The Nursing Float Pool team provides patient care and support for a variety of patients on our intermediate and stepdown units. Nurses in this department would work as a part of a multidisciplinary team and have the opportunity to participate in rounds on their patients.
Nurse to patient ratios are 1:3 through 1:6 based on acuity and the units are staffed with a charge nurse, Nursing Care Assistants and Health Unit Coordinator 24/7.

What you will do:
In the Float Pool, it is embedded in our staff to “rise to the challenge and adapt to situations.” Due to the extensive training received in each area, our staff continue to be clinical experts, offering a broad skill set and range of knowledge throughout the various patient populations. As a Clinical Nurse II in Duke University Health System, you will plan and provide professional nursing care for patients in accordance with the medical and nursing plans of care and established policies and procedures. Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
- Plan, provide, supervise and document professional nursing care utilizing the nursing process for patients in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures. The Duke University Hospital (DUH) campus supports a 1067 bed hospital known for expertise in Inpatient, Urgent Outpatient, OR, Interventional, ED/Trauma, PEDS, Cardiac, Oncology, and Transplant services. We have a total of 20 clinical scanners, including 14 in various locations, 5 in the OR, and 1 portable scanner for Neuro ICU.
What you will do:
- Perform complex specialized tasks associated with the operation of CT scanners, power injectors, and related equipment in accordance with prescribed radiation safety procedures.
- Position patients for CT scans using patient positioning devices and protective equipment as necessary.
- Perform exams accurately per established protocols, policy, and patient safety standards.
- Assist radiologist with imaging procedures, starting IV's, and injecting contrast, if applicable.
- Assist radiologist with interventional CT procedures.
- Evaluate CT scans for technical quality, collate processed images in sequence of exposure and appropriately label. Film/transmit to Image Archival System.
- Schedule patients for procedures; assist with clerical functions.
- Charge procedures and supplies in EHR.
- Dispense and or order oral contrast to patients for CT scans.
- Maintain accurate patient records.
- Provide orientation and training to new CT technologists.
- Provide care for the psychological and physical needs of patients and their families for CT scans.
