Colwell, in the design, implementation and conduct of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) (1983-93) and its follow-up study, Epidemiology of Diabetes Intervention and Complications (EDIC) (1994 to present). These landmark studies proved the utility of intensive management of diabetes in preventing micro- and macro-vascular complications. They led to a 10-year NIH Program Project award to the Division to seek biochemical ‘Markers and Mechanisms for Macrovascular Disease in Diabetes’ (1997-2007) (PI, Garvey, Co-PI, Lyons). In its totality, this body of work (DCCT, EDIC, Program Grant) provides us with a continuing opportunity to study the evolution of complications of diabetes over a 35-year timeframe.
