Job Description

Position Summary:

The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer utilizes high frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques for medical diagnosis in various regions of the body.

Education, License & Cert:

High school with additional skills training (certification) required. Certification Required: RDMS (preferred) or ARRT with specialized certification in Sonography required, cannot be certification eligible.

Experience:

Minimum of three months (RDMS).

Essential Functions:

  • Performs the scanning examination requested by the referring physician, modifying the examination, depending upon on the findings demonstrated, and review the examination with the supervising Radiologist if necessary.
  • Assists the Radiologist or the clinician in special procedures such as percutaneous fluid aspiration or biopsy procedures when performed in the department or in Interventional Radiology.
  • Performs routine equipment checks for resolution and other quality control procedures, as necessary.
  • Must be able to react quickly to emergency situations such as patient fainting, patient being unsteady while getting on to scanning table, if unsafe situation occurs (such as a fire), getting patient to safety and sounding alarm.
  • Ability to work alone on shift or on call and perform the job done with confidence in your abilities and in an efficient manner.
  • Must be able to lift, push, reach, bend, stop and walk in order to care for patients. Must be able to perform a stand‐pivot transfer with a patient.
  • Must be able to maintain composure during procedures or exams with potential colostomy or draining wounds, as well as working with patients with various conditions such as Hepatitis, Meningitis or those with isolation precautions.

Other Duties:

  • Verifies images and reports of exam and sends to PACS.
  • Maintains an inventory of coupling agent, drugs and other supplies and requisitions and materials, as needed.
  • Obtains sterile instruments, as needed, and returns them to central supply for sterilization and storage.
  • Teaches ultrasound technique to student technologists and completes appropriate paperwork.
  • Demonstrates willingness to accept non‐routine work assignments, as appropriate.
  • Must be able to work a variety of shifts and be in the call rotation on a scheduled basis, along with on evenings/overnights and weekends. Hospital observed holidays are not required to be covered by Per Diem Ultrasound Technologists, however they may volunteer to cover if desired.
  • Able to be on call and in the department within 45 minutes after being called for a procedure.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for a prolonged period of time in performing the ordered examination (usually 30‐60 minutes for each patient).
  • Performs high level disinfection process according to policy/procedures.

  • Perform daily checks on mammography unit. Perform other mammography QC as required: phantom checks, compression checks, repeat analysis, daily, quarterly and yearly QC as needed, etc. Perform Epic mammography module duties as needed. Assist with MQSA requirements with patient lay letters.
  • Be able to explain all mammography procedures to patients including routine mammography, spot compression views, magnification, wire localizations, stereotactic biopsies, ultrasound of the breast, galactograms, etc. Be knowledgeable in BSE (breast self-examination) to teach and explain the importance to patients and answer questions or concerns
  • Must be knowledgeable in special views and special procedures such as wire localizations, stereotactic and galactograms. Assist the radiologist in special procedures
  • Practice principles of radiation protection. Minimize the radiation exposure to the patient, yourself, co-workers, etc. at all times
  • Properly clean detector and compression paddle between patients

BMD

  • Operate bone densitometer to perform osteoporosis evaluation
  • Perform daily quality control tests on Bone Densitometer unit and document. If unit out of range perform a 2nd test. If values remain out of range do not perform patients. Contact service engineer
  • Perform weight and height measurements on patient prior to exam.
  • Review patient history and document on history sheet. Determine patient has not taken calcium tablet today.
  • Position and instruct patients for various portions of the body to be evaluated by BMD unit for osteoporosis testing
  • Analyze BMD study and print reports. Be sure study is archived. QC study in PACS prior to ending exam in Epic
  • Properly clean BMD unit between patients
  • If patient being held for study document in patient holding log

CT

  • Perform daily QC and warm up of CT unit prior to patient care. Initiate the scanning procedure at the proper anatomical level
  • Checks prescription/request, provisional diagnosis, hospital chart and patient identification
  • Explains the procedure to the patient, means of communication during scan and procedure to follow, if emergency arises during scanning procedure
  • Advises the patient of the possibility and/or necessity of an intravenous contrast injection and the precautions or contra indications involved with such an injection. Informs ER doctor of CT injection prior to injection
  • Prepares room and equipment according to anatomical area to be scanned, per request and history. Change to appropriate gantry wedges, select kilovoltage and proper detector levels
  • Selects correct computer program and initiate scan maintaining visual and/or audible communication with the patient during the scanning procedure
  • Operates laser imaging cameras, selecting appropriate picture format and processes these in the C.T. section

Summary
Optician Apprentice position is an on-the-job training program in which the employee will successfully complete a 2 year (24 month) New York State Ophthalmic Dispensing program including 1200 clock hours in fitting and adjusting ophthalmic eyewear, 600 clock hours in the verification and interpretation of prescriptions, and at least 600 clock hours in other aspects of practice and theory of dispensing such as neutralization and lens identification.
Position will perform duties of optician assistant under the supervision of New York Licensed Opticians and Optical Supervisor including the design and dispense of ophthalmic products, assisting in optical inventory management and ordering of optical products. Employees will perform day to day optical office duties including utilization of Epic medical record, phones messages, and interactions with providers, colleagues and patients. Previous employment in optical, optometry or ophthalmology.
Education

2. Performs physical measurements for fitting of eyewear; accurately records information required and guides patient’s selection of appropriate eyewear.

4. Maintains thorough knowledge of all products and services promoted or associated to realm of expertise espoused by office.

7. Assists in care and upkeep of department equipment and supplies – maintains a clean, well-organized work area.
8. Provides telephone and personal consultation to Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Opticians, patients and billing personnel.
9. Attends required meetings, complies with mandatory annual training and participates in professional development activities.
