Position description

The College Writing Programs at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach courses in the College Writing Programs should an opening arise.



Job Duties: Successful applicants will teach in CWP's Reading and Composition sequence or other CWP courses in writing, reading, and oral communication. They will have complete responsibility for classes to include teaching in a classroom environment, meeting with students during scheduled weekly office hours and by appointment, and grading student work.



Foreign applicants must also have permission to work in the U.S. by start date.



UC lecturers are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council - American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement of the UC-AFT.

The School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley is accepting applications for qualified temporary, part-time instructors to teach both during the regular academic-year year and in our Summer Minor program. Applicants will be reviewed for positions as needs arise. As a professional school, the School of Journalism is seeking practitioners to bring real-world experience to the classroom. Among the needs we generally have, we are often seeking practitioners with skills in:



- News writing and reporting, either in daily reporting or long-form narrative writing.

- Video news, including documentary filmmaking or short form video storytelling.

- Audio news, including podcasting, radio reporting, audio editing or sound design.

- Multimedia storytelling, including visual design, audience engagement, social media, emerging story forms like VR/AR, and mobile platforms.

- Data journalism, including data visualization, data coding (Python or R), spreadsheets, public records, and similar tools used for data-driven stories.

- Topical expertise, including but not limited to climate change, science, politics, business, race and inequality, investigative reporting, or other topical expertise.



The School seeks candidates who can support the success of all students through inclusive curriculum, classroom environment, and pedagogy. Instructors will be offered pedagogical training on inclusive teaching practices to ensure their teaching materials come from the widest range of perspectives.



Appointments for primary instructors will be made in the Lecturer title. Time commitments vary depending on the class, but are typically one day a week of teaching for two or three hours. Other duties include ancillary responsibilities like holding office hours, assigning grades, attending appropriate meetings / orientations, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and maintaining a course website. Candidates may also be considered for hourly appointments as Teacher-Special Programs (TSP). TSPs teach a narrow subject as part of another course, or assist courses in other ways. New England Elite Basketball is seeking a passionate, organized, and experienced basketball leader to serve as the Elementary & Middle School Boys Director beginning in June 2026.


This role is responsible for leading and developing the elementary and middle school boys basketball divisions within the New England Elite program, while helping build a strong long-term pipeline of players prepared for high school and beyond. The Director will oversee coaching, player development, program structure, and seasonal programming for grades 3–8, while also working closely with leadership to expand participation and strengthen the program’s foundation. This is a part-time stipend position with performance-based bonuses tied to program growth and development.


Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing all elementary and middle school boys teams (Grades 3–8)
  • Developing a clear developmental curriculum aligned with the New England Elite philosophy
  • Ensuring consistent teaching of fundamentals, basketball IQ, and team concepts
  • Supporting and mentoring coaches working within the elementary and middle school program
  • Maintaining high standards for professionalism, communication, and player development


Coaching Responsibilities

The Director will also serve as a head coach within the program. Coaching at least one team within the elementary or middle school divisions


Summer League & Camp Oversight

The Director will help manage the program’s summer development opportunities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating New England Elite Summer Leagues
  • Assisting with planning and running summer camps and development clinics
  • Helping recruit players to participate in leagues and camps
  • Ensuring camps emphasize skill development, competition, and fun


HGAL Feeder Program Development


A major component of this role is helping build a middle school pipeline that feeds into the program’s HGAL high school teams.

Responsibilities include:

  • Working with HGAL program directors to establish a structured feeder system
  • Developing competitive 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teams
  • Preparing players for future participation in the HGAL circuit
  • Identifying players with long-term potential


The Director will play an active role in expanding the New England Elite youth program.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting tryouts and player evaluations
  • Helping recruit new players and families

Assisting with youth development initiatives


Preferred candidates should have: Prior basketball coaching experience at the youth, middle school, or high school level and Strong understanding of player development and skill progression. Former college players, current high school coaches, and experienced AAU coaches are encouraged to apply.


Compensation

This position includes a Seasonal stipend, in addition to performance bonuses based on program growth

Position Summary

The Part-time School Food Professional plays a critical role in supporting the daily lunch operations to ensure a safe, orderly, and positive dining experience for students. The Part-time School Food Professional prepares meals, supervises students during meal periods, reinforces school expectations, maintains cleanliness in the cafeteria/pantry, and assists with operational needs related to food service.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Sets-up assigned station with appropriate items before meal service; checks for cleanliness before starting preparation of food.
  • Assembles prepared food on trays for scholars according to menu.
  • Preparing and heating food following DOH protocols.
  • Serves food at proper temperatures utilizing appropriate kitchen equipment.
  • Cleans kitchen, dining areas and pantry.
  • Washes, sanitizes and/or sterilizes dishes, working areas/surfaces, utensils and equipment.
  • Collects, transports and/or disposes of garbage and trash in designated containers; runs appropriate items through a sink utilizing appropriate cleaning and sanitizing agent(s).
  • Maintaining compliance with sanitation guidelines.
  • Update menu board daily with breakfast and lunch being provided for the day.
  • Keep meal count by using a clicker for every meal a scholar has for compliance purposes.
  • Supervise students during assigned lunch periods to ensure safety and appropriate behavior.
  • Enforce school rules, expectations, and cafeteria procedures consistently and respectfully.
  • Monitor student movement to and from the cafeteria, hallways, and designated lunch areas.
  • Address minor behavioral concerns and report ongoing or serious issues to school administration.
  • Assist with organizing student entries and exit to ensure efficient lunch flow.
  • Help maintain orderly lunch lines and seating arrangements.
  • Encourage students to clean up after themselves and dispose of trash properly.
  • Report spills, hazards, or maintenance issues promptly to Operations Team.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students by demonstrating professionalism and respect.
  • Build positive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Support the overall mission and culture of the school.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, families, school administrators, teachers and staff.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work effectively with adolescents in a school setting.
  • Ability to stand and move for extended periods.
  • Reliable, punctual, and professional demeanor.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience working in a charter school or cafeteria role.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
