Construction Engineer / Senior Construction Engineer

Location: Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) | Onsite

Role Summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a Construction Engineer with strong experience in capital projects, mechanical systems, field engineering, and construction execution within regulated or industrial environments. This role supports construction projects from planning and design through installation, commissioning, and closeout, with opportunities to act as a technical lead or discipline specialist.

Ideal candidates have backgrounds similar to mechanical engineers, field engineers, project engineers, or senior project managers who have worked on large-scale infrastructure, power, water, industrial, or government projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Support construction execution for capital projects including planning, constructability reviews, installation oversight, commissioning, and turnover
• Apply engineering judgment to resolve field issues, RFIs, constructability challenges, and schedule or scope impacts
• Coordinate with project managers, contractors, inspectors, and stakeholders to ensure safety, quality, and compliance
• Serve as a discipline lead or technical resource for mechanical, HVAC, piping, utilities, or facility systems
• Review drawings, specifications, submittals, and change orders
• Support cost estimating, forecasting, scheduling, and procurement activities
• Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, safety requirements, and regulatory frameworks
• Mentor or provide technical guidance to junior engineers or field staff as needed

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline
• OR
• 8+ years of progressive experience in construction engineering, field engineering, or capital project delivery within industrial, infrastructure, or regulated environments
• Demonstrated experience supporting design-build or design-bid-build projects
• Strong understanding of mechanical systems, piping, HVAC, utilities, or industrial facilities
• Experience working on large capital projects ($1M+ preferred)
• Ability to work independently in the field while coordinating with multidisciplinary teams

Preferred / Highly Aligned Backgrounds

• Mechanical Engineer, Field Engineer, Project Engineer, or Senior Project Manager experience
• Power generation, water/wastewater, utilities, industrial, or government infrastructure projects
• Commissioning, startup, or operational turnover experience
• Regulated environments (DOE, DoD, FEMA, utilities, oil & gas, pharma, heavy industrial)
• Proficiency with tools such as AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Procore, Primavera, BIM, or MS Office

Nice-to-Have

• Professional Engineer (PE) license
• Experience leading portions of multi-discipline construction projects

As a Senior Environmental Scientist at Intrepid you will assist the Environmental Manager with execution of our mine site environmental compliance and permitting responsibilities.

You will be responsible and should excel at the following:

Leading air, water and waste management compliance inspections.

Managing and arranging for disposal of universal, and hazardous wastes.

Assisting operations with implementation of best practice operational controls for environmental compliance

Developing and maintaining positive professional relationships with regulatory personnel

Overseeing the compilation of all relevant environmental data, statistics and information required by management, government bodies and agencies

Maintaining and submitting various records related to permit requirements

Overseeing the preparation and review of permit documents

Leading environmental special projects (groundwater sampling, compliance stack testing, etc)

Project management and contractor oversite

Be the environmental lead on continuous improvement projects

Perform other duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

5+ years of experience in environmental roles

Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Geology, Civil or Mining Engineering, or related technical field

Valid Driver's License

Proficiency with Google Earth and Microsoft Suite, including: Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel required.

Must be proficient in reading, analyzing and interpreting scientific data and information

Demonstrated experience in mining or other heavy industry environments

Able to communicate effectively to management and hourly work force

Experience working with federal, state and local environmental permitting preferred

Experience with Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Resource Conversation and Recovery Act

Knowledge of NEPA, MSHA, OSHA, DOT and other regulatory requirements preferred

SCHEDULE AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

9/80 schedule: Monday – Thursday, 9-hour workdays, Fridays worked, 8-hour workday, with every other Friday off. Schedule subject to change.

Work environment will vary from a climate controlled office to loud processing and loadout facilities, construction sites and remote field locations

Noise levels will vary from low to high

Employees are required to wear safety attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).when applicable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Job conditions require sitting up to 2/3 of work time, and hearing over 2/3 of work time. Standing, walking, using hands, reaching with hands, climbing and stooping up to 2/3 of the time depending on job responsibilities. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Up to 1/3 of the work time, the environment may consist of moving mechanical parts and high/precarious places. Typical noise levels vary from low to high (ex: business office, industrial and construction sites)

A pre-placement physical and hair follicle drug test will be required for anyone selected for this opportunity. Placement into the position will not be made until the results are received and cleared by Intrepid.

• Ability to operate within a 24/7 manufacturing environment.
• Comfort using basic computer systems and learning SAP or similar maintenance platforms.

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial maintenance, or related field.
• Experience in food, dairy, or high-volume manufacturing environments.
• Prior supervisory experience leading hourly maintenance teams.
• Exposure to preventive maintenance programs and reliability improvement initiatives.

• Competitive hourly wage: $90,000 - $100,000
