Position Purpose: Reports to the Outreach Supervisor and serves as a key liaison between the NJ FamilyCare program and the community. Delivers presentations to groups and individuals, providing clear and courteous information about program benefits, enrollment, and eligibility. Assists beneficiaries with application completion and eligibility determination.

About the Role 

  • Assists walk-in and telephone customers with completing new and renewal applications, HMO selection forms and answers questions about the program.
  • Conducts presentations to educate consumers about NJFC and the benefits of managed care within an office and call center setting, at Community Based Organizations, community events and home visits with some evening and some weekend events.
  • Respond to telephone inquiries and complaints in a call center environment using standard scripts and procedures. 
  • Enters eligibility information into a web-based computer system and references other NJ-specific databases as appropriate. 
  • Determine eligibility for NJ FamilyCare according to the NJ FamilyCare regulations/guidelines by reviewing documentation and following procedures; prepare correspondence for missing information as appropriate; make outbound calls to obtain, clarify, or validate information
  • Participate in and contribute to the quality improvement process
  • Participate in training sessions conducted in Hamilton and at the regional offices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Experience Requirements: 

  • Associate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Two (2) minimum experience in the healthcare field.
  • Knowledge and operational experience in Medicaid and/or CHIP programs are a plus.
  • General knowledge of public health, managed care, human services systems, and local and statewide political systems preferred.
  • Experience working with people representing diverse backgrounds is preferred.  

Required skills/abilities: 

  • Knowledge of Medicaid and managed care programs.
  • Ability to solve problems through analysis and ongoing feedback.
  • Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines, flexibility under pressure.

In addition to base pay, this position, based on business need, may be eligible for a bonus or incentive. Under direct supervision of a licensed mental health professional, with latitude for independent judgment and decision making, performs professional work of ordinary difficulty in the mental health discipline. The following are typical tasks for Assignment Level I:

Examples of Typical Tasks:

  1. Provides mental health counseling and psycho-education services to clients with less complex cases.
  2. Participates in the interviewing and case history taking process by utilizing appropriate assessment and screening tools.

Under the general direction of the Director of Safety & Environmental Health, or designee, the Occupational Safety & Environmental Health Coordinator is responsible to lead initiatives related to incident response and reporting of workplace violence and staff occupational injuries. Conduct routine safety rounds in all facilities where CHS employees are located while identifying potential environmental safety hazards to the Department of Corrections (DOC) for mitigation. The Occupational Safety & Environmental Health Coordinator will engage with staff to identify safety gaps or environmental health concerns, provide on-going support and follow-up for staff involved in workplace violence incidents and/or who have suffered occupational injuries. This position serves as a central resource for safety education, incident response, and environmental risk mitigation across all CHS sites and services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond on-site to serious incidents of workplace violence, occupational injury, or environmental hazards, to provide support, gather factual information and develop a detailed report of findings.
  • Conduct post-incident well-being checks for employees who were involved in a workplace violence incident or who may have sustained a severe work-related injury.
  • Assist in maintaining workplace violence, occupational injury, and other safety-related databases and logs.
  • Compile workplace violence and staff injury reports for distribution to required entities.
  • Performs regularly scheduled and unannounced walkthroughs of Rikers Island, community warehouses, outposted sites, and court-based facilities for the purpose of engaging staff to identify, document and address their workplace concerns in a timely manner.
  • Conduct in-service education to healthcare personnel on safety procedures, including but not limited to situational awareness, workplace violence prevention, and emergency response actions.
  • Represent CHS as needed in internal or external committees and workgroups where Safety representation or perspective is required.

Since 2016, Correctional Health Services (CHS) has been the direct provider of health care in the New York City jails. Deeply committed to human dignity and patient rights, CHS is part of the NYC Health + Hospitals system and is a key partner in the City’s efforts to reform the criminal-legal system. Our in-jail clinical services include medical, nursing, and mental health care; substance-use treatment; social work; dental and vision care; discharge planning; and reentry support.

Position Overview

Under the general direction of the Director of Safety & Environmental Health, or designee, the Deputy Director of Safety & Environmental Health is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring adherence to CHS policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
