Perform specific diagnostic and therapeutic practices and procedures in accordance with scope of practice.

Establish collaborative rapport with physician, nursing and others in order to promote and facilitate primary care services.

Teach patients and family member's healthy regimen and responsibility for achieving wellness.

Attend staff meetings to provide case discussion, continuing education, and continuous quality improvement.

Qualifications Must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in physician assistant studies from an accredited college or university certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

Must be National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) certified.

Have and maintain a valid, unrestricted and unencumbered license in one of the 50 states in the U.S.

or the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S.

University of Maryland Faculty Practice is looking for a Physician Assistant to work on our Downtown Campus to work with our already well-established hospitalist program composed of over 40 hospitalists where you will work side by side with our physicians as clinical colleagues. This position will include 12-hour day shifts with a rotating schedule of days on and off model with swing shifts (including weekends). Our group cares for general internal medicine patients, transplant patients, and medical consultations. The position requires our physician assistants to function as a primary admitter, rounder, consultant and discharger. Procedures are not required but point of care ultrasound training for peripheral line placement and exams are being developed to provide standard of care. Additionally, we work with the University of Maryland Physician Assistant Program to provide inpatient training to Physician Assistant students. We also have opportunities to engage in patient safety and quality improvement projects across the school of medicine and with the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Since 2016, Correctional Health Services (CHS) has been the direct provider of health care in the New York City jails. Deeply committed to human dignity and patient rights, CHS is part of the NYC Health + Hospitals system and is a key partner in the City’s efforts to reform the criminal-legal system. Our in-jail clinical services include medical, nursing, and mental health care; pharmacy services; substance-use treatment; social work; dental and vision care; discharge planning; and reentry support.

Given the high visibility of this initiative, we are seeking the highest caliber health care professionals in key clinical services to staff our Outposted Therapeutic Housing Units (OTxHU). To be located in three NYC Health + Hospital acute care facilities, the OTxHU is a pioneering approach to safely increasing access to high quality clinical care for patients in custody who have complicated health conditions. OTxHUs will bridge the gap in the continuum between care provided in the jails and inpatient hospitalization, with admission to and discharge from the OTxHU in accordance with a patient’s clinical needs. CHS will be the primary health care providers on these units and the NYC Department of Correction will provide security and custody management.

The OTxHU at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue in Manhattan will be the first of this unique, groundbreaking project to open with a planned completion date as early as the end of 2024. Through relationships in an interprofessional culture that supports all members of the healthcare team, the Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will demonstrate specialized skills in the care of patients and families undergoing operative and other invasive procedures. The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant coordinates involvement of medical/surgical specialty teams, practicing in a collaborative environment necessary to develop a comprehensive plan for the patient. Reviews the plan of care with the other members of the clinical team, participates in directing that care. The provider will work with the team to ensure adherence to protocol requirements and regulatory guidelines contributing to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and leadership to the organization and profession. They will perform diagnostic/therapeutic procedures; peri-procedural services, and coordinate discharge planning to next level of care (as applicable).

Preferred Experience: 2+ years NP experience or PA-C experience is preferred.Β  Acute Care training and/or cardiology experience also preferred.

Degree of Supervision
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician.

Basic Life Support (BLS).

Job Duties:

Provides direct care to patients through the following activities:


  • Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations


  • Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline



  • Performs the following therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill and proficiency as approved by the Clinical Division Chief



    • Arterial line placement


    • Central line placement


    • Pulmonary artery catheter placement


    • Chest tube removal


    • Temporary epicardial pacing wires removal


    • Epidural catheter removal


    • External pacemaker application


    • Direct current cardioversion


    • lumbar puncture


    • Bronchoscopy


    • Intubation


    • Paracentesis


    • Thoracentesis


    • Interosseous access





  • Initiates referrals to other health care providers, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician


  • Documents and bills for direct care provided


  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice


  • Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research


  • Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization


  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education


  • Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members

Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.Β
