Labor and Delivery is seeking a skilled and compassionate full time Surgical Technologist to join our dedicated maternity team.

The schedule is 36 hours per week with day/night rotating schedule, including weekends.

This position plays a vital role in ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality care for mothers and newborns during labor, delivery and recovery.

The L&D Surg Tech is responsible for preparing surgical suites, maintaining sterile field, assisting with C-sections and other obstetrical procedures, and ensuring all instruments and equipment are properly cleaned and handled.

Our Labor & Delivery Unit is a Level III referral center, which provides care to both normal and high-risk laboring and ante partum patients.

Approximately 4,200 babies are born each year at UNC Medical Center.

Several thousand patients are also seen in the triage area.

In addition, our providers and staff perform numerous high-risk procedures such as vaginal and cerclage placements, amniocentesis and versions as well as various fetal procedures, including IUTs, fetal shunt placements and exit procedures.

The unit consists of 15 labor and delivery rooms, 5 triage rooms, a 2-bed recovery room, and 3 operating rooms.

Anesthesia coverage is provided 24/7.

Summary: The Surgical Technologist II works under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

Surgical technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

- Assures that adequate supplies are available in the modality.
- Attends and productively participates in Lead Meetings and department meetings.
- Serves as an advocate for the Imaging Department and is a liaison for other hospital departments.

- Assists in the hiring process of new personnel, and ensures appropriate on-boarding efforts to validate competency assessments and departmental orientation.
- Participates in the competency process for NM technologists on an annual basis.

Equipment

- Demonstrates the ability to adjust technique so that patient receives the best study possible and that image quality is maintained.
- Reports problems regarding malfunctioning equipment to supervisor or service provider, so that problem can be corrected in a timely manner.
- Cleans, disinfects and maintains equipment in accordance with infection control policy and department cleaning schedule.

Patient Care

- Verifies proper clinician order for procedure.
- Obtains complete clinical history, gathers examination data and assesses for contraindicating conditions.
- Follows established procedures for the administration of radiopharmaceuticals so that no patient condition deteriorates, and no patient suffers undue pain, due to error or poor technique.
- Ensures that all studies have proper patient identification and right and left marker are utilized appropriately.
- Reviews images for clinically acceptable results and releases patients.
- Responds to emergency situations and provides for the restocking of the crash cart and maintenance of life support equipment.
- Assists other technologists in all modalities when needed.
- Observes patient condition and properly evaluates situations when physician intervention is necessary so that no patient condition deteriorates.
- Verifies correct identity of patient using 2 unique identifiers prior to performing a procedure per hospital policy and procedure.
- Ensures patient's privacy and comfort is accommodated.

Quality Control

- Consistently produces acceptable images, as evidenced by radiologist feedback and quality audits.

- Sends all studies to PACS immediately after completion, prints CD’s as needed.
- Studies that have been transmitted after hours to teleradiography are printed and scanned in PACS, if applicable.
- Completes all studies in RIS before completing in PACS.
- Prints completed log sheet from teleradiography and submits to Radiologist, if applicable.

Operations

- Restocks linens and supplies, and maintains NM department in clean and orderly condition.
- Transports patients, positions patients, and helps them on and off procedure table.
- Performs patient charging activities on the day the service is rendered.
- Applies supportive and immobilization devices and equipment.
- Willingly lends knowledge and assistance to others upon request as needed and routinely as time is available, without prompting, so that all working time is used for departmental advantage.
- Performs routine duties of clerical and support personnel in accordance with procedure when warranted to ensure continuity and quality of services.

* Acts as a resource to the Pathologists. Resolves any issues they require.
* Fields problem phone calls and resolves issues. Checks the critical logs.

SPECIAL ASSIGNED DUTIES MAY INCLUDE:

- Acute care hospital setting within a cardiac-only nuclear medicine department
- Department includes 4 SPECT locations and 1 Cardiac PET department; all techs rotate through each location
- Adult and geriatric patient population
- Average daily caseload of approximately 10 cases per site
- EMR systems include Epic (required), Spectrum Dynamics, NucTrac/Syntrac, and Syngo Dynamics
- Day shifts, 5x8 hours, scheduled anytime between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM
- Every other weekend required
- Occasional weekend and holiday call coverage (Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM)
- Float within the facility and across all nuclear medicine locations per scope of practice as needed

Requirements

- Minimum of 1 year of Nuclear Medicine Technologist experience
- Current BLS required
