UNC Rex has a robust and efficient surgical program.

We have two separate OR departments that perform both inpatient and outpatient procedures on adult and pediatric populations.

Our OR West has 12 Operating Rooms and OR East has 10 Operating Rooms and 1 Procedure Room.

The Nurses and Surgical Technologists provide intraoperative care for a variety of service lines including Plastics, GYN, GU, General, Bariatrics, Colorectal, Orthopedics, Neuro, Urology, Pulmonology and ENT.

Summary: The Surgical Technologist I works under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

Surgical technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Has baseline knowledge and ability to perform duties of surgical scrub at entity they serve.

Responsibilities: 1.Performs technical skill duties in all operating room specialty service areas, ensuring that proper technical practices are employed according to accepted standards of process.

2.Provides proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and sterilization techniques of specialty instrumentation.

3.Follows aseptic technique.

Proactively identifies contamination and/or breaks in aseptic technique and implements corrective actions.

4.Performs surgical counts.

Follows policies and procedures for incorrect counts and reports discrepancies appropriately.

5.Labels drugs and solutions; monitors quantities used.

6.Assists in the proper identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.

7.Actively participates in the planning and set up of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes in an organized manner to provide optimal accessibility during the procedure.

8.Assists the surgeon, demonstrating an understanding of the patient's anatomy and abnormalities which affect the surgical procedure.

9.Assists in picking cases and planning of instrument needs.

10.Recognizes and modifies scrubbing procedures based on pertinent information to develop modifications to standard approaches to care and communicates with the surgical team.

Responds to surgical emergencies and follows hospitalwide emergency management plans.

11.Inventories, receives, and stores supplies under the direction of Surgical Services leadership.

12.Identifies and reports defective instruments, supplies, and equipment.

Assists with restocking operating/procedure rooms and sub-sterile areas.

13.Assists the registered nurse during the intraoperative implementation phase of nursing practice.

14.Operates complex equipment and other resources in the operating room, troubleshooting as necessary 15.Serves as a mentor for Surgical Technician Trainees and will serve as a preceptor as needed.

  • Accurately process images for optimal quality. Match with appropriate paperwork for interpretation.
  • Charge radiographic procedures in; able to modify orders per protocol. Demonstrate acceptable film quality standards by critiquing positioning, technical factors, and collimation.
  • Understands and uses the Image Archival System

Learn more about the incentive program here: Work Schedule-Friday Saturday and Sunday 630pm-7:00am Responsibilities: 1) Conducts complex procedures and tests using Computed Tomography (CT) equipment to acquire and analyze patient diagnostic data.

Works in collaboration with various teams (Trauma, Stroke, Cardiology) to obtain necessary imaging for advanced diagnoses to aid in treatment options.

2) Assists the radiologist in performing high-risk invasive diagnostic techniques such as needle biopsies, aspirations, CT-guided joing injections, and CT-guided needle-wire placement exams for surgery.

Additionally, demonstrating competence by contributing input for alternative approaches and adjustment of scan parameters limiting radiation dosage.

3) Evaluates any contra-indications, such as medications, insufficient patient preparation or the patient's inability, or unwillingness to tolerate the procedure, notifying care teams and coordinating appropriate care, prior to the patient's arrival, if possible.

Works with Radiologists and other providers to identify patient needs to complete exam or discuss alternative exam.

4) Performs CTA perfusion, Code IA/Stroke/Bat, Red Trauma Series, Yellow Trauma Series, ROSC, and Portable CT procedures, as defined by the procedure and/or physician.

Demonstrates ability to train CT Tech I team members on these and other high-risk exams/procedures.

5) Recognizes diagnostic characteristics of normal and abnormal scans, anatomy, and questionable findings, alerting Radiologist for escalation of and/or additional care.

6) Demonstrates ability to manipulate parameters for CT Gated Watchman and Cardiac exams, including but not limited to proper manipulation of monitoring devices and competency manipulating both equipment and computer parameters.

7) Analyzes scan data throughout the course of the examination so that a comprehensive exam is completed and sufficient data is provided to the physician; along with any notes regarding complications that may have impacted quality of scan/images.

8) Triages care for general anesthesia (adult/pediatric) exams and provides education for care teams, ensures optimal parameters, equipment settings, contrast administration and post-processing of images.

9) Obtains images per protocols, manipulates images according to protocols, performs multi-planar and 3D reconstruction of image data, demonstrates a thorough knowledge of CT algorithms, and selects appropriate window and level setting according to anatomy.

10) Administers oral and rectal contrast to adult and pediatric patients according to protocols, establishes intravenous lines, administers IV contrast following safe and proper injection procedures, follows correct procedure to determine contrast eligibility, checks appropriate lab values before contrast injection per protocol Other Information Other information: Education Requirements: ● Completion of an accredited educational program in Radiological Science with an advanced registry in Computed Tomography.

Licensure/Certification Requirements: ● Must be registered with the American Registry of Radiological Sciences or certified with NMTCB(CT).

● All imaging specialists are required to maintain current competency in HCP BLS.
