Assistant/Associate Professor Positions in Biology and Bioengineering
The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions in the life sciences and biotechnology. Appointment will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in either the Department of Biology or of Bioengineering beginning in September 2026.
The Biology Department in the College of Arts and Sciences is seeking candidates with a teaching and research focus in biotechnology, genetic engineering, synthetic biology, or molecular biology, whose research crosses boundaries of traditional life science disciplines and addresses questions of broad significance. Research focusing on questions in the marine environment, using marine model species, or addressing fundamental biological questions with potential relevance to life sciences is of particular interest. The Bioengineering Department in the College of Engineering seeks applications across the full breadth of biomedical engineering. It is particularly interested in candidates with a teaching and research focus in the broad areas of biomedical devices, synthetic biology, drug delivery, and cell and tissue engineering. Candidates that can collaborate across these areas and across traditional departments are encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate's research program will complement existing research strengths in their home Department and have the potential to form new cross-disciplinary research collaborations, including between the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Engineering. The Biology Department has research strengths in marine biology, organismal and evolutionary biology, and genomics. The Bioengineering Department has existing expertise in biomaterials, chemistry, synthetic biology, biomechanics, nanoscale material synthesis, and cell and tissue engineering, with a strong program in robotics associated with the College of Engineering. Both Departments are inclusive communities and benefit from well-established connections with the School for Marine Science and Technology, the Center for Scientific Computing and Data Science Research (), and other colleges and universities in the region.

The successful candidate will be committed to excellence in teaching and advising and to mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students in research. Minimum Qualifications

General Duties
In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, creating and grading quizzes and/or exams, managing and assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and using a learning management system (e.g., bCourses at UC Berkeley, Blackboard, Canvas, etc.). For courses with discussion or lab sections, duties may include supervision, training and coordination of Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs).
For General Biology (BIO 1B) Lab Courses: The laboratory class currently covers three major sections: Evolution, Ecology, and Plant Biology/Organismal Diversity. Exercises include investigations into population genetics, phylogenetic relationships, macroevolution, bioindicators, and structure and function of organisms. BIO 1B is a gateway course to the major field of Integrative Biology that consists of three one-hour lectures and one four-hour combined discussion and lab each week. Lecturers will be required to lead one discussion and lab per week, create assignments, grade assignments, attend a Friday instructional meeting, be familiar with lecture, proctor exams, hold office hours and complete other instructional duties as assigned. Senior lecturers mentor new hires and GSIs.

The compensation model varies depending upon the course delivery format. For a synchronous Classroom (In-Person) or Live Online course, a reasonable estimate for this position is $2,750 - $6,800 total per course. For an asynchronous Start Anytime Online course, this position is paid $180 - $200 per final student course grade submitted each month; a reasonable estimate ranges from $900 - $20,000 total per course; and monthly payments typically begin within 6 months after the course start date. Overview:
We are seeking a highly motivated, independent PhD scientist with strong laboratory expertise to contribute to advancing the understanding of target biology and the mechanisms of action of novel small molecule inhibitors for cancer treatment. The Advanced BioImaging Center (ABC) at UC Berkeley aspires to be a world leading multidisciplinary imaging center that drives important biological discoveries through critical new advances in all aspects of imaging technology and that drives the dissemination of that technology through a multi-pronged education strategy to scientists around the world. Position description
The He lab is in the Molecular and Cell Biology department at UC-Berkeley, which encompasses a breadth of disciplines spanning all levels of organization and encompassing diverse organisms. The breath of training, combined with the unique location of Berkeley in the center of biomedical research, offer a nurturing environment for the next-generation scientist to launch on a successful career in biomedical research in academia and industry. The Principal Investigator, Dr. Lin He, was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship (the genius award), the Searle Scholar, a HHMI Faculty Scholar, and is currently a Thomas and Stacey Siebel distinguished chair professor at UC-Berkeley, and a biohub investigator with the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI).
The developmental and physiological complexity of a given organism is not governed by the sheer number of protein-coding genes. In mammals, the numerous functional non-coding elements greatly expand gene regulatory modality and diversify functional reservoir. Using human genetics/genomics, mouse genetics/genomics, cell and molecular biology approaches, the He lab at UC-Berkeley has identified a variety of functional non-coding elements, including transposons and non-coding RNAs. Not only do non-coding elements offer important developmental/physiological functions, they also provide us with a unique angle to discover new biological/cellular processes in development and disease. Combining sophisticated genome engineering and innovative live cell imaging, we have pioneered in vivo studies to elucidate the new cellular functions and molecular mechanisms in development and aging. The discoveries of the He lab have been well recognized by publications in prestigious journals, including Nature, Science and Cell. Currently, there are postdoc openings in two projects.
Transposons in mammalian preimplantation development ~40% of mammalian genome originates from transposons, whose abundance greatly exceeds that of protein genes. While historically viewed as degenerated "parasitic" DNAs, transposons yield numerous functional elements for the host genome. These sequences resulted from ancient invasion confer new mechanisms of gene regulation, generate Neogene/ncRNA functions, and provide raw material for genome innovation. Mammalian preimplantation embryos constitute one of the best systems to study transposon-host interactions, as ~20% of their transcriptome results from transposon induction. We aim to characterize the role of specific transposons in preimplantation embryos.
Transposons in aging and disease While specific transposons are integral components of host biology, most mammalian transposons are potentially detrimental to the host genomes, thus inactivated via degenerative mutations and/or transcriptional/post-transcriptional silencing. Interestingly, aberrant transposon induction has been observed in a variety of pathological conditions, including aging, cancer and infection. We aim to investigate the mechanisms underlying transposon dysregulation during reproductive aging and cancer, and to elucidate the effects of transposon-host interactions that accelerate aging and promote cancer.
Postdoc responsibilities:
1) The postdoc will work with the PI to develop a project in one of the two research directions, to comprehensively read literature, to establish appropriate experimental systems, to learn important technologies, and to execute experiments to advance the project and perform data analyses.
2) The postdoc will meet with the PI on a weekly basis to discuss results, to development experimental plans.

