About The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering

The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering is a department within the College of Engineering at Georgia Tech and the School of Medicine at Emory University. Our community includes a student body of ~1,200 undergraduates and ~400 graduate students as well as more than 150 faculty and staff. One of the largest BME programs in the US, we graduate the most URM and Female biomedical engineers in the country. The BME department currently employs about 90 total faculty, including 5 Academic Professional track faculty, 10 Lecturer track faculty, and 5 Professors of the Practice.

Since the departments founding in 2000 the unique partnership between two of the nation's leading public and private entities has been an engine for innovative research and education. We are focused on solving some of the toughest problems facing our state, the nation, and the world and improving human health. We constantly value and work to improve our educational programs and received the 2019 Bernard M. Gordon prize for pioneering efforts in engineering education and consistently top national rankings for both undergraduate and graduate programs. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering (bme/) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia invites applications for an Academic Faculty position titled Director of Learning Innovation (DLI). The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering is hiring for an Academic Faculty (Academic Professional Track) position titled Director of Learning Innovation (DLI). A position of this type, with slightly varying titles, throughout the history of the department by 5 different people. Success in this position involves achieving three objectives: (1) Foster a culture of evidence-based teaching practices and curricular innovation, (2) improve our understanding of engineering education using educational research methods, and (3) build the national profile of the department as a leader in biomedical engineering education. We expect the focus of work in this role to be primarily the department's top ranked undergraduate program, but engaging with the graduate program may also be possible or needed. We estimate the breakdown of the Director of Learning Innovation to be approximately 15% research; 35% administration; 30% teaching and 20% service, detailed below.



Responsibilities

TEACHING (30%)
We expect the DLI's teaching responsibility to be serving as the course director for Problems in Biomedical Engineering (BMED2250). BMED2250, typically taken undergraduate's second year, uses a Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach to guide students through the development of potential solutions to a broad single-disease-focused design challenge. A similar course has been a cornerstone of the department's undergraduate curriculum since its establishment and are described in work by Newstetter (2006). The course is offered during Fall and Spring semesters and enrolls around 150 students per semester in 5 to 6 `studio sections with a weekly lecture. Critically, the course also serves to enculturate faculty to the department's philosophy of teaching. The course director is responsible for overall coordination of course instruction, managing the lecture portion of the class, training TAs and Faculty facilitators, and typically facilitating 1 studio section. Depending on the candidates background and interests, other teaching assignments may be possible.

ADMINISTATION (35%)
Achieving the three objectives for the DLI position will require the candidate to integrate curricular leadership and educational research. As a departmental leader, the DLI is responsible for identifying and guiding opportunities for curricular improvements, especially through the translation of leading educational research. They will also mentor individual faculty throughout the department about teaching, evidence-based teaching, and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning research. To do so, the DLI will work closely with other leaders in the department, TT and NTT faculty, and the Director of Faculty and Student Training.

RESEARCH (15%)

The DLI will also be expected to engage in research and research dissemination. A major focus of that work is likely to be scholarship related to their innovation work. However, they are encouraged to pursue related research independent of active innovation projects as well. Successful candidates will be those that look for both traditional and novel opportunities for scholarly dissemination. We have a special interest in candidates who can build strong relationships to share research results and promote our innovation work across Georgia Tech, biomedical engineering, and engineering education. The DLI will be encouraged to pursue external funding both to support programmatic change efforts and their own research. The department has a history of receiving funding from NIH, NSF, and KEEN to support programmatic curricular change efforts.

SERVICE (20%)
All department faculty are assigned to one to two departmental committees. It is expected that the DLI will be routinely assigned as a member of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and/or the departments Faculty Learning Committee (a yearly community of practice faculty development opportunity). The DLI will also be encouraged to pursue opportunities for professional service.



Required Qualifications

A PhD in engineering or related field is required by the start of the appointment:

Guidelines for Rank Appointment:

  • Associate Academic Professional. This is the entry-level rank and normally requires completion of the terminal degree. In exceptional cases, this rank may be used for individuals completing a terminal degree and for a period of two (2) years. If the degree is not conferred, another position appointment is required.
  • Academic Professional. This rank requires a terminal degree. It also requires significant related experience or promotion from the rank of Associate Academic Professional. Ordinarily at least three (3) years as an Associate Academic Professional is required before promotion to the rank of Academic Professional. The quality of performance and potential for development must be recognized by peers. Credit for previous academic or professional experience should be explicitly stated at the time of employment.
  • Senior Academic Professional. This rank requires a terminal degree. It also requires evidence of superior performance in the chosen field, recognition by peers (whether national, regional, or local), and successful and measurable related experience. Promotion to Senior Academic Professional from the rank of Academic Professional requires at least five (5) years at that level. Credit for previous academic or professional experience should be explicitly stated at the time of employment.
  • Principal Academic Professional. This rank requires a terminal degree. It also requires evidence of superior performance in the chosen field, recognition by peers (whether national, regional, or local), and successful and measurable related experience, including but not limited to supervision of others' work, significant responsibility, and authority within program area, and demonstrated impact. Promotion to Principal Academic Professional from the rank of Senior Academic Professional requires at least six (6) years at that level. Credit for previous academic or professional experience should be explicitly stated at the time of employment.


