Position overview

Position title:
Instructor (Non-Senate, Non-Tenure Track)

Salary range:
A reasonable estimate for this position is $4,000 to $6,000 per course. Instructor compensation is determined by course length, number of units, enrollment, budgetary considerations, and other factors.

Percent time:
Part-time temporary appointments are offered by agreement on a course-by-course basis.

Anticipated start:
Classes are expected to begin in August for the fall term and January for the spring term.

Review timeline:
Applications are typically reviewed for fall course needs in April - June, and for spring course needs in August - October. Applicants are considered for positions as needs arise; the existence of this pool does not guarantee that a position is available.

Position duration:
Position duration is dependent upon the length of each course. Appointments are renewable based on need, funding, and performance.

Position description

UC Berkeley Extension, the professional and continuing education division at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a pool of qualified instructors to teach in-person professional post-baccalaureate courses for our Business, Data, and Innovation Visiting Student Programs. All courses are offered weekdays in-person on the UC Berkeley campus with some online instructional components. The pool will remain in place for nine months; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond the advertised final closing date must reapply. The number of these positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the department.

Instructor duties include but are not limited to:




  • Complete mandatory training programs by deadlines established by UC Berkeley.
  • Complete required administrative tasks in a timely manner including: updating and submitting syllabi using approved syllabus template; communicating required texts and materials; communicating classroom technology and support needs, etc.
  • Make appropriate adjustments to continually improve the syllabus, curriculum and course materials. May be based upon programmatic and/or student feedback.
  • Prepare and deliver course materials, lectures/presentations, and design learning assessments.
  • Design interactive and motivational classroom activities to fully engage participants and to reinforce student learning.
  • Stay current within the subject, discipline or field of practice.
  • Use subject-matter expertise and leverage additional resources appropriately to enhance the curriculum.
  • Utilize course support platforms, including the Canvas Learning Management System and Zoom Pro (as applicable).
  • Communicate teaching objectives and specific learning outcomes to students, and clearly outline/explain the grading policies for the course.
  • Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner.
  • Employ culturally competent and other relevant teaching methodologies in the classroom, including teaching non-native speakers and/or students with academic letters of accommodations for disabilities.
  • Evaluate student achievement of specific learning outcomes and assign grades.
  • Post final student grades to the transcript system within two weeks of course completion.
  • Handle student inquiries about final grades and consult with Program Director/Manager as needed.
  • Retain student records according to University policies.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree)


Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

  • 3 or more years of professional industry work experience since degree, or 3 or more years of teaching experience since degree.
  • All work must be performed in the United States, whether in person or online.
  • For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. Due to the part-time, temporary nature of instructor positions, UC Berkeley Extension is unable to provide US visa/work permits for this position.


Preferred qualifications

  • Advanced degree in subject area preferred.
  • 5 or more years of professional industry work experience in course subject since degree.
  • 5 or more years of teaching, training, mentoring, or coaching experience in course subject, within a U.S. corporate environment or at a U.S. college/university institution.
  • Knowledge of federal and California state laws and regulations as applicable to the course subject.
  • Experience in creating syllabi, learning objectives, lectures/presentations, learning activities, assignments, assessments, exams, and quizzes.
  • Experience teaching and/or developing academic content for online courses.
  • Ability to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information.
  • Effective verbal/written communication and presentation skills (English).
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues and work within a team environment.
  • Proficiency in (or willingness to learn) instructional and other technology, such as: Learning Management Systems (Canvas); lecture/presentation capture applications (Panopto); online video conferencing (Zoom); Microsoft Office (Word and PowerPoint); file sharing (Google drive or Dropbox); and Google Workspace tools (email, calendar, docs, sheets, slides, etc).

Position description

The School of Journalism is recruiting for a Director of Special Academic Programs (Academic Coordinator I). This position will be responsible for coordinating the School's summer undergraduate minor, overseeing the undergraduate program overall, helping with coordination of the California Newsroom Fellowship program, and managing other special academic programs.



50% of this position will be dedicated to managing the Undergraduate Minor. The Director (AC) will work with the Undergraduate Advisor and Journalism Staff to manage the undergraduate minor program over Summer 2026 and Summer 2027. The AC will manage all of the academic administration for the program, which includes: working with the Associate Dean to review applicants and participate in interviews; helping to manage Academic Student Employees (ASEs); working with Summer Sessions to advertise classes and participate in workshops or other trainings; leading orientation and training for summer lecturers; and assisting summer lecturers with a variety of academic matters, including curriculum planning, evaluating exceptional student requests, training instructors on the Learning Management Software (known as bCourses), handling classroom incidents or referring to the appropriate campus departments, facilitating incomplete grades resolution, facilitating grade appeals process including informal resolution, and assisting with DSP exam proctoring.



Duties include but are not limited to the following:



Program Administration & Student Management:




  • Oversee the day-to-day management of the minor, including student enrollment, scholarship arrangements, and information dissemination.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for curriculum planning, working with the executive and curriculum committees to ensure core and elective course availability.
  • Lead program promotion, managing communications, and maintaining the website.


