Overview Come work with a great team! Signet Health manages the behavioral health services for Medstar Washington Hospital Center and has a Full-time day shift Unit Clerk opening.

This person performs a variety of administrative duties for the inpatient nursing unit/department.

This person ensures the timely, efficient and organized flow of operations for the assigned nursing station/area.

Incumbents in this position may perform all, or a combination of, the duties described depending upon their assigned work area and the specific needs of the department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Greets patients, visitors and/or physicians and provides appropriate assistance.

Answers incoming telephone calls to the unit, including STATS, relaying information as appropriate.

Responds to or relays patient requests to the nurse.

Enters/updates physician orders and unit charges into the computer, e.g.

laboratory tests, dietary orders, physical therapy, supplies/treatment utilized, as needed.

Initiates and completes administrative functions regarding the admission, discharge and transfer of patients.

Faxes/submits physician’s orders to the Pharmacy.

Completes and ensures delivery of unit census, patient acuity summary, etc.

Files laboratory, x-ray reports, progress reports, etc., in the appropriate patient medical chart.

Contacts other hospital departments and/or staff to schedule patient’s diagnostic/therapeutic appointments, and/or requests assistance with ancillary tasks.

Assists in maintaining unit supplies/equipment by monitoring inventory levels, ordering supplies, as instructed and completes appropriate logs.

Provides shift report to on-coming Unit Clerk or nursing staff, as needed.

Maintains a clean, organized and efficient work station.

Assists with the orientation/training of new employees to the unit, as directed.

Maintains daily census/nursing assignment boards.

Posts and updates monthly assignment boards for physicians and residents.

Captures and maintains statistical data on utilization payor mix, census, average length of stay and other critical elements.

Other duties as assigned.

Requirements/Qualifications Candidates should have a minimum of 1-2 years experience in working with patients with psychiatric/behavioral health disorders.

Must be flexible to adjust to the needs of a fast-paced environment, demonstrate effective problem solving skills and display excellent oral/written communication skills.

Previous adult behavioral health and substance use treatment experience is preferred.

High School degree is required and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Healthcare or similar field is strongly preferred.

Primary Duties:

- Documents and charges for patient care activities painting a clear picture of the patient's course of care under supervision of licensed physical therapist according to the state's requirement. Documents ongoing communication with the physical therapist.

- Demonstrates effective time management and meets productivity expectations. Manage an accurate schedule. Demonstrates a professional commitment to provide frictionless patient access to care through flexibility, adaptability, creativity, and actions/behaviors that display empathy in our patient consumer driven environment Arranges schedule for re-evaluations and discharge summaries to be done by a physical therapist.

- Completes appropriate discharge planning, follow-up care, and determination of equipment needs in collaboration with supervising physical therapist. Demonstrates initiative in contributing innovative ideas for patient treatment. Involves patient and family as appropriate in treatment and discharge planning through education and training. Provides patient treatment services including review of pertinent historical information, safely administering modalities, and providing interventions within the treatment plan's limits under supervision of licensed physical therapist. Collaborates interventions with other team members toward an interdisciplinary approach where appropriate.

- Recognizes and documents changes/response in patient's condition and contributes to modification of the treatment plan in collaboration with, and under the supervision of, a licensed physical therapist. Provides verbal/written reports as appropriate for patient progress conferences where applicable.

- Takes initiative in pursuing and directing continuing education for professional growth and competency for self and organization. Serves as a clinical instructor to assigned students as appropriate.

Qualifications:

- Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapy Assistant school.

- Associate degree as a Physical Therapist Assistant.

- Maryland, District of Columbia (DC), and/or Virginia licensure required as deemed necessary for your specific location(s).

- American Heart Association’s BLS (Basic Life Support) for Healthcare Providers CPR (Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation) certification.

Position Summary

The Sleep Technologist II is responsible for providing high-quality patient care while performing comprehensive polysomnographic testing, analysis, and associated interventions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Polysomnographic Testing Procedures

- Train junior technologists when necessary.
- Make beds and ensure the cleanliness of the facility
- Review the information in patient paperwork to include sleep/wake complaints and order for study.
- Greet the patient upon arrival and escort him/her to the sleep room. Educate patient and family concerning overnight/morning procedures, answering any questions. Interview the patient to obtain information needed for the completion of pre-test paperwork.
- Set up and calibrate monitoring equipment, selecting the appropriate recording montage.
- Apply electrodes and other recording devices to the patient and verify proper function.
- Perform pre-test calibrations, making any necessary adjustments to equipment.
- Institute “lights out” and document patient data.
- Monitor the polysomnogram, obtaining a high-quality recording.
- Recognize and document clinical and physiological events pertinent to the study.
- Communicate information on patient status to the medical director as needed.
- Recognize and document all artifacts and equipment malfunctions, taking the proper steps to eliminate them. Report any equipment malfunctions to the direct supervisor.
- Call the sleep center manager or 24-hour technical support line for assistance as needed.
- Assist the patient with needs during the procedure in order to obtain the required sleep/wake data.
- Understand indications, contraindications, and adverse effects of continuous and bilevel-positive airway pressure as well as oxygen administration.
- Apply and titrate positive airway pressure and oxygen therapy based on physician order and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Wake the patient and record post-test calibrations.
- Gently remove all electrodes and transducers from the patient and allow time for clean up.
- Have the patient complete the post-test paperwork before discharge.
- Strip beds and leave room in appropriate condition for housekeeping.
- Copy and upload all required data for the scoring technologist.
- Inventory and order equipment/supplies per policy.

Patient and Equipment Safety

- Recognize and respond appropriately and quickly to patient physiologic events.
- Safely lift/move patients and equipment, using proper body mechanics.
- Ensure the safety and welfare of all patients, including those with special needs.
- Check the availability and function of emergency equipment.
- Comply with Universal Precautions at all times.
- Properly disinfect/sterilize equipment, electrodes, and transducers.
- Appropriately handle all hazardous materials.

Complex Procedures

- Conduct Multiple Sleep Latency and Maintenance of Wakefulness testing.
- Conduct testing of patients with disabilities and other special needs.
- Conduct advanced monitoring procedures when required by the Medical Director.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

- Must have a high school diploma and additional education in an AMA-approved health-related program.

Licensure

- Proof of RPSGT credentialing by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists.
- Must meet requirements prescribed by the American Association of Sleep Technologists (AAST) to maintain RPSGT credential.
- Current and valid CPR certification.

Experience

- A minimum of 1 year of medical-related experience along with additional education in an AMA-approved health-related program
- Prior experience as a sleep technologist, EEG technologist, respiratory care practitioner, or nurse.

Physical Requirements

- Stand, walk, bend, and reach above the shoulder for long periods of time in a clinical setting.
- Must be able to occasionally lift or carry and frequently push or pull up to 100 lbs. as part of the role
- Regularly exposed to healthcare settings that may require personal protective equipment
- Requires manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, calculator, copier machine, and other equipment