The Assistant/Associate/Full Project Scientists will help develop and execute the research program focused around ABC's overarching goal of moving cell biology away from the coverslip and into physiological systems. These positions will work within a dedicated team to develop and refine the microscopy techniques. This position will manage projects and provide regular progress reports to PIs and collaborators.

This instrument aims to achieve a 10-fold increase in data acquisition throughput while maintaining the high-quality optical performance demonstrated in our previous work.
*Use, maintain, and oversee the operations of the two next-generation multimodal optical scopes with adaptive imaging correction (MOSAIC) microscopes at the ABC.
*Actively participate in handling/mounting biological samples on advanced microscopes and collect 4/5D datasets.
*Collaborate with a cross-disciplinary team of AI scientists, data engineers, instrumentation scientists and biologists and generate high resolution microscopy data using novel transparent developing organism reagents necessary to reach the goal of prototyping and training a 4D foundation model.
*Actively participate in national and international collaborations, presentation of research findings at scientific conferences, and publication of results in leading peer-reviewed journals.
*The incumbent will actively participate in and occasionally lead efforts to develop new projects.

Qualifications

*Minimum of four years of postdoctoral research experience

Preferred qualifications
*PhD or equivalent international degree in Physics, Chemical or Biological Engineering, Molecular and Cell Biology, Systems Biology, Biochemistry, or Related Field.
*Experience or expertise in light microscopy, spectroscopy, or laser optics.
*Experience or experience with adaptive optics and lattice light sheet microscopy.
*Experience or experience designing and building custom microscopes.
*Ability to troubleshoot microscopy instruments, prepare samples, design research methodology.
*Proficient with CAD programs for instrument design (e.g. Autodesk Inventor or Solidworks).
*Ability to explain concepts to a variety of audiences; and oversee a laboratory space or unit.
*A strong preference for a record of imaging, characterization and analysis of live cells and biological tissues.
*Experience with data and image processing, evaluating image quality, visualizing and analyzing image data.
*Experience making figures and movies with microscopy data for publishing articles.
*Experience collaborating with labs in a wide variety of areas.
*Experience executing large imaging projects (tens of terabytes to multi petabyte-scale)
*Experience leading technicians
*Ability to review research proposals and ideas, evaluate research capabilities, and make recommendations.
*Ability to effectively communicate, participate in efficient and open collaboration, and engage with a diverse group of researchers.
*The ideal candidate will be innovative and able to synergize various ideas and approaches, while exercising sound judgment to evaluate and take acceptable risks.
