As a Senior Structural Design Engineer, you’ll oversee multiple structural projects from start to finish—designing anchorage, seismic bracing, and vibration isolation systems for HVAC, plumbing, and piping equipment. In this role, you’ll balance hands-on design work with mentorship, task delegation, and cross-functional collaboration. You’ll also serve as a subject matter expert, supporting both project execution and team development.


What you will do

  • Manage multiple structural projects that vary in complexity, owning design execution from inception to delivery.
  • Review incoming design requests, prioritize workload, and delegate design tasks to junior engineers based on skill and capacity.
  • Mentor and coach Design Engineers I and II, providing guidance on design best practices, code interpretation, and field challenges.
  • Provide input to the Structural Lead on workload planning and team development efforts, and maintaining internal standards and preferred product documentation.
  • Serve as the team’s subject matter expert on anchorage and vibration isolation design, including advanced knowledge of system applications, product options, and limitations.
  • Design structural support systems, including seismic bracing, anchorage, and isolation systems for HVAC, plumbing, and piping systems.
  • Perform structural calculations for non-structural components in compliance with applicable codes and standards (CBC, CMC, IBC, ASCE 7, ACI, ANSI, AISC, NDS, SMACNA, and ASHRAE).
  • Coordinate with manufacturers and vendors to select, validate, and confirm compatibility of anchorage and isolation components with both design criteria and field conditions.
  • Collaborate closely with Project Managers, Detailers, Superintendents, and Foremen to evaluate constructability, resolve field constraints, and coordinate timely revisions.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for internal stakeholders on structural design matters, participating in engineering turnover meetings, project meetings, and design coordination efforts.
  • Create and compile detailed anchorage and bracing calculation packages, including CAD-generated details, with clear and consistent presentation.
  • Stamp design packages with a current PE license where required for permit submissions or code compliance.
  • Attend manufacturer-led training sessions, industry seminars, and SVM’s internal Learning & Development courses to stay current on evolving codes, standards, and best practices in structural design.


Education, Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Architectural, or Structural Engineering required.
  • 8+ years’ of structural design experience with a minimum of 3+ years designing structural components for HVAC & Plumbing projects/systems required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in California or Nevada required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-engineers required.
  • Proven ability to support multiple projects with shifting priorities and fast-paced schedules required.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, REVIT, Bluebeam, RISA-3D, Microsoft Office Products, and anchor design software preferred.
  • Knowledge of applicable building codes and seismic design criteria required.
  • Advanced knowledge of mechanical systems, equipment anchorage, and seismic bracing in the MEP industry required.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with a commitment to producing accurate and high-quality work a must.
  • Demonstrated success mentoring and coaching engineers at various levels a plus.

THE CONTEXT

THE ROLE

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Metal Building Engineer to serve as THE technical resource on our sales team. In this role, you will use your knowledge of metal building system design, with tools like Metal Building Software (MBS), RISA 3D, Enercalc and others, to develop accurate estimates, preliminary designs, and cost-effective solutions for pre-engineered metal buildings (PEMB), steel structures, and related systems. You will create preliminary material takeoffs (using our internally-developed automated tools) and Excel summaries as part of a broader estimating effort (Hint: this is a team role and is very collaborative). Additionally, you will support our outside sales and business development activities with the generation of building concepts, schematic designs, and general technical guidance. Success in this role is defined as owning and delivering the technical aspects of our overall sales process.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare accurate and competitive metal building preliminary designs, and material takeoffs using industry-standard software (e.g., Metal Building Software (MBS), Tekla Structures, RISA 3D, Enercalc, CFS, Bluebeam Revu, and Excel)
  • Perform preliminary structural design and layout of pre-engineered metal building systems, including complex framing, hybrid structures, and conventional steel buildings
  • Ensure all estimates and designs comply with current building codes, local regulations, wind/seismic loads, and company engineering standards
  • Collaborate closely with MBI outside sales executives, customers, architects, engineers, and contractors to understand project requirements, provide technical recommendations, and offer value-engineering suggestions to optimize cost, performance, and constructability
  • Serve as the technical subject matter expert during customer meetings, presentations, and site visits; explain product features, structural capabilities, material options, and system benefits clearly and persuasively
  • Support the full sales cycle: respond to RFQs/RFPs, conduct technical discovery, deliver product demonstrations, prepare proposals, and assist in negotiations to close deals
  • Review and interpret architectural/engineering drawings, specifications, and bid documents to develop tailored solutions
  • Provide post-sale technical support to facilitate handing off the project to our operations teams for execution

  • Evaluate nonconforming components and determine repair feasibility; develop and validate repair schemes in coordination with Engineering and Quality functions

Position Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or relevant technical discipline, or HS Diploma/GED w/equivalent composite/aerospace manufacturing/repair experience. 5+ years of technical experience with composites and/or aerospace components production or repair.

Desired Characteristics

  • Demonstrated experience creating, structuring, and maintaining complex multi-level Bills of Material (BOMs) for aerospace assemblies, ensuring configuration control and production readiness.
  • Proven experience in the developing and implementing machining strategies of large-scale metallic aerospace structures, including fixturing for both Milling and Turning.
  • Hands-on experience machining large metallic aerospace components, including process planning, tooling strategy, and dimensional validation.
  • Strong proficiency in engineering drawing interpretation, including advanced Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) application and tolerance analysis.
  • Working knowledge of CAD systems such as CATIA, SolidWorks, NX; ability to interrogate models to support manufacturability and tooling design decisions.
  • Experience designing and validating manufacturing tooling for, including production fixtures, machining/holding fixtures and assembly aids.
  • Demonstrated change management capability, including leading engineering change implementation across cross-functional teams; ability to manage risk, stakeholder alignment, and execution discipline.
  • Strategic thinker capable of translating high-level engineering change initiatives into structured, tactical execution plans; analytical, data-driven, and results-oriented.
  • Strong background in continuous improvement methodologies including Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, and ACE; proven record of measurable operational improvements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence across organizational levels; demonstrated ability to build engagement and sustain a culture of operational excellence
  • Strong familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) required.
