Position Summary
The Van/Bus Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of RCT vehicles and for providing reliable, high-quality transportation customer service to RCT passengers.
Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties and responsibilities reflect the essential functions of the position, but do not restrict the assignment of additional or different tasks; changes to the duties and responsibilities may be made at management's discretion. - Provide safe, efficient, on-schedule transportation for passengers in Agency vehicles.
- Provide courteous, respectful customer service to passengers at all times.
- Maintain passenger/client confidentiality at all times.
- Provide assistance to passengers as trained and according to procedure in boarding and exiting vehicles, using the wheelchair lift, as necessary.
- Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections of vehicles; wash, maintain, refuel and secure Agency vehicles as required to ensure vehicles are clean, safe and ready for use at all times.
- Promptly report mechanical failures, safety concerns and/or maintenance issues to the Operations Manager or other designated staff.
- Learn, follow and implement safety and industry-related rules, regulations, and procedures as required.
- Be aware of and follow all traffic laws and industry driving best practices.
- Respond to emergencies, accidents and other incidents according to established policies and protocols.
- Complete all pre- and post-trip inspection reports, transportation manifests, daily mileage logs, and other paperwork and reports as required or requested.
- Maintain a professional appearance at all times while working, with good personal hygiene and grooming.
- Complete all trainings as required and/or requested by management.
- Perform other duties as required to meet department and agency needs.
Education and Experience
Required: Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the job.
Preferred: High School completion or equivalent and commercial driving experience (minimum 2 years' driving experience required).

Working Conditions and Schedule
This position requires actively physical and sedentary activity in a variety of environments, including vehicles and a professional office environment, and exposure to all types of weather conditions, including inclement conditions. Driving in inclement weather conditions and occasional periods of work outdoors in inclement weather conditions will be required.
This position may require working in potentially stress-inducing situations and may require working with passengers who present challenging behaviors. Medical and other emergencies involving passengers or employees may occur during working hours; employees will be required to contact emergency services for assistance with these events as necessary and to alert their supervisor of such events as soon as possible.
Exposure to blood and/or body fluids may occur; in case of exposure, universal precautions and protective equipment/measures will be required.
Regular, consistent and predictable attendance according to scheduled work hours/week is required. Weekend and extended hours may be required as necessary to meet operational needs. This position will provide route coverage at all RCT locations, as needed.
Physical and Other Requirements
- Must be free of the influence of medication or other substances which could significantly decrease alertness or impair reaction time at all times while performing, ready to perform, or immediately available to perform safety-sensitive functions.
- Must meet FTA requirements pertaining to substance use and related testing for covered employees performing safety-sensitive functions.
- Must meet all background check requirements as mandated by funding source(s) and Agency policies.
- Must comply with safety procedures and protocols, employ industry best practices for driving, and obey traffic laws at all times.
- Constantly required to see, speak, and hear to safely operate vehicle and effectively communicate with passengers.
- Visual acuity to read text in various formats and from varying distances (such as written instructions and road signs).
- Frequent, repetitive use of hands, wrists, arms, shoulders and back, as well as legs and feet.

Hours vary widely due to the variety of route lengths. Morning hours range from 6:00 A.M. to 9:00 A.M. Afternoon hours range from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. New drivers are assigned as substitute drivers and may apply for contract route openings as they occur. Opportunities also exist to work as a substitute route driver or an extracurricular trip driver. These positions offer flexibility and can easily work with changing schedules and commitments.
If selected, applicants will be entered into a training program that includes behind-the-wheel training and classroom instruction. Bus driver trainees will be paid $15.89 per hour for up to 30 hours of driver trainings. After completion of training, applicants are entered into a paid mentoring program.
The starting wage for substitute drivers is $21.67 per hour. Anyone that drives both an A.M. and P.M. shift within the same day is paid $26.67 per hour (this includes $5.00 per hour as a split shift differential). A weekly compensation of $25.00 will be paid to contracted employees who work 20 hours or more a week and are present during all assigned route hours with zero absences.

Position Description
Schedule: Year-round, Monday-Friday with both an AM route and PM extended day drop off; field trips as necessary.
Reporting to the Transportation Supervisor, our bus drivers are non-exempt, full-time employees, typically working from August through May with the potential to extend through the summer months based on summer school needs. AM route times and a late afternoon/early evening, extended day drop off. The bus driver operates a bus and transports passengers safely and efficiently to their destination.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Safely operate the bus, ensuring the safety of passengers, pedestrians, and other road users; includes following traffic laws, maintaining control of the vehicle, and being aware of potential hazards on the road
- Pick up passengers at designated stops or locations and transport them to their destinations; ensure that passengers board and exit the bus safely and provide assistance to passengers with disabilities or special needs
- Adhere to predetermined schedules, making sure to arrive and depart from stops on time; adjust driving speed or take alternative routes to maintain the schedule in case of traffic congestion or road closures
- Responsible for maintaining cleanliness and orderliness inside the bus; ensure that the bus is clean and free from hazards before starting each shift; inspect the bus for mechanical issues and report any maintenance or repair needs
- Comply with all applicable regulations and procedures related to driving a commercial vehicle; includes obtaining the necessary licenses and certifications, adhering to traffic laws, and following school policies
- Maintain records related to driving activities, such as mileage, fuel consumption, and passenger counts; keep track of incidents, accidents, or any other notable occurrences
- In case of emergencies, such as accidents or breakdowns, bus drivers are responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of passengers; may involve evacuating passengers, contacting emergency services, or providing first aid when necessary

Training: Initial six-hour pre-service, paid; ongoing general and target-specific skills as required may be required.
Base Payrate: $16.00/hour.

Valid Oklahoma Drivers License/Class B CDL with school bus and air brake endorsement
Acceptable motor vehicle record
Physically capable of performing prescribed duties

Communicate and confer frequently with the Assist. Superintendent. of Maintenance & Transportation
Comply with relevant laws and procedures for the storage, use and disposal of chemicals, trash, rubbish, waste and blood borne contaminated items
Drive a school bus, maintaining a time and safety schedule
Interact positively with children, parents, teachers, etc
Maintain accurate records; mileage, load and time records as required
Inspect school bus, notifying bus mechanic of any mechanical problem
Observe all state and federal traffic safety laws
Observe all regulations prescribed in the CPS Transportation Handbook
Maintain proper discipline of passengers on bus
Keeps bus clean, including sweeping floors and washing windows
Provides special care and assistance as appropriate if passengers are handicapped
Controls loading and unloading of bus at designated stops to insure safety of passengers
Report all accidents and complete required reports
Comply with federal and district drug/alcohol testing regulations
Respect the privacy of confidential matters relative to students, patrons and personnel
Use good judgment at all times
Comply with all items contained in the district's Hazard Communication Program
Attend quarterly safety meetings as scheduled by the district safety coordinator
Perform other duties that may be necessary to achieve job purpose, or that may be assigned
Attend approved professional development activities that may improve professional competence or enhance the job purpose.

Qualifications
Requirements Include:
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (no CDL needed to start).
- Must have held a driver's license for at least 3 years (5 years if applying in Tennessee).
- Minimum age: 21 (25 in Tennessee). If you've held a DOT-regulated driving role in the past 3 years, we must be able to verify that employment per DOT guidelines.
- Pass DOT drug screen, physical, and background check
- Compliance with DOT regulations (marijuana prohibited, even for medical use)
