POSITION:
Reporting to the Vice President for Operations, the Assistant Vice President of Engineering and Energy is responsible for visionary and strategic energy services and programs for Columbia University. This position will direct, strategize, and implement energy management and engineering services for the campus buildings and Central Energy Plants totaling 9 million square feet. This includes master planning, conservation efforts, managing renewable energy portfolios, strategic procurement of natural gas and electricity, central plant oversight, State of Good Repair (SOGR) program management, and other engineering and energy-related strategic initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS:
•Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field required. Master’s degree in Engineering, MBA or other advanced degree preferred.
•Ten years of experience in utility infrastructure, university utility and facilities operations preferred; ten years of experience in related field.
•Demonstrated experience managing the operation and maintenance of central utility plants preferred.
•Minimum of seven years of environmental / sustainability experience including implementing environmental or sustainability programs, resource management, environmental initiatives, or equivalent experience.
•Demonstrated experience with energy, water, and waste conservation in buildings.
•Skilled in budget preparation, financial management, and analysis.

Design Engineer III – Commercial & Industrial Renewable Energy
We're recruiting for a Design Engineer III role with a leading electrical design and construction firm specializing in commercial and industrial renewable energy projects.
About the Role
This is a technical leadership position where you'll independently execute complex C&I renewable energy designs—solar PV, BESS, hybrid/off-grid systems, and power distribution. You'll serve as the project-level technical lead, coordinating with project management, estimating, procurement, construction, and field teams.
Your responsibilities include:
- Developing construction-ready design packages for solar, BESS, and hybrid systems
- Performing advanced engineering calculations (voltage drop, fault current, conductor sizing, load flow)
- Creating single-line diagrams, panel schedules, equipment layouts, and cable schedules
- Leading technical efforts and mentoring junior engineers
- Conducting site audits and coordinating with utilities and AHJs

The On-Call Building Inspector I position is responsible for inspecting construction of new industrial, commercial, multifamily, and single-family buildings, and remodel work to existing structures, to ensure compliance with approved plans, laws, codes, and regulations, thereby ensuring minimum standards for fire and life/safety codes, structural integrity, and public welfare.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Inspect buildings and structures to ensure compliance with laws, codes, and regulations relating to building construction, mechanical systems, plumbing systems, state energy code requirements, local zoning requirements, and job site erosion control.
- Investigate compliance complaints and, if necessary, mediate a resolution.

- Monitors construction to see that it is completed before occupancy of the building, the permit expires, or sees that the permit is renewed in a timely fashion.
- Maintains adequate records to assure proper documentation of inspections.
- Inspects nonstructural problems with building sites, such as surface water problems and inadequate access, and assures that they are corrected or referred to the appropriate City department.
- Position requires daily use of computer. Incumbent must have, or be able to learn, basic keyboard and computer skills.
- Performs daily inspections of vehicles to include checking tires and lights and determining if service is necessary.

- Must have a valid Washington State Driver's license and ability to remain insurable under the City's insurance to operate motor vehicles.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Building Operations & System Management
- Operate, monitor, and maintain building systems including HVAC, electrical distribution, lighting, plumbing, boilers, chillers, pumps, and Building Automation Systems (BAS).
- Perform routine inspections of equipment, mechanical rooms, and building infrastructure to identify issues and prevent system failures.
- Adjust system settings to optimize performance, energy use, and occupant comfort.
Maintenance & Repair
- Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical and electrical systems.
- Troubleshoot issues with HVAC units, motors, control systems, VFDs, generators, and life safety systems.
- Perform minor carpentry, painting, plumbing, and general building repairs as needed.
- Respond to work orders in a timely, professional manner with proper documentation.
Building Automation & Controls
- Monitor and adjust BAS/BMS system to maintain optimal building performance.
- Identify operational inefficiencies and partner with management to implement improvements.
- Assist with programming, sequencing, alarms, and device testing.
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure all building operations follow OSHA, NFPA, EPA, and local mechanical/electrical codes.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance, inspections, and repairs.
- Support annual inspections for fire systems, elevators, boilers, and other regulated equipment.
- Participate in safety training and emergency response procedures.
Vendor & Project Support
- Coordinate work with external contractors, technicians, and service providers as needed.
