THE CONTEXT

PEMBs are a highly technical product that requires a level of engineering effort to generate an accurate proposal to secure project awards in a highly competitive market. In the past, we have relied on our production engineering team to support our sales efforts. With our recent, and expected future, growth, we are now looking to bring this engineering expertise directly into the sales team.

 We are looking for an experienced metal building engineer that enjoys solving difficult design problems (we don’t build boxes, check out our project gallery on our website) using the best tools available in the industry, all in a collaborative, challenging, and team-based sales process. This role reports directly to the CEO of the company, who is also the Sales Leader, and will be a key partner in enabling the continued growth and success of our business. THE ROLE

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Metal Building Engineer to serve as THE technical resource on our sales team. In this role, you will use your knowledge of metal building system design, with tools like Metal Building Software (MBS), RISA 3D, Enercalc and others, to develop accurate estimates, preliminary designs, and cost-effective solutions for pre-engineered metal buildings (PEMB), steel structures, and related systems. You will create preliminary material takeoffs (using our internally-developed automated tools) and Excel summaries as part of a broader estimating effort (Hint: this is a team role and is very collaborative). Additionally, you will support our outside sales and business development activities with the generation of building concepts, schematic designs, and general technical guidance. Success in this role is defined as owning and delivering the technical aspects of our overall sales process.

(NOTE: This is a true engineering role, not a sales role. This role will not have to carry a sales quota.)

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare accurate and competitive metal building preliminary designs, and material takeoffs using industry-standard software (e.g., Metal Building Software (MBS), Tekla Structures, RISA 3D, Enercalc, CFS, Bluebeam Revu, and Excel)
  • Perform preliminary structural design and layout of pre-engineered metal building systems, including complex framing, hybrid structures, and conventional steel buildings
  • Ensure all estimates and designs comply with current building codes, local regulations, wind/seismic loads, and company engineering standards
  • Collaborate closely with MBI outside sales executives, customers, architects, engineers, and contractors to understand project requirements, provide technical recommendations, and offer value-engineering suggestions to optimize cost, performance, and constructability
  • Serve as the technical subject matter expert during customer meetings, presentations, and site visits; explain product features, structural capabilities, material options, and system benefits clearly and persuasively
  • Support the full sales cycle: respond to RFQs/RFPs, conduct technical discovery, deliver product demonstrations, prepare proposals, and assist in negotiations to close deals
  • Review and interpret architectural/engineering drawings, specifications, and bid documents to develop tailored solutions
  • Provide post-sale technical support to facilitate handing off the project to our operations teams for execution
  • Stay current on industry trends, new products, building codes, and competitive offerings; contribute competitive intelligence to the team
  • Collaborate with MBI’s Director of Engineering on internal best practices to improve the design, performance and efficiency of our tools and processes related to design and engineering tasks

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, with experience in the Structural discipline
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification; SE is NOT required for this position
  • 7+ years of engineering experience with 3+ years in metal building design
  • Proficiency in metal building design software (MBS) required
  • Familiarity with 3D tools such as Revit, Tekla, or SketchUp required
  • Solid understanding of structural steel design principles, building codes (IBC, ASCE 7, AISC), load calculations, and metal building components/systems

These positions are anticipated to be assigned primarily to commercial and residential plan review.

Essential Duties

Building Inspector/Plans Examiner III
Leads and coordinates members of the development review and inspection teams to ensure a timely, predictable, comprehensive and accurate plan review and inspection process for any development proposal.

Reviews and inspects residential, commercial, industrial, and multi-family development proposals to ensure compliance with State and City codes/ordinances, engineering/architectural, and fire/life safety principles.

Depending on the Division's needs, performs construction plan review and site inspections:

  • Conducts Pre-Development, Plan Intake, and Pre-Construction meetings.
  • Takes the lead in coordinating plan reviews and inspections internally, with customers, and with other departments and agencies.
  • Maintains communication with contractors to anticipate and resolve onsite issues.
  • Performs building safety inspections and plan reviews.
  • Calculates and assesses fees.
  • Monitors permit and project status and follow-up with expired applications and permits.
  • Maintains accurate records and files of construction plan reviews, inspections, and related correspondence. Archives documents as required.
  • Manages phased development and deferred submittal process for assigned projects.

High school diploma, or equivalent required. Associates degree in Building Inspection Technology, Drafting, Engineering, Fire Prevention, or other related field preferred.