Preferred Qualifications

We ask that candidates describe the relevance of their PhD training in their materials.

We will give preference to those who provide evidence they meet some of the following criteria:

  • Experience with undergraduate teaching, especially in engineering courses.
  • Experience coordinating large multi-section courses, transitioning courses from lecture to non-lecture based pedagogical approaches, and/or first-year specific education.
  • Experience developing and/or implementing research-based instructional strategies.
  • Experience working with departments, courses, and students to improve the success of all students in engineering and STEM.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and assessing faculty development activities to increase the use of evidence based instructional strategies in a variety of courses.

The Wellness Empowerment Center provides upstream, innovative, and relevant programs, services and initiatives to help students and employees thrive. The team creatively designs prevention and education efforts to promote, nurture, and enrich the Georgia Tech community of health, well-being, and caring. Services include health and well-being educational programs, events and workshops, nutrition counseling, and sexual violence prevention, education and response.



Job Summary

The Dietitian role will develop and implement nutrition programs and services for the Institute community. Provides one-on-one consultation services to students related to general nutrition, eating disorders, and body image. Develops, implements, and assesses nutrition, body image, and eating disorder programming including large events, presentation requests, and outreach initiatives. Involves providing medical nutrition therapy and nutrition education and advocacy for the campus community, patients, and student groups, participating in menu planning and in program marketing and outreach efforts.

Job Duty 1 -
Provide nutrition counseling (primary and preventative interventions) and follow up care to students through self-referral or medical referral. Provide medical nutrition therapy as required based on treatment plan. Includes assessment, treatment, evaluation, and nutrition education. Must follow HIPAA and FERPA guidelines throughout the entire nutrition counseling process.

Job Duty 2 -
Must provide inclusive services to students that are focused on a health-at-every size approach, Intuitive Eating, and non-diet weight inclusive approaches.

Job Duty 3 -
Partner and consult with campus dining services to provide support with menu planning, promotional/orientation activities and outreach to students with nutrition concerns.

Job Duty 4 -
Develop and present health education and promotion programs, training, workshops, social media, and outreach initiatives on nutrition education and body positivity.

Job Duty 5 -
Collaborate with staff on departmental and interdisciplinary projects. Coordinate nutritional programming and related activities with various campus departments that will foster and create relationships with community partners that extend nutrition, body image, and eating disorder support services to students.

Job Duty 6 -
Serve as a member and provide direct support to the Multidisciplinary Eating Disorders Support team.

Job Duty 7 -
May supervise graduate assistants, dietetic interns, and student employees in planning, implementing health programs, objectives, and goals.

Perform other job-related duties as assigned

The School of Cybersecurity and Privacy, ranked #2 in Cybersecurity, is one of five schools in the #5 ranked College of Computing. Department Information

The Campus Engineering team exists to provide support to all aspects of design, construction, operation, and maintenance of campus facilities. Campus facilities include not only the buildings which are occupied by our students, faculty and staff, but it also includes central campus utility plants and the associated utility systems, including chilled water, steam, power, and natural gas

During the design process, first, our Team creates and maintains the design standards for building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, power distribution, and lighting. These standards are used by us, and by our outside consultants, to guide the design efforts of new buildings and renovation projects. Our team is also responsible for reviewing the design documents created by the consultants to ensure that their designs comply with standards.

During construction projects, our Team is often called upon to provide advice related to unforeseen conditions which are discovered during demolition work. We often provide a second review of material and equipment submittals, as well as shop drawings. On most campus construction projects, the day-to-day interaction with the contractor is managed by our co-workers within one of the Construction teams. However, on a few projects we may be called on to manage those day-to-day contractor activities.

Post construction, and throughout the life of the facilities, our team serves to provide advice to our Operation & Maintenance teams, and our Utilities Maintenance team, when a problem grows larger than their capacity. We also plan and prepare the way for projects to replace equipment as it nears the end of life. We are always looking ahead for opportunities to increase efficiency and resiliency in the systems.

