Fleet Vehicle and Equipment assistant Service Manager

The Fleet Vehicle & Equipment Assistant Service Manager is responsible for skilled field and shop diagnostics, maintenance, and repair of engines, hydraulics, transmissions, and electrical systems powering heavy-duty equipment and company vehicles. This role supports the efficient operation, safety, and longevity of trucks, construction and maintenance machinery, light and medium-duty equipment, and small engines through preventive maintenance and emergency repair work.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain equipment in both field and shop environments to ensure operational readiness through routine and emergency repairs
• Maintain vehicles and equipment to the highest performance and safety standards; coordinate, negotiate, and schedule maintenance and repair services
• Perform preventive maintenance inspections to reduce downtime, identify major repair needs, diagnose defective components, and inspect new equipment
• Conduct preventive maintenance testing and troubleshooting of hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical systems; perform body modifications and mechanical repair work as needed
• Maintain and repair light, medium, and heavy equipment to maximize uptime during peak operational periods
• Repair and overhaul engines, cooling systems, HVAC systems, hydraulic and air systems, braking systems, drivetrains, and electrical monitoring systems on equipment including loaders, skid steers, backhoes, excavators, tractors, trucks, and small engines
• Fabricate or modify parts using appropriate welding and fabrication techniques, including arc and acetylene welding
• Monitor fleet maintenance schedules and maintain accurate service records using fleet management software and written documentation
• Research and evaluate new vehicles and equipment; provide recommendations for acquisitions, upgrades, and trade-ins, including gathering quotes for leadership review
• Maintain a clean, safe, and compliant shop environment in accordance with safety, insurance, and regulatory standards
• Document safety procedures annually and enforce proper use of safety equipment and best practices
• Assist in managing daily mechanic shop operations, including ordering parts and monitoring technician productivity
• Determine which repairs should be completed in-house versus outsourced and coordinate vendor relationships
• Maintain accurate fleet and equipment records within Samsara GPS or similar systems, coordinate installation and maintenance of GPS tracking equipment
• Assist with scheduling vehicle and equipment branding, inspections, and compliance requirements
• Communicate proactively with managers regarding maintenance schedules, operator concerns, and associated costs
• Train new drivers and operators on proper equipment use and maintenance in collaboration with department managers
• Develop strategies to reduce long-term repair and maintenance costs
• Monitor and enforce daily operator equipment checks and maintenance responsibilities
• Ensure vehicles and equipment meet DOT standards, documentation requirements, and cleanliness expectations
• Maintain compliance with all applicable vehicle laws and regulations

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Strong knowledge of heavy equipment diagnostics, repair techniques, and preventive maintenance for light, medium, and heavy equipment
• Proficiency with repair tools and rebuilding equipment used for maintenance, modification, and installation

8) Performs on-call emergency service as requested. All emergency after hours calls must be responded to immediately, and the service person on call must have the ability to arrive at the property no more than an hour after a call comes in.

9) Completes all service requests within 24 hours, unless the request requires extraordinary parts or labor.

10) Must have the ability to select appropriate materials for the property as needed.

11) Performs inspection of exterior lighting of the property on a schedule determined by the Community Manager.

12) Responsible for maintaining a clean and organized work environment in the maintenance shop.

13) Responds to resident service requests and concerns in a timely, professional manner.

14) Reads and/or listens to resident requests/complaints in a calm, respectful, and open manner.

15) Maintains a complete clean and neat uniform, name tag must be worn when working on any MLPG Property including nights and weekends, if applicable.

16) Distributes notices and communications to residents as needed.

17) Demonstrates customer service skills by treating residents, coworkers, supervisors, and vendors with respect, answering questions in a calm and open manner from coworkers and residents. The family travels frequently throughout the year. During approximately 6–8 weeks annually when the family is away, the candidate will still receive full guaranteed pay, even when services are not required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

• Independently troubleshoot, diagnose, rebuild, replace, and complete all required repairs on diesel equipment (i.e., tractors, trailers, bobtails, reefers, lift gates, etc.).

• Perform preventative maintenance within DOT standards.

• Mentor other maintenance shop personnel.

• Receive road calls, assign third party vendor, and work with business partners to triage appropriate plan of action including equipment swaps etc.

• Utilize fleet maintenance software system tablet to fully document equipment repair and parts used.

• Maintain a clean and safe work environment in compliance with workplace safety rules and regulations and government guidelines.

• Other duties as assigned by manager.

RELATIONSHIPS

• Internal: All Fleet Technicians, Drivers, Coordinators and Manager

• External: Dealer Service Managers

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Onsite: The associate in this role is expected to perform assigned responsibilities inside a US Foods maintenance facility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must have 5 years of verifiable hands-on experience as a heavy-duty commercial diesel mechanic.

• Diagnostic and troubleshooting ability using fleet maintenance software.

• Successfully demonstrated independent analytical and problem-solving skills.

• Must furnish own personal hand tools.

• Ability to comply with EPA and OSHA regulations pertaining to the shop and fleet.

• Ability to read and understand technical and service manuals.

• Excellent communication skills; able to communicate with co-workers and drivers with demonstrated teamwork skills.

• Ability to manage multiple functions simultaneously in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.

• Ability to adapt to changing organizational and operational needs.

• Computer and software experience.

EDUCATION

• High school diploma or equivalent required.

CERTIFICATIONS/TRAINING

• Brake certification

LICENSES

• Must possess a valid driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• JPRO software experience.

• Welding ability

• Knowledge with electrical schematics

• Basic Microsoft Excel and Word skills.

• Leadership experience or qualifications

• Valid Class A CDL license and DOT certification

• EPA 608 (Type 2 or Universal) certification

Compensation depends on relevant experience and/or education, specific skills, function, geographic location, and other factors as applicable by law.  The expected base rate for this role is $39 per hour.

This role will also receive overtime compensation
