Seeking an experienced Setup Cold Heading Technician to support production within a high-volume metal forming environment. This role focuses on performing machine setups, tooling changes, and process adjustments on cold heading equipment to ensure parts are produced efficiently and meet quality standards.

The technician will play a key role in maintaining production flow by preparing machines for new jobs, resolving equipment issues, and ensuring finished components meet engineering specifications. This position requires hands-on experience with cold heading equipment, strong mechanical troubleshooting ability, and a commitment to safety and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Perform complete machine setups and changeovers on multi-die cold heading equipment.
• Install, align, and adjust tooling including dies, punches, knockouts, and cutoff components.
• Configure feed systems, timing mechanisms, and forming stations for optimal production.
• Conduct first-piece inspections and verify part quality prior to full production runs.
• Interpret blueprints, job instructions, and technical drawings to ensure proper machine configuration.
• Monitor production output and make process adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy and quality standards.
• Troubleshoot machine issues such as misfeeds, alignment problems, tooling failures, and dimensional variation.
• Inspect tooling for wear or damage and coordinate repairs or replacements when necessary.
• Use precision measuring instruments including micrometers, calipers, gauges, and optical measuring tools.
• Record setup parameters, inspection data, and production information as required.
• Follow established quality standards and manufacturing procedures.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while following all company safety policies.
• Perform lockout/tagout procedures when conducting setups or machine maintenance.
• Support process improvements aimed at reducing scrap, improving efficiency, and increasing production reliability.
• Communicate effectively with production, quality, and tooling teams to resolve manufacturing challenges.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 2–5 years of experience working with cold heading equipment or similar metal forming machinery.
• Experience performing machine setups and tooling changes in a manufacturing environment.
• Familiarity with multi-die cold heading machines (National, Sacma, Hatebur, or similar equipment).
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical documentation.
• Proficiency using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and thread gauges.
• Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
• Basic computer skills and familiarity with ERP systems and Microsoft Office tools.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively with team members and auditors.
• Strong attention to detail with a focus on product quality and safety.
• Ability to work independently while maintaining productivity and accuracy.

OGS Machining is a CNC Job Shop that is currently looking for a full-time CNC Mill Setup/Operator position. Standard shop hours are (4) ten-hour days Mon-Thurs. 6:00am 4:30pm, with occasional overtime on Fridays as needed.

OGS Machining is a medium-volume, production job shop whose average machining order is 100 - 500 pcs. 75% of our jobs are made from bar stock with the remaining 25% are machining castings or billet. All parts can easily be held in your hand, no cranes or material handling equipment are necessary. The majority of our CNC turning equipment is less than 4 years old, and state-of-the-art.

Job Summary

Responsible for set-up, occasional program editing (at the controls) and operation of vertical mills for production.

Essential Functions

• Setup mills for production machining.
• Prove out and inspect first piece for each setup.
• Troubleshoot, edit, and optimize existing programs to ensure efficient overall production (most of our programming is done at the control via G-code).
• Document new program changes and processes to ensure setups can be duplicated and overall production time is optimized.
• Oversee the quality of parts produced in the machining cell.
• To be proactively aware of work load and plan tooling requirements for future jobs ensuring minimum downtime
• To make most efficient use of machinery and equipment, including the use of proper feeds and speeds, cutter compensation and modern programming strategies.
• Inspect and deburr parts to ensure they meet blueprint specifications using proper measuring instruments. Take ownership of the quality of parts you produce.
• Help produce jigs and fixtures that improve productivity
• Use skill and caution to prevent damage to machinery and equipment (crashes, etc)
• Perform basic preventative maintenance on machinery, and keep your work area clean and tidy.
• Follow all safety policies and procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Requirements

• At least 2 years experience of working unaided on setting up and operating CNC mills In a job shop environment.
• Must have a good understanding of CNC programming structure, tooling theory, and speeds / feeds for various materials.
• Previous experience with Fanuc controls preferred.
• Any manual programming or program editing experience is a plus.
• Previous experience with Makino horizontal mills is helpful (but not required)
• Must be able to identify critical blueprint dimensions and how to inspect/ check these critical dimensions. Strong GD&T skills a plus.
• Possession of own measuring tools / gages is a plus our QC department can provide gages as needed, and will calibrate any/all personal gages owned by the employee.
• Ability to work on a wide variety of complex parts from drawings.
• Ability to change and adapt work behaviors based on a constantly changing production schedule.
• Must be dependable and detailed oriented.

• Sets up and operates induction hardening equipment to properly harden and temper and harden our product.

• Carefully loads and unloads furnaces to avoid improper quenching and cooling of parts remaining in the furnace.
• Performs running maintenance.
• Removes parts from furnace by hand or mechanical means and deposits parts in containers.
• Posts work output results to appropriate records.
• Processes parts through required cleaning or peening operations.
• Performs other related duties as directed.
• Works well with others and communicates effectively.
• Works safely and keeps work are organized and clean
