About The Role

We are looking for a reliable and experienced Mechanical & Controls Technician, capable of installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, minor programming, and repair of electrical, mechanical, and automated control systems in an industrial or manufacturing environment. This position combines electrical, mechanical, and controls knowledge, ensuring systems function within design parameters safely and efficiently at our Shaw Bakers’ manufacturing facility in San Leandro.

Core Responsibilities

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

• Controls & Electrical Duties: Troubleshoot and repair electrical and electronic systems, motor controllers, variable frequency drives (VFD), servo systems, and motor starters. Diagnose PLC alarms and repair or replace sensors, actuators, input/output modules and other control devices as required.
• Vendor Coordination: Point of contact with vendors for PLC hardware/software issues or upgrades, and general mechanical and electrical equipment repair.
• Mechanical Duties: Inspect, maintain, and repair mechanical systems, including motors, pumps, compressors, conveyors, production machinery, and related equipment. Perform diagnostic tests, identify faults, and implement repairs or part replacements. Ensure preventive maintenance procedures are followed to minimize downtime.
• Documentation & Compliance: Maintain detailed records of maintenance, diagnostics, calibrations, and system modifications. Prepare technical reports, schematics, and manuals. Ensure all work adheres to safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
• Training and Support: Providing technical expertise and hands on training and development for operators and maintenance techs on an ongoing basis.
• Proactive Engagement: Perform area walkthroughs and inspections of the facility and equipment to identify and resolve issues proactively.
• Comply with Health & Safety Policies: Follows and ensures health and safety policies are always the first task.
• Collaboration: Effectively collaborate with other departments and vendors to develop, plan, and implement projects to improve company efficiency, safety, and overall throughput.

Skills & Experience Required

• 5+ years of Industrial Control Systems Maintenance required, including hands-on experience with motor controls, VFDs, servos, DeviceNet, and PLC troubleshooting.
• 5+ years of Mechanical Maintenance, including troubleshooting, from a manufacturing or industrial environment required.
• Technical Skills: Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical blueprints, wiring diagrams, and pneumatic/hydraulic schematics. Proficient with diagnostic tools. Strong troubleshooting skills for both mechanical and electrical systems.
• Knowledge of automation software and HMIs a plus.
• Experience with Ladder logic programming a plus.
• Experience reporting daily metrics in a CMM.
• Ability to operate in a rapidly changing environment.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Required Skills & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, information systems, Business Administration, Maritime Administration, or related major in a public or accredited private academic institution required

• 5+ years related terminal equipment knowledge required.

• Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or enterprise asset management (EAM) software (Maximo, Infor, SAP, etc.).

• Strong data analysis and reporting skills (Excel, Power BI, SQL. Etc.)

• Experience with SQL, SQL Server, ETL design, and RDBMS. • Fluent in finance, statistics, datasets, and scripting.

Job Description

• Build infrastructure requirement for extraction, transformation, and loading of data. Design and maintain data models used for reporting and analytics.

• Create dashboards and KPIs to show business performance to management.

• Understand business strategy to build timely and scalable insights to enable quick and accurate data driven decisions.

• Analyze various sources of data to determine the best fields for specific KPIs and ensure data accuracy by validating data for new and existing tools.

• Develop preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance plans and schedules for the clients assets (wharves, cranes, roadways, utilities, terminals, fleet, buildings, marine structures, etc.).

• Own the design and development of automated solutions for recurring reporting and indepth analysis.

• Analyze planning data to define manpower, parts and other resources required to meet terminal demands

• Perform a variety of activities in planning, scheduling, and documentation, including reports and presenting findings

• Develop CMMS tool to meet department demands, including maintain accurate and prompt data collection

• Perform analysis of workload, staff allocation and material resources by developing flexible forecasting tools

Develop methods of tracking operational costs for container and general cargo facilities.

• Manage budget preparation and monitoring of department expenses with Maintenance Managers of container and general cargo facilities; analyze and report variances in expense on a monthly and quarterly basis; provide information on developing trends.

• Design dashboards, forms, and reports that capture key performance indicators (KPI’s) and identify key trends to assist in establishing proactive solutions to drive improved performance

• Facilitate continuous improvement activities, kaizen events, visual process mapping, and other exercises for varying work groups

• Review and recommend short- and long-term plans and course of action; ensure planned project needs are properly budgeted and delivered on time

• Assemble detailed spreadsheets, charts, and graphs to illustrate technical reports; analyze data and reports to provide accurate and timely recommendations to management for decision-making purposes

• Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve moderate to complex issues reported by end- users via research, testing and scenario re-creation as it relates to Maximo and Power BI; create and execute, functions to support business operations. Make recommendations for long-term solutions to stabilize the system.

• Work closely with project management teams and other support staff to monitor terminal projects

• Track and report key maintenance metrics (asset downtime, mean time between failures, preventive maintenance compliance, maintenance costs, labor utilization, backlog).

• Participate in Master Plan development for container and general cargo facilities

Preventive & Corrective Maintenance: Perform scheduled maintenance and on-demand repairs on production and facility equipment, minimizing downtime and maximizing output.

Electrical & Mechanical Troubleshooting: Diagnose issues using schematics, meters, and diagrams on systems including AC/DC motors, gearboxes, compressors, drives, and pumps.

System Optimization: Analyze root causes of failure and develop process improvements that extend equipment life and reduce repeat maintenance issues.

Documentation & Safety: Complete maintenance logs, follow lockout/tagout procedures, and ensure all repairs comply with OSHA and company safety standards.

Collaboration & Leadership: Communicate with operators, supervisors, and fellow technicians to ensure smooth shift handoffs and coordinated repairs.

Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required.

• High school diploma or equivalent.

• Journeyman's license in mechanical trade must be obtained within 6 months of start of position.

• Responsible for the maintenance, repair and installation of hospital equipment and furnishings, and for the replacement of defective parts or unsafe or malfunctioning parts.
• Responsible for the welding and soldering of sheet metal and other metal products as required.
• Responsible for correct material orders and amount requested. Utilize the department work order system to record time and material.
• Responsible for snow and ice removal. Maintains safe walking and driving conditions.
• Cleans and maintains work areas in a neat and orderly manner.
• Being available for "call-ins" and "on-call" status during inclement weather and for other emergency situations.

Schedule: 12-hour rotating shifts (2-2, 3-2, 2-3)

* Night Shift: 5:50 PM - 6:20 AM

* Must be available for overtime, weekends, holidays, and emergency coverage as needed

Qualified applicants will contribute the following:

* Operate and maintain ammonia refrigeration systems, boilers, steam, and compressed air systems

* Perform routine preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs

* Conduct daily ammonia system inspections and rounds

* Support equipment modifications and technical troubleshooting

* Participate in Process Safety Management (PSM) and Root Cause Analysis activities

* Perform maintenance during both production and scheduled downtime

* Assist maintenance technicians and support training of new employees

* Participate in Continuous Improvement initiatives

* Ability and willingness to work overtime, any shift, including days, nights, weekends and holidays.

* Plant operation is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Education:

* High school diploma or GED required

* 1-2 years of electrical and/or mechanical maintenance experience or technical trade certification

* Basic computer proficiency

* Preferred experience with:

Ammonia refrigeration systems

HVAC, compressed air, electrical distribution, and steam systems

* RETA CARO or CIRO certification required or obtainable within 12 months

* Ability to use APR respirators and SCBA

Perform routine repairs, preventive maintenance and installation of equipment under close supervision and in a timely manner to minimise disruptions of site operations.
