Key Responsibilities
* Monitor refrigeration system to include compressors, components, condensers, air units, and perform preventive maintenance and repair as scheduled
* Troubleshoots and repairs various pieces of equipment using several diagnostic skills/tools (ladder logic, volt meters, etc.).
* Basic troubleshooting/repair/preventive maintenance of all refrigeration and ice conveying equipment in the plant and freezer areas.
* The ability to start up equipment during pre-shift, such as ice makers and chillers.
* Supports and provides training to other IMTs in the proper running and completion of preventive maintenance tasks.
* Interprets specifications, blueprints, schematics, and work orders in performing duties.
* Suggests changes in processes to increase equipment uptime (reliability) while ensuring it is operating at optimal levels. Is committed to continuous improvement.
* Acts in a manner that is consistent with Butterball's core values. Must be able to work in both teams and on an individual basis in performing this role. Must be self-directed and focused on utilizing time efficiently.

From your PASSION to ours
Reporting to the Maintenance & Engineering Manager, this position's main responsibility is following the ammonia refrigeration operational procedures to safely service and maintain all ammonia refrigeration equipment and components. Assist in maintaining the Process Safety Management (PSM) documentation and ensure compliance with all regulations within the scope of Process Safety Management (PSM) and EPA requirements (RMP).
From your EXPERTISE to ours
Key responsibilities for this position include:
- Be able to follow ammonia refrigeration operational procedures to safely service and maintain all ammonia refrigeration equipment and components. Assist in maintaining the Process Safety Management (PSM) documentation and ensure compliance with all regulations within the scope of Process Safety Management (PSM) and EPA requirements (RMP)
- Be able to pump out, disassemble, repair, and reassemble all types of refrigeration equipment while adhering to all mandated safety procedures Troubleshoot and repair ammonia compressors.
- Be able to be responsible for air compressors, boilers, generators, thermal fluid systems, HVAC systems, air handlers, exhaust fans, and water chilling systems and reporting any ammonia leakages. Also perform daily PMs on the equipment and perform boiler tests and condenser treatment tests.
- Be able to troubleshoot and repair electrical devices such as fuses, motors, motor starters, proximity switches, circuit breakers, receptacles and plugs. Note: PLC experience is a plus.
- Be able to use electrical equipment such as a volt meter and amp meter to determine electrical malfunctions on fuses, motors, motor starters and switches.
- Accountable for the QRMP (Quality Risk Management Process) standards as outlined in the plant's QRMP accountability document, including the implementation, improvement and ongoing maintenance.

Major Responsibilities: • Perform all levels of maintenance services, with the primary focus on all refrigeration unit such as Carrier and/or Thermo King commercial refrigeration equipment designed for commercial trucks and trailers.
• Be able to test lines, components, and connections using electrical, mechanical and pneumatic test equipment • Read complex schematics associated with the refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.

• Provide additional support regarding preventative maintenance and tractor trailer maintenance as required by location management • Inspect and verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications.
• Other projects and tasks as assigned by supervisor Qualifications: • 6 years practical experience with tractor trailer maintenance required • High school diploma or equivalent required • Vocational/Technical or certification preferred • Specialized training and experience in the overhaul of refrigeration components required • ASE Certification preferred • 608/609 certifications preferred • Proficiency in the use of all necessary tools of trade required • Current CDL license with air brake certification preferred • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook required • Ability to work in a non-climate controlled environment is required • The associate will be required to understand and comply with specific instructions, guidelines, rules, regulations, or other information established by Penske management • The associate must be able to perform all work adhering to DOT, OSHA, and all Penske safety and maintenance policies; including but not limited to the correct selection and use of appropriate tools, PPE, machine guarding, and established best safety practice.
• Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job • As this position requires driving Penske and customer vehicles, it is regulated by the DOT and requires a current driver qualification file to be maintained as required by the role.
The driver qualification file includes: an annual motor vehicle records (MVR) check, a successfully completed DOT Physical, and Safety Performance History records request from prior employers in the last 3 years.
Additionally, CDL holders will have a DOT Drug Screening within 30 days of start and subject to a FMCSA Clearinghouse review.

