible for effectively troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues on CNC equipment including aligning equipment and reading schematics. Be familiar with milling and turning equipment. This role is an hourly (non-exempt) classified position.



Pay Range: $45 to $55 per hour



Position Requirements
  • Perform mechanical repairs (and rebuild) on all machines
  • Perform machine leveling and alignment on all machines
  • Pull and replace machine linear guides and ball screws.
  • Able to work with complex NC machine up to & including 5 Axis
  • Electrical & Electronic: Diagnose, locate and correct malfunctions of electrical & electronic system such as machine controls, recorders, servo/axis drives, servo motors, defective transformers, relays, contactors, fuses, sensors, etc.
  • Knowledge of OEM machine controllers (FANUC, Siemens and NIT).
  • Working knowledge of tool Probing function for CNC Mill Machines
  • Support with scheduling PM, reading report, diagrams and drawings
  • Plan, layout, and fabricate replacement parts for major rebuilding of precision machine tools where set up and operation to exacting tolerances is required
  • Plan methods required to maintain, test, repair, or modify various types of industrial electronic controls and systems.
  • Analyze and coordinate resolutions of technical problems or assist when solving problems including contacts outside own department as required.
  • Interface with manufacturers on line tech support when needed

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be able to read schematics and parts drawings, perform routine preventive maintenance on machines and facilities, and be proficient with the use of a multi meter.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Set up and run 5-axis CNC machines to produce complex and prototype components.

  • Complete first articles and all dimensional inspection using CMM/OGP and other devices.
  • Degate, finish, and visually inspect composite parts.

Experience Requirements by Role


  • CNC Lathe Machinist: Minimum 1 year of CNC lathe experience in production (setup, troubleshooting, NC program editing).

  • CNC Mill Machinist: Minimum 3 years of CNC machining center experience (setup, troubleshooting, NC program knowledge).

Scope:
Working in a Corporate Engineering Research and Development Laboratory with the responsibility of machining and fabricating high-quality components and prototypes to maintain initiative and project timelines for new product or process introductions. This includes ensuring that all dimensional standards and requirements are met during the prototype construction stage. Creative input is required frequently, as prototype specifications are often incomplete during early project development
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Set up and operate machine tools including but not limited to the following:
  • Milling Machines & Machining Centers (manual and CNC controlled)
  • Engine & Slant Bed Lathes (manual and CNC controlled)
  • Surface Grinder
  • Drill Presses
  • Tool & Cutter Grinders
  • Cut-off Saw/ Band Saw/ Abrasive Saw
  • Use all applicable hand tools including: Micrometers (inside/outside), calipers, height gages, depth gages, etc.
  • Machine prototype components from 3-D model files supplied from Engineering Design.
  • Using creativity and self-direction in designing, machining, and testing of prototypes and fixtures when standard methods do not apply.
  • Machine components or prototypes to supplied Engineering blueprints within specified tolerance requirements.
  • Provide innovative input, as appropriate, to Engineering staff to help meet overall program goals.
  • Determine all necessary equipment and operating parameters necessary to achieve completion of assignments including; end mills, inserts, drills, reamers, fixturing, cutting speeds, surface finishes, etc.
  • Design and construct fixtures for aiding in the machining process as necessary.
  • Perform bench work with hand tools as necessary.
  • Perform maintenance on machine tools, equipment, and work area to maintain a proper work environment.
  • Ability to work from written or verbal instructions.
  • Participate in the Quality Improvement Program through the use of QWG's, MATS's, CATS, and utilization of QIP problem solving techniques.
  • Perform Technical Lab functions as necessary (hydro testing, inspection, pattern approvals, etc.).
  • Specific policies and procedures have been established by the Engineering Department to provide for the security and accessibility of electronic data and confidential information. It is the responsibility of the employee, in the daily course of doing business, to follow said policies as they relate to document management (see EOG-26). The extent to which departmental research and development information is stored electronically has vastly increased, and will continue to do so. The new Federal rules pertaining to electronic discovery stipulate that substantive email communications constituted \"records\" under the Federal Records Act. It is therefore the responsibility of each departmental employee to understand their role in communicating via e-mails and that all e-mails must be written/responded to in a professional manner
  • Follow ALL safety procedures and guidelines.

Qualifications:

  • High school graduate.
  • Proficient in blueprint reading, assembly drawings, shop math, geometry, and use of precision measuring instruments.
  • Proficient in bench work including: drilling, tapping, filing, assembly, and inspection of components for form, fit, and function.
  • Minimum of eight years of machine shop or related experience.
  • Ability to set up, operate, and maintain all Lab machine tools in a proper and safe operating manner.
  • The ability to operate or adapt to the use of CNC controlled machine tools including programming, set-up, and proper operating parameters required to safely operate this equipment.
