- To authorize and supervise dispensing of daily narcotic replacement therapy and other medication by medical staff in the Medical Director?s absence.
- Consistently monitoring patient dosages in conjunction with the Program Physician/Medical Director, Treatment Center Director, Counselors and Dosing Nurses.

Distinguishing Features of the Class: Under supervision of attending physician(s) and in accordance with New York State laws and Hospital Board regulations, an incumbent in this class provides medical and surgical care in the division of Cardiothoracic Surgery of Westchester Medical Center. General responsibilities include examining patients, formulating diagnoses and developing a treatment plan for patients, performing technical, clinical and surgical procedures, documenting patient progress and surgical care. In addition, an incumbent in this classification will perform saphenous vein harvests, place and remove chest tubes and catheters, intubate and extubate patients and place and remove central lines and arterial lines. A registered Physician Assistant may write prescriptions and medical orders, however, if employed at Westchester Medical Center, prescriptions must be counter-signed by an attending physician within 24 hours. Does related work as required. JOB SUMMARY
The Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner is responsible for assisting physicians in conducting hospital rounds, as well as seeing patients independently for office visits. - ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Works in collaboration with physicians and other health care providers to provide health care across the continuum of care to assigned patients.
- Performs hospital rounds of new consults and follow-up patients and assists in discharge of patients.
- Obtains patient medical, physical and psycho-social history and performs comprehensive health assessment including physical exam, based on age and history.
- Conducts non-invasive preventive screening procedures based on age and history.
- Identifies medical and health risks and needs. Updates and records changes in health status in EMR.
- Formulates the appropriate differential diagnosis based on history, physical examination and clinical findings.
- Orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic tests and laboratory studies within protocol guidelines.
- Develops and provides a relevant patient education plan.
- Prescribes and administers appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies.
- Participates in assisting and performing common minor urological procedures.
- Makes appropriate referrals to other health professionals and community agencies.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner Program; NYS licensed