PURPOSE STATEMENT: The job of Lead HVAC & Refrigeration Technician is done for the purposes of providing journey-level skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of air conditioning, heating; installing, managing, and repairing chilled water systems, chillers, boilers; reviewing work requests; assigning and leading the work of other technicians; conducting scheduled maintenance and repair surveys; inspecting completed work; ensuring completion of projects in accordance with trade standards; providing information on the operation of HVAC systems; and supporting other skilled trades in completing work assignments.
This job reports to the Maintenance Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Analyzes blueprints, schematics, and drawings for existing and proposed HVAC systems for the purpose of identifying the location of new and existing systems and determining the efficient installation of additional equipment/systems.
Confers with immediate supervisor and assists with the coordination of day-to-day activities (e.g.
periodic lubrication; filter cleaning; changing belts, repairing system leaks, checking water tower components, trouble/issues phone call response, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the proper and efficient maintenance and repair of District HVAC.
Coordinates with administration and other trades for the purpose of completing projects/work orders efficiently.
Coordinates personnel regarding procedures and/or status of work orders (e.g.
establishing work schedules, reviewing processes to be undertaken, etc.) for the purpose of providing direction and information for decision-making, taking appropriate action, and/or complying with health and safety regulations.
Diagnoses causes of problems and/or failures in heating/air conditioning (e.g.
blowers, filters, the flow of condenser water, water treatment system, variable air volume (VAV) systems, and pumps, etc.) for the purpose of identifying equipment and/or systems repair and replacement needs.
Installs electrical HVAC system components (e.g.
alarms, switches, timers, service disconnects, relay, controllers, variable frequency drive (VFD), etc.) for the purpose of providing enhanced and/or upgraded capabilities.
Estimates materials and/or equipment needed to initiate/complete work projects for the purpose of ensuring timely implementation and completion of projects.
Fabricates equipment parts (e.g drain pans, repiping, reducting, etc.) for the purpose of meeting specialty needs and/or replacing discontinued or unavailable parts.
Implements assigned programs and/or projects (e.g.
inspection schedules, preventive maintenance programs, new District projects, work orders, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring optimal HVAC operation and conformance to established guidelines.
Informs personnel regarding procedures and/or status of work orders for the purpose of providing information for making decisions, taking appropriate action, and/or complying with health and building regulations.
Inspects completed work (e.g.
heating units, building exhaust fans, ventilation units, repair of gas heaters and boilers, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the quality of work standards are met and identifying preventive maintenance requirements.
Installs heating/air conditioning equipment and systems (e.g.
boilers, chilled water systems, etc.) for the purpose of providing enhanced and/or upgraded HVAC capabilities.
Maintains a variety of files and records (e.g.
time sheets, inventory, work orders, labor/material estimates, equipment repair manuals, service records, etc.) for the purpose of providing up-to-date references and audit trail.
Manages operation and performance records (e.g.
periodic lubrication schedules, heating and cooling performance, diagnosis of electrical systems, testing of refrigerant and condensation systems, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring timely review and assessment.
Monitors contract work (e.g.
coordination of contractor work schedules and performance, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring contract terms are fulfilled and work standards are met.
Oversees and coordinates assigned personnel regarding procedures, the status of work orders, and the day-to-day activities and operations (e.g.
establishing work schedules, reviewing processes to be undertaken, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper, and timely manner, maximizing the efficiency of the workforce.
Participates in meetings, workshops, and training (e.g.
new employee training, 3rd party contractor meeting, maintenance department meetings, etc.) for the purpose of conveying, gathering information, offering recommendations required to complete HVAC and training personnel.
Procures equipment and supplies (e.g.
overseeing inventory requirements, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the availability of required items in order to complete jobs efficiently.
Responds to emergency situations during and after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate operational and safety concerns.
Tests and repairs heating and air conditioning systems and components; swimming pool equipment (e.g.
braze or solder tubing; charge systems with refrigerant gas; condensers, valves and coils, piping, boilers, air handlers, motors, etc.) for the purpose of providing solutions for HVAC system operation for a safe and comfortable work/learning environment.
OTHER FUNCTIONS: Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of District’s HVAC and general maintenance.
EXPERIENCE: Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.
EDUCATION: No specific education is required.
EQUIVALENCY: Any combination equivalent to three (3) years of journey-level experience in the air conditioning, heating and refrigeration field, including one (1) year with the responsibility to lead/supervise the work of others.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES: SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.

What Youll Do
Youll service commercial refrigeration and HVAC equipment across Central Kentucky, with a focus on foodservice and retail environments. Daily responsibilities include:
- Installing, maintaining, and repairing walk-in coolers/freezers, reach-ins, prep tables, ice machines, and commercial HVAC systems
- Troubleshooting and diagnosing refrigeration issues including temperature control problems, defrost failures, leaks, compressor issues, and electrical faults
- Replacing major components such as compressors, evaporator/condenser fan motors, TXVs, contactors, relays, and motor starters
- Performing scheduled preventive maintenance on walk-ins, ice machines, and rooftop HVAC units to maximize uptime and efficiency
- Responding quickly to emergency cooling or ice-production outages for restaurants, c-stores, and commercial kitchens
- Working independently in the field while collaborating with team members and office staff as needed
- Communicating clearly and professionally with customers to explain findings and recommended repairs
- Following all safety standards, EPA guidelines, and local mechanical codes
