Position Summary
The Physician Assistant provides health care services to patients under the direction and supervision of a physician. The PA will support orthopaedic surgeons in both clinical and surgical settings.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Prepare charts, x-rays, and templates for the operating room (OR) and return them to the office.
- Review x-rays, check OR room for instruments, supplies, and implants.
- Position patients on the OR table and assist with surgical procedures (e.g., apply tourniquet, drape patient, hold retractors, manipulate limbs, cauterize vessels, sponge and suction wounds, skin closures).
- Apply dressings, splints, immobilizers, and slings as directed.
- Transfer patients from OR to recovery and assist with room turnover.
- Maintain privately owned instruments and prepare for upcoming surgeries.
- Perform comprehensive and problem-focused histories and physical exams.
- Interpret laboratory and diagnostic procedures and order tests as directed.
- Conduct hospital rounds, write orders, and take calls for orthopaedic surgeons.
- Evaluate and manage hospitalized patients, including discharge summaries and treatment plans.
- Screen emergency room patients and provide sports team game coverage as needed.
- Order, prescribe, dispense, and administer medication, orthoses, braces, and other orthopaedic devices (per state law).
- Participate in research studies, manage databases, and perform quality assurance.
- Assist wherever needed within the team.
- Perform minor procedures such as wound care and joint injections.
- Share in the physician on-call schedule.
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

* Performs complete pre-operative History and Physicals on all surgical patients, identifying and alerting the surgeon to any disqualifying conditions that are present.
* Sees new and follow-up patients and provides problem-oriented intervention for their urological conditions
* Interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests

Procedures are not required but point of care ultrasound training for peripheral line placement and exams are being developed to provide standard of care. Additionally, we work with the University of Maryland Physician Assistant Program to provide inpatient training to Physician Assistant students. We also have opportunities to engage in patient safety and quality improvement projects across the school of medicine and with the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Responsibilities and Duties
- Provide comprehensive inpatient and operative care on a high-volume, high-acuity adult cardiothoracic surgery service
- Independently manage patients across OR, ICU, stepdown, and telemetry floors
- Participate in all aspects of adult CT surgery patient care, excluding clinic-based duties
- Address all types of cases as required for the assignment and per client specifications
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in a tertiary/quaternary care environment
- Respond to consults, admit, and manage patients throughout their hospital course
- Take primary responsibility for timely and thorough documentation of all clinical activities
Additional Information
- Over 1 year of full-time experience as a Physician Assistant in adult cardiothoracic surgery required
- Independent inpatient management experience (not clinic-heavy or observational roles) is essential
- Active California PA license, current NCCPA certification, and DEA (schedule II-V) required
- Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) credential required
