Position description

The School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley is accepting applications for qualified temporary, part-time instructors to teach both during the regular academic-year year and in our Summer Minor program. Applicants will be reviewed for positions as needs arise. As a professional school, the School of Journalism is seeking practitioners to bring real-world experience to the classroom. Among the needs we generally have, we are often seeking practitioners with skills in:



- News writing and reporting, either in daily reporting or long-form narrative writing.

- Video news, including documentary filmmaking or short form video storytelling.

- Audio news, including podcasting, radio reporting, audio editing or sound design.

- Multimedia storytelling, including visual design, audience engagement, social media, emerging story forms like VR/AR, and mobile platforms.

- Data journalism, including data visualization, data coding (Python or R), spreadsheets, public records, and similar tools used for data-driven stories.

- Topical expertise, including but not limited to climate change, science, politics, business, race and inequality, investigative reporting, or other topical expertise.



The School seeks candidates who can support the success of all students through inclusive curriculum, classroom environment, and pedagogy. Instructors will be offered pedagogical training on inclusive teaching practices to ensure their teaching materials come from the widest range of perspectives.



Appointments for primary instructors will be made in the Lecturer title. Time commitments vary depending on the class, but are typically one day a week of teaching for two or three hours. Other duties include ancillary responsibilities like holding office hours, assigning grades, attending appropriate meetings / orientations, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and maintaining a course website. Candidates may also be considered for hourly appointments as Teacher-Special Programs (TSP). TSPs teach a narrow subject as part of another course, or assist courses in other ways. Time commitments for TSPs vary, and in most cases are only for a limited period of the semester.



Unless otherwise noted, it should be expected that classes will be held in-person so candidates will be required in most cases to physically teach at UC Berkeley campus. Please refer to our job openings link for any limited remote-teaching opportunities.

Being an on-call employee means that your work schedule is not guaranteed, hours worked could range from 0 - 40 hours a week, depending on office needs. The On-Call Building Inspector I position is responsible for inspecting construction of new industrial, commercial, multifamily, and single-family buildings, and remodel work to existing structures, to ensure compliance with approved plans, laws, codes, and regulations, thereby ensuring minimum standards for fire and life/safety codes, structural integrity, and public welfare.

Principal Accountabilities:
  • Inspect buildings and structures to ensure compliance with laws, codes, and regulations relating to building construction, mechanical systems, plumbing systems, state energy code requirements, local zoning requirements, and job site erosion control.
  • Investigate compliance complaints and, if necessary, mediate a resolution.
Distinguishing Characteristics: Upon obtaining the International Code Council (ICC) Commercial Building Inspector certification, ICC Commercial Mechanical Inspector certification, and either the ICC Commercial Plumbing Inspector certification or the IAPMO UPC Residential and Commercial certifications, an incumbent in the On-Call Building Inspector I classification will move to the On-Call Building Inspector II classification.

Essential Functions: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills.   • Conducts site inspections of new and old commercial and residential buildings and structures to ensure compliance with approved plans and codes, notes violations. Reinspects to ensure all noted violations have been corrected. The incumbent has the authority to stop work on a construction site if code violations are not corrected and makes the final approval of a structure prior to occupancy.
  • Plans and schedules routes in order to ensure the most efficient use of time.
  • Answers questions and provides technical advice related to building and structure code compliance.
  • Investigates and responds to complaints regarding code compliance; informs individual making the complaint if a violation occurred and, if so, what corrective action has been taken.
  • Logs daily inspections and prepares inspection reports.
  • Reads special inspection reports for compliance and files reports.
  • Inspects sites for grading and soil excavation or other land modifications. Makes a visual survey of the construction site to determine if a licensed survey is to be required for setback verification.
  • Responds to public and contractor inquiries concerning interpretation of the National Electrical and related codes, construction problems, and City administrative procedures. This requires clear, concise, oral and written communication skills.
  • Monitors construction to see that it is completed before occupancy of the building, the permit expires, or sees that the permit is renewed in a timely fashion.
  • Maintains adequate records to assure proper documentation of inspections.
  • Inspects nonstructural problems with building sites, such as surface water problems and inadequate access, and assures that they are corrected or referred to the appropriate City department.
  • Position requires daily use of computer. Incumbent must have, or be able to learn, basic keyboard and computer skills.
  • Performs daily inspections of vehicles to include checking tires and lights and determining if service is necessary.
  • Fosters a positive and supportive work environment; promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in the workplace, contributing to an environment of respectful living and working in a multicultural society.
Peripheral Duties:
  • Attends staff meetings to discuss Building Department and City issues and to discuss changes in policy and codes.

Job Responsibilities

Supplemental Information

Salary: The advertised salary is based on full-time employment and includes shortage and school year differentials, if applicable.

The Leasing Administrator assists the VP of Leasing and Investments along with the Legal Team in the timely and accurate preparation, execution, and abstracting of all leases. This individual must maintain high productivity levels to ensure each project is completed in a fast-paced, accurate, and organized manner. This individual is also responsible for estoppels and SNDAs as required on the purchase or sale of a property.

·      Prepare and distribute executed LOIs as needed

·      Redline new LOIs as needed

·      Draft initial leases, amendments, and exhibits at the request of the Legal Team in an accurate and timely manner

·      Abstract final leases, route for approval and execution

·      Distribute executed leases to tenants as required

·      Provide key dates such as due diligence, permit contingencies, delivery dates, plan approvals, and acquisition dates to Development Team and other teams

·      Identify, task out and track all lease obligations

·      Manage and track leases and their corresponding obligations throughout the lifecycle of a lease

·      Send lease documentation to brokers and request first half commission invoices on a regular basis

·      Calculate commissions due to brokers and ensure accuracy of broker invoices and submit for payment

·      Acquire SNDAs and MOLs from tenants as needed

·      Issue rent commencement date notices to tenants

·      Prepare and email acquisition notices

·      Email change of ownership documentation to tenants upon purchase of existing building

·      Coordinate signage with Dealmaker and Development Team

·      Review marketing packages for accuracy of lease information

·      Create and send ROFR notices

·      Prepare and send estoppels on a regular basis as well as SNDAs when required

·      Determine if any commission payments need to be made at closing

·      Input and track tenant dates and deliverables in the internal tracking system

 

Marginal Duties

·      Prepare lease amendments for approvals and signatures as needed

·      Update key dates based on amendments or extension notices in software program for Development Team

·      Process renewals with VP of Leasing, Chief Legal Officer and CEO as required