Job Summary

Provide basic electrical engineering services in support of either the operation and maintenance of the campus electrical distribution system or the design, construction and operation of electrical equipment, components or systems associated with research efforts within an academic or research unit. This position will interact on a consistent basis with: facilities management and utilities personnel or research management and faculty; co-workers, vendors, suppliers and contractors. About the School of Computing Instruction at the Georgia Institute of Technology

With more students graduating with a Computer Science degree than any other major at Georgia Tech and the Institute's requirement that every student complete at least one programming course, quality instruction on the foundations of computing has never been more important. The School of Computing Instruction (SCI) was created to serve these critical needs within Georgia Tech and beyond. Our award-winning teaching-focused faculty have three core missions:

Platform for Creativity and Innovation. SCI's creative faculty boldly experiment with new ideas and approaches to pedagogy, while continually re-examining proven methods to ensure their approach is effective and practical across a different set of courses and students. Ultimately, we consider SCI a platform for meaningful experimentation and invite collaborations both within and beyond Georgia Tech to further push the envelope in computing education.

Scalability of Computing Instruction. SCI's faculty design and serve as primary instructors for the College's array of introductory computer science courses, direct the junior design/capstone program for our undergraduate computing majors, and teach a selection of upper-division and graduate level courses that reflect our faculty's varied interests. At the undergraduate level, SCI faculty teach a third of the College's 1000-4000 level course offerings or half of the nearly 9000 undergraduate computing course seats each semester. Job Summary

The School of Computing Instruction (SCI) at Georgia Institute of Technology within the College of Computing was recently founded to recognize the significant contributions of CS teaching-track faculty. We invite applications for multiple full-time and long-term faculty positions. The official appointment of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer will be made depending on past teaching experience. Both positions are offered with renewable contracts with an expectation to start in 2025 on Georgia Institute of Technology Atlanta campus. Summer teaching for additional compensation is typically available. In addition, SCI faculty are typically allowed to teach at one of Georgia Tech's multiple study-abroad campuses (Berlin, Barcelona, Metz, etc.) during the summer.

The top candidates will be invited to Atlanta for an on-site interview, which involves giving a sample lecture.



Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to providing high-quality undergraduate teaching, primarily within the technical communications component of the College's capstone design program. Opportunities to teach graduate courses are also available, as candidates will be matched to courses for which they are the best fit. The School of Interactive Computing () at the Georgia Institute of Technology invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position. Applicants will be considered at all ranks.

Beyond our hiring focus areas mentioned above, the 50+ faculty members of the School of Interactive Computing also pursue research on artificial intelligence and machine learning; human-centered computing and cognitive science; information visualization and visual analytics; learning science and technology, and computing education; robotics; computational journalism; ubiquitous and wearable computing; and virtual and augmented environments. Together, these areas form a rich, panoramic view of the myriad ways computing and computational devices interact with their human creators and users.



Job Summary

We seek applications in the broader areas of Computer Graphics, Computer Vision, and Social Computing. While these areas are of strategic importance to the School and the Institute, we will consider truly outstanding candidates in all areas of computing research that support the School's interdisciplinary mission and expand it in strategic directions.



Responsibilities

The School of Architecture is one of five schools in the College of Design. Other schools include The School of Industrial Design, The School of Building Construction, The School of City and Regional Planning, and The School of Music Technology. Job Summary

The Georgia Institute of Technologys School of Architecture invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at Associate or Full Professor in the School of Architecture in the area of Architecture and Design Computing. The successful candidate will: First, lead the development of research agendas in this area; second, serve as steward for the Eastman Fund to support doctoral students; and third, work with the School Chair and the Dean in order to reshape the mission of the Digital Building Lab (DBL).

The DBL was created by professor Chuck Eastman to address design computation, data standards and interoperability. Over the years it has housed studies in design and construction automation; project delivery systems; and smart buildings, infrastructure and environments, often working in conjunction with the Digital Fabrication Lab which provides a setting for design-build projects for the faculty and the students. The DBL has also fostered collaborations between the faculty of the School of Architecture, the School of Building Construction and the School of Industrial Design, as well as collaborations with the research labs of the faculty including the Shape Computation Lab (SCL) and the High Performance Buildings Lab. Under professor Chuck Eastman, funding came from both successful research applications and from industry memberships. The partnerships with industry fostered and sustained a link between academic research and advances in practice as well as in research internal to major architecture firms. Now is the time to redefine and revitalize the vision and the mission of the lab, taking into account current developments in artificial intelligence, data-based design decisions, and advanced digital modeling of buildings and their performance.



Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the successful candidate include securing and conducting funded research, stewarding the future identity and growth of DBL, mentoring early career researchers, advising PhD students, leading the development of forward-looking curricula for the MS Arch and PhD programs, and teaching advanced graduate courses in candidate's area of expertise.



Required Qualifications

Candidate must have a terminal professional degree in Architecture or an allied discipline.



Preferred Qualifications

A strong record of publications on architectural and design computation and/or the development of digital technologies applicable to building design and construction; and a strong track record of sponsored research, industry collaboration, and teaching. A Doctoral Degree is preferred. An interest and ability to relate research to studio teaching is welcome but studio teaching is not a requirement for this position.