Summer Session Management:




  • Serve as the key lead for Summer Sessions, managing hiring, class coordination, and reporting.
  • Collaborate closely with the Undergraduate Advisor, Journalism staff, AP Analyst, and Student Services team to meet hiring deadlines for instructors and Academic Student Employees (ASE).
  • The AC will work through August 30, 2027 to see the completion of summer session appointments and help instructors with final grade submissions & final offboarding.


Expansion & Access:




  • Drive significant expansion of enrollment for the minor.
  • Explore establishing the minor as a system-wide offering accessible to other UC students.
  • Develop a professional pipeline, including pre-college course offerings for high school students.
  • Work to establish a 4+1 BA/MJ degree to facilitate access to graduate-level Journalism education.
  • Explore expanding the minor into a full undergraduate major.
  • Curriculum & Content: Act as a crucial thought partner to continuously update the curriculum, ensuring it reflects new technologies and political realities within the rapidly evolving journalism industry.


Faculty Engagement:




  • Help maintain and increase engagement with the teaching faculty, including Berkeley Senate professors and journalists from top newsrooms.


25% of this position will be dedicated to supporting the California News Fellowship program. The AC will have a central role in the Fellowship Program and its integration with the wider curriculum. Responsibilities include managing the admissions and selection process, such as reviewing applications and participating in the selection of each new cohort. The AC will also review the annual operations handbook to identify development opportunities. Crucially, the AC acts as a system overseer for the fellowship, bridging training opportunities with the graduate curriculum. The AC will be a key thought partner and leader in creating a partnership between the fellowship and the undergraduate minor program, exploring collaborations like joint projects and developing shared training opportunities.



25% of this position will be dedicated to managing the School's other special academic programs which includes the Business Journalism Certificate Program, and the Masters of Journalism/Masters Public Health. The AC would take ownership of these programs and would manage the coordination of all of our special graduate programs as needed across the curriculum.



Possibility of reappointment may be considered based on performance and need of the School.

  • Provide guidance and recommendations to medical teams with case support on usage of organ preservation devices and associated applications on an independent, case-by-case basis in matters of time-critical transplant situations in order to gain incremental business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the senior point of contact for enterprise clients, ensuring clear communication, strong stakeholder confidence, and a consistent, high quality experience throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of each client's business priorities, industry environment, and organizational structure to inform tailored project and program strategies.
  • Lead client meetings, strategic discussions, and project reviews with professionalism, clarity, and a consultative approach.
  • Proactively identify client needs and project risks, recommending effective solutions to maintain alignment, mitigate issues, and support successful outcomes.
  • Set and manage expectations related to scope, timelines, feasibility, sampling plans, fieldwork milestones, deliverables, and operational considerations.
  • Cultivate long term, trust based relationships that position Forsta as a strategic partner and an extension of the client's internal team.
  • Guide clients through complex, multi phase or multi country programs, providing direction on best practices, operational workflows, and project requirements.
  • Promote and drive adoption of Forsta tools, platforms, and recommended processes to enhance project efficiency, consistency, and data quality.
  • Oversee the full lifecycle of high complexity research projects-from initial scoping and kickoff through execution, quality assurance, fieldwork oversight, delivery, and closeout.
  • Ensure strong internal alignment by coordinating cross functional teams, communicating requirements and risks, and contributing to account growth through outstanding service delivery.
  • Ensure all project activities adhere to Forsta's quality standards, compliance requirements, and operational best practices to maintain consistency and excellence across engagements.
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and timely project documentation-including scopes, timelines, status updates, and post project summaries-to support transparency and organizational alignment.
  • Support long term account health by identifying patterns, insights, and operational improvements that enhance the client experience and strengthen Forsta's strategic value.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of Project Management experience, including 4+ years in Market Research or Research Insights, with a proven ability to lead large, complex, or enterprise level programs.
  • Demonstrated success building and sustaining consultative, trust based client relationships, serving as the primary client lead for multi phase or multi country initiatives.
  • Strong command of survey operations and fieldwork workflows, with familiarity in research methodology, sampling logic, and data interpretation concepts (preferred but not required).
  • Hands on experience with survey platforms, including Forsta Surveys (Decipher), and the ability to guide clients and internal teams in platform usage and best practices.
  • Exceptional communication and executive level presentation skills, with the ability to simplify complex topics for diverse audiences and influence decision making.
  • Advanced technical proficiency, including strong MS Office fluency (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), and comfort working with tools such as Salesforce, Jira, Teamwork, and Slack.
  • Strong commercial and financial acumen, including experience supporting account growth, building budgets, forecasting, and managing project margins.

The expected base salary for this position ranges from $54,000 to $68,000 .It is not typical for offers to be made at or near the top of the range. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, licensure or certificationsobtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. In addition tobasesalary and a competitive benefits package, successful candidates are eligible to receive a discretionary bonus or commission tied toachievedresults.
