Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) is seeking Surgical Tech Externs, Surgical Techs, and First Assists to join our Surgery Procedures-General unit. Ideal candidates are patient focused, mission driven caregivers looking for an opportunity to apply clinical knowledge in a fast-paced environment.

Assists surgical team members in providing intraoperative care to the perioperative patient by preparing and monitoring equipment, passing instruments, maintaining the sterile field, assisting with patient transfer/positioning and performing a variety of surgical skills and procedures.

Position Specifics:

- Opening January 2026: Brand new, state of the art Operating Rooms!
- Surgical Tech Externs, Surgical Techs and First Assists
- Department: Surgery
- Core Function: Surgical Tech
- Schedule: Full-Time Days (40 hours per week). On call/weekend rotation, currently on a 5-day rotation (so every 5th day you would be on call at the time the shift ends or if it’s a weekend day it would be for 24hrs). Buddy call would start midway through orientation and then independent responsibilities would start once off orientation
- Facility: St Mary’s Hospital
- Clinic Location: Decatur, IL
- Sign-On Bonus: $20,000 for Full-Time Surgical Techs and First Assists
- Compensation that aligns with experience. Shift differentials for night and weekend on top of base rate as well as call pay!

Education Qualifications

- High School Diploma or GED is required.
- Associates degree in surgical technology is preferred.
- Graduate from a recognized surgical technology program or has successfully completed military training in surgical technology is required.
- Military documentation to establish education includes a DD214 demonstrating graduation from a military training program.
- Illinois: High School Diploma or GED PLUS 3 years working as a Surgical Technologist working in healthcare setting may be considered in lieu of education.

Experience Qualifications

- 1 year surgery experience is preferred.

Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

- One of the following certifications is required: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) issued by National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) OR Tech in Surgery (TS-C) issued by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) is required.

Job Summary and Qualifications 


Our Surgical Service teams are a committed, caring group of colleagues. We have a passion for creating positive patient interactions. We offer a vast array of robotic surgical technology including gynecology, general, thoracic, urology, spine and joint replacement. Services offered at Summit include Gynecology, urology, neurology, spine, orthopedics, general, ENT, plastics and vascular. As a Surgical Tech you will work directly with the surgeon in the operating room. You may scrub and assist the physician during procedures. Your responsibilities and tasks may include: 


  • Communicating the surgeon’s preferences and specific patient needs to surgical team 


  • Positioning the patient to provide the necessary exposure for the procedure, as well as the surgeon preference 


  • Providing intraoperative skills such as visualization, trocar insertion, hemostasis, tissue handling, placement and securing of wound drains 


  • Having knowledge of and using all open, laparoscopic, and robotic equipment necessary for a procedure 


  • Proficiency in technical skills required during a surgical procedure, including, but not limited to: clamping, cauterizing, suturing, inserting, manipulating, retracting, cutting, and ligating tissue as necessary 


  • Utilizing appropriate suturing techniques, according to surgeon preference, to close the incision at the end of the procedure 


  • Providing postoperative skills in patient care such as applying dressings to surgical wounds, patient transfer and transport, transfer of care, and monitoring for immediate complications

What qualifications you will need:

Major Tasks, Responsibilities, and Key Accountabilities

  • Processes member purchases in a fast, courteous, and friendly manner by pulling merchandise from a pick list. Utilizes a handheld scanner device (RF) device to pick orders from the sales floor. Uses handheld scanner device (RF) to verify merchandise. Moves merchandise from sales floor to staging area.
  • Communicates problems with inventory and/or equipment and communicates expired or short-dated items included on pick list.
  • Communicates with club team when merchandise needs to be replenished.
  • Works with team to have merchandise pulled from reserve area, when possible, to avoid sales floor replenishment.
  • Ensures all orders are picked in a timely manner to meet all productivity requirements.
  • Works with a high level of urgency to ensure deadlines are met up to and including key performance indicators based on individual performance.
  • Follows operational efficiencies, processes and productivity standards with adherence to established SOP for BOPIC, Curbside and Ship from Club.
  • Takes responsibility for individual performance and works with club leadership on individual performance when metrics are not met.
  • Securely packages the order in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Ensures the SFC area is neat, clean, and organized. Performs general housekeeping duties, including removing trash and cardboard from the work area. Handles damaged goods and spoiled products in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Processes returns to the club and makes determination on how to handle (via DDR or Membership desk)
  • Maintains all club policies and procedures. Including adhering to proper dress code standards.
  • Required to meet OMNI productivity expectations regarding service level agreements (SLA\"s), performance metrics and goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including working in other departments as needed.
  • Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of this job.

Qualifications

  • Previous order pulling experience preferred.
  • Big box/wholesale retail experience preferred.
  • Previous RF scanner experience preferred.

Job Conditions

  • Most of the time is spent moving about continuously on hard surfaces. There may be a need to frequently position oneself to examine and/or scan merchandise, including bending, climbing, crawling, handling, pulling, reaching, and stooping.
  • Continuously requires lifting objects up to 30 pounds. May require lifting and moving heavy and/or awkward objects more than 30 pounds with assistance.
  • Usually in a comfortable environment surrounded by moving machinery and/or loud equipment. There may be exposure to temperature extremes at time to pull refrigerated orders.

  • The children served in Child First range in age from prenatal up to 6 years of age.
  • The Center for Youth and Families supports clinicians work by providing, weekly individual and team clinical supervision, weekly clinical group supervision to review cases and interact with colleagues, professional development opportunities that include training in the Child First model, Child-Parent Psychotherapy, and additional clinical topics, committed focus on employee wellbeing, work-life balance, and professional growth, and regular engagement with Department Medical Director & Administrator.
  • The Child First Clinician engages with families and the Child First Care Coordinator in the collaborative assessment process.
  • The clinician uses all available information to develop a thoughtful, well-integrated clinical formulation and Child and Family Plan of Care in partnership with the Care Coordinator and family.
  • Provides Child First home-based psychotherapeutic intervention with young children and their caregivers using relational, dyadic psychotherapy (CPP) and other modalities.

You will work closely with the Maintenance Supervisor and will be responsible for completing make readies and light work orders and other required tasks.
