Position description

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for up to three Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist positions in the Upadhyayula Lab, in the area of Biological Science .



The Advanced BioImaging Center (ABC) at UC Berkeley aspires to be a world leading multidisciplinary imaging center that drives important biological discoveries through critical new advances in all aspects of imaging technology and that drives the dissemination of that technology through a multi-pronged education strategy to scientists around the world. ABC was intentionally designed to maximize scientific productivity and impact by adopting groundbreaking imaging technologies such as the next-generation adaptive optical multifunctional microscope, incorporating the high-level technical expertise of instrumentation scientists , applied mathematicians, and computational scientists, and building worldwide collaborations aimed at tackling the challenges posed by terabyte and petabyte-scale imaging data processing, visualization, and dissemination. You will have access to leading - edge imaging and computing hardware, as well as exposure to the Bay Area's brightest minds from a range of diverse disciplines, including in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Mathematics, and more.



The positions involve close collaboration on a number of new and ongoing empirical projects in the fields of microscopy and data analysis. The incumbent will work on tera-to-petabyte scale research data and will have the opportunity to gain exposure to and training with a broad set of research topics and methodologies. The roles exercise judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.



The duties of the positions include:

* Operate and maintain the next generation multi-functional adaptive optical microscope(s) and other pre-commercial optical microscopes.

* Develop new imaging and data processing tools

* Assist with data acquisition using advance pre-commercial microscopy systems to image biological samples ranging from cells in culture, such as bacteria, mammalian cells, and organoids to intact organisms, such as zebrafish or mice, etc.

* Be involved in the applications of these tools for biological imaging; collaborate with Postdocs and graduate students on specific projects to test, learn and implement for general and specific use cases.

* Be an integral part of the expert team working together with computational scientists and biologists in experimental design to tackle complex biological questions in a quantitative manner.

* Train and assist students and researchers in the use of software applications

* Train and assist users with their imaging or data processing tasks.

* May supervise undergraduate students.

* General organization and management of software documentation.

The role of the Recreation Lead is to provide outstanding customer service and operational support to recreation programs, facilities, and events within Parks and Community Services. Recreation Leads serve as the on-site City representative and may work at City facilities, athletic fields, school gymnasiums, City parks, and/or off-site program locations. Recreation Leads provide operational support including preparing spaces, leading and monitoring activities, and performing clerical work, and training and leading staff. Preferred qualifications

* For all language instruction: Native or near-native fluency in specified language (select specialization). College-level teaching in specified language. Job Summary

The program assistant supports and assists with programs, facilities, services, and events within Parks and Community Services (PCS) and serves as a primary customer service agent.

This assignment is for a seasonal, ongoing, non-benefited on-call program assistant, to support year-round community building events including Lunar New Year, Dia de Los Muertos, Outdoor Summer Movie Series, Celebrate Kirkland July 4th Parade, Harvest Festival, and many other events hosted by PCS, plus the LED screen rental program. This position is anticipated to begin in February and be ongoing with hours varying, usually 15- 40 hours per week depending on need and is not to exceed 1040 hours per year. Most work will be done Monday-Friday at Kirkland City Hall, with occasional weekend or evening shifts primarily for events. The on-call program assistant must be available to work July 4 and the days immediately preceding and following the holiday.

The ideal candidate possesses a strong work ethic, the capacity to prioritize tasks and work on a variety of projects with competing deadlines. Candidates should have the ability to be adaptable to new situations, ideas, and challenges and must be able to take initiative and work proactively. Must be self-motivated and work well as part of a supportive team.

This position will work closely with the Community Building Events team to help plan and carry out multiple events. Primary tasks include purchasing, vendor and parade entry support, volunteer recruitment and record keeping, marketing and outreach support, LED screen operation and other administrative functions.

The on-call program assistant is the primary contact for vendors, contractors, and volunteers to ensure logistical needs as well as contract terms and conditions are met.

The program assistant also serves as the on-site liaison for several events, facilitating the delivery and set-up of event equipment such as tables, chairs, pop-up canopies, marketing materials, audio-visual equipment and other supplies.

Job Summary
  • Supports the implementation of the City's communications program, including development of print publications, web content, social media, cable TV programming, and news media.
  • Maintains, recommends improvements, and implements changes to the City Constituent Customer Service Portal. Coordinates functions with software vendor and trains City staff on the effective use of the software.
  • Responds to customer inquiries regarding City and City programs: screens and prioritizes inquiries, ensuring that questions are responded to by distributing requests to the appropriate City staff or by providing service directly.
  • Assists in Council communications including preparation of staff memos, Council presentations and public speaking points.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists in researching, writing, publishing, and distributing media releases, City newsletter articles, fact sheets, and public education materials related to City programs and events.
  • Drafts and designs brochures, flyers, invitations, and other documents to promote the City and inform the public.
  • Conducts story research, script writing, and on-camera stand-up appearances for City produced videos and City cable news programming.
  • Writes, edits, proofreads, and uploads content for the City's website including integration of text, images and video.
  • Posts and monitors City social media sites and monitors external sites related to City interests.
  • Provides planning and logistical support for events such as ribbon cuttings, dedications, and public appearances of City officials and community outreach events.
  • Conducts special research projects as needed.

Peripheral Duties
  • Serves as backup Public Information Officer during emergencies and disasters working within the City's Emergency Operations Plan.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Associate degree in communications, media, graphic design, marketing, videography, or related field; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience: Three years' experience working in a similar or related position or any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in written communications, video production, media relations, development of social media content, and desktop publishing. Knowledge of local government functions preferred.
  • Or: In place of the above requirements, the incumbent may possess any combination of relevant education and experience which would demonstrate the individual's knowledge, skill, and ability to proficiently perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above.

Machines, Tools and Equipment Used: Work involves computer use and audio/visual equipment (such as digital photo and video cameras).

Physical Demands: Work involves computer use, and occasional lifting of objects up to 50 pounds such as audio-visual equipment and tables.

Working Conditions: Work is primarily performed in an office setting and at other public settings for community meetings. May be required to attend evening and weekend meetings.