Four years of formal education, training, and/or experience in construction management, architecture, structural engineering, building design, construction inspection, and/or plan review providing the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of construction practices, engineering concepts, and architectural principles.

Excellent customer service, communication, and public relations skills and the ability to mediate adversarial situations. Ability to proactively anticipate and mitigate problem areas before they become issues.

Section I: Brief Summary of the Job.
Under the supervision of the Community Development Director, the Building Official is an exempt position under FLSA. This employee is responsible for the overall guidance, direction and management of the City's building code function which includes overseeing and enforcing city codes by inspecting buildings, plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems of construction projects and existing structures within the City of Spring Hill. In addition, this employee coordinates and oversees the activities and operations related to plan review, issuance of building permits, building construction inspection services and coordination of assigned activities. This position should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, and effective organizational, public relations, customer service and communication skills.

Section II: Essential Duties of the Job.
  • Oversee building code compliance, managing inspections and ensuring safety standards in construction projects.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state and local building codes and regulations including reviewing plans, issuing permits and conducting inspections.
  • Analyze architectural plans and specifications to ensure they meet safety and regulatory standards.
  • Perform field inspections on industrial, commercial and residential buildings.
  • Enforce and abate building code violations in existing structures.
  • Oversees and follows the City's adopted codes inspection and permit issuance programs.

Section III: Education, Formal Training and/or Certifications.
Bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, architecture or a related field required. A combination of education and experience may be considered. Master's degree in construction or related field preferred. Valid driver's license required.
  • ICC certification for Commercial Building Inspector and Plans Examiner required.
  • Must obtain ICC Combination Plans, Fire Plans Review and Inspection certification within 1 year of hire.
  • Must obtain ICC Certified Floodplain Manager certification within 1 year of hire.
  • Specialized ICC certifications such as plumbing and/or electrical desired.
  • Certified Building Official (CBO) or Master Code Professional (MCP) preferred.
Section IV: Experience.
Five years of similar or related experience required. Two years of supervisory experience preferred.

Section V: Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities.
A thorough knowledge of building inspections, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems, federal, state and local building regulations and codes is required. This employee must be able to operate computers, department vehicles, electrical testing equipment, copiers, and other office equipment. The ability to interpret building codes and regulations, to prepare reports, to understand and anticipate problems, and to understand written instructions, reports, proposals, specifications, blueprints, schematics, and code books is required. The ability to handle stress effectively, organize, set priorities and exercise independent judgement. Must be able to facilitate group processes, implement effective problem-solving solutions and build consensus. This employee should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, and effective public relations, customer service, organizational, oral and written communication skills.

Financial Accountability: This employee is responsible for the care and safe operation of department equipment, does have limited authority to purchase necessary department supplies, and participates in the annual budget process. Personal Relations: Daily contact with the general public, co-workers, supervisory personnel, and City Administrator. Occasional contact with the governing body is expected.

This is a highly responsible position that supports the health, safety and welfare of Tribal members and the public. The incumbent in this position is responsible for managing the regulation and inspection of building construction, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing installations and directing compliance and enforcement of all related federal, state and local ordinances of the Seminole Tribe of Florida (STOF). Work involves technical review of all types of construction drawings, plans, and specifications to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances. The incumbent provides general oversight, management, and leadership to building inspectors, plans examiners, and permit technicians as required and is responsible for the issuance of all permits and Certificates of Occupancy in accordance with the Florida Building Code and Tribal administrative policy. The person is also responsible for the administration of the Tribe’s elevator and commercial structure annual inspections programs.


The individual works closely with the Director of the Tribal Inspector’s Department to support all departmental programs and initiatives, including but not limited to the development of the departmental budget and strategic plans, development of building inspections processes and programs, evaluation and improvement of service delivery systems, and administration of the Tribe’s Unsafe Structures Ordinance Program. The incumbent may attend Tribal Council meetings or other community meetings and works with all necessary stakeholders to resolve complaints, address concerns, or solve problems as needed. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Building Construction, Civil Engineering, Architecture or related field is required. Master’s degree is preferred. A minimum of ten (10) years of experience as an Architect, Engineer, Building Inspector, Build Code Administrator, or Construction Superintendent with at least five (5) years being in a supervisory capacity is required; or, any equivalent combination of education, experience and training will be considered.


Prior experience with EnerGov software system is preferred. Possession and maintenance of a Building Code Administrator certification by the Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspector’s Board is required. Must have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills including the ability to clearly communicate complex ideas in English both orally and in writing.
