Our client, a respected plaintiffs-side boutique in Midtown Manhattan, represents unions and the trustees of multiemployer pension and health and welfare funds in litigation and counseling matters. The firm is seeking an associate with at least three years of litigation experience to join its labor and employee benefits practice. This is an opportunity to do substantive, meaningful work—protecting workers’ rights and benefits—while gaining true first-chair experience. In addition to ERISA and labor litigation, associates also assist with compliance matters and represent union members on employment-related cases through a union legal services plan. The role is hybrid (~3 days/week in office). Base annual salary is $110,000 – 120,000 with potential for annual performance bonus.
Responsibilities:
- Draft and respond to pleadings and motions;
- Manage all aspects of discovery (including depositions, written discovery, eDiscovery, and expert work);
- Appear in court and at conferences;
- First-chair arbitrations and, where appropriate, trials;
- Counsel clients and trustees on fund administration and compliance issues;
- Communicate with opposing counsel and the court; and
- Collaborate with paralegals and support staff.
Required Qualifications:
- J.D. with strong academic credentials;
- Active New York Bar membership (or eligibility to waive in);
- At least three years of federal litigation experience, including pleadings, discovery, and motion practice;
- Familiarity with ERISA law and/or NLRB matters preferred, but not required for strong litigators willing to learn;
- Confidence handling court appearances, depositions, and hearings (first-chair experience a plus); and
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
