Responsibilities and Duties
- Provide comprehensive care for MICU cases including Sepsis/Septic Shock, ARDS/Acute Respiratory Failure, COVID/Viral Pneumonia, Multi-organ Failure, and DKA/Metabolic Emergencies.
- Manage Surgical ICU cases such as Post-operative General Surgery and Massive Transfusion Protocol.
- Perform Endotracheal Intubation, Central Line Placement, and Arterial Line Placement.
- Conduct Pulmonary Artery Catheter (Swan-Ganz) Placement/Management and Chest Tube Insertion.
- Utilize Bedside Ultrasound (Cardiac, Lung, FAST), Paracentesis, and Thoracentesis.
- Execute Lumbar Puncture for Neuro ICU patients.
- Manage Temporary Pacing Wire Insertion/Management for Cardiothoracic/Cardiac ICU.
- No supervision of advanced practice providers is required.

Summary
GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Open Heart Surgical Technologist functions as a member of the multidisciplinary team providing a safe environment for all age groups of surgical patients; assists the perioperative nurse with patient care; prepares and maintains supplies in the Operating Room (OR); assures that procedure preparations are based on individual patient needs including age specific requirements; and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.
2. *Functions in the scrub role by preparing, organizing and anticipating needed instruments, supplies, and equipment for safe patient care and operative procedure.
3. *Will not first assist with any procedure; will not do any incision closures.

5. *May apply skin sealant and steristrips as part of the dressing after skin has been closed.
6. *Assists the surgeon in performing coronary bypasses and valve procedures.
7. Demonstrates current knowledge of all types of OR procedures.
8. *Defines and practices aseptic technique and infection control principles as they apply to the OR.

Northwest HealthCare, six miles west of Christian, offers 24- hour emergency care, the Sleep Disorders Center and a variety of outpatient diagnostic and imaging services.
The 8th floor is a 44 bed Renal/Telemetry unit with 24 sem8i-private rooms and 1 private room with an adjacent dialysis suite where dialysis treatments are performed under a contractual agreement.
The dialysis suite can accommodate 6 patients at any given time.
There are 2 negative air-flow rooms on the unit.
Any semi-private room can be made private for isolation purposes or to accommodate patient request.
Patients admitted to the 8th floor are acutely ill with medical problems whose primary reason for admission include but are not limited to Renal Failure, CHF, Pneumonia, COPD, Sepsis, Dehydration, Diabetes Mellitus, MI, Angioplasty, S/P Cardiac Catheterization, Cardiac Arrhythmias, Direct Admits along with Post-op surgical patients.
Preferred Qualifications Role Purpose Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care.
Responsibilities Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment.
Educates patients and their families on how to manage their illness or injury, including post treatment home care needs and medication administration.
Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance.
Participates in professional development.
Develops, implements, and documents individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with other members of the interprofessional team and patient, family or caregiver in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care.
Proactively plans and ensures communication of the plan of care across the continuum of care.
Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care.
Assess patient preferences and barriers to involvement in care, including their values, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and population-specific needs.
