COMPENSATION

Salary Range: $76,274 - $100,139 (Grade H, Hay Pt 346)

RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is accountable for assisting in the management, coordination, development and production of efficient, economical, and reliable timetables and work programs for NYC Transit Buses.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of full-time progressively responsible relevant experience, one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory or managerial capacity,

or a satisfactory equivalent of education and experience.

DESIRED SKILLS

Familiarity with automated scheduling data processing systems

Experience in bus schedule making process with the knowledge of Hastus

Familiarity with the routes and operations of the NYC Transit System Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communications skills

This position performs intermediate semiskilled work in the transportation of pupils to and from school and special events. Work is performed under regular supervision.

Essential Job Functions

• Drives a school bus; picks up and delivers students to/from school.
• Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
• Maintains safety equipment and reports unsafe bus conditions.
• Adheres to preventive maintenance schedule.
• Completes required forms and reports in an accurate and timely manner.
• Adheres and complies with safety rules, motoring regulations and laws.
• Attends all scheduled meetings.
• Loads bus according to established procedures.
• Assigns seats to all students.
• Follows designated route schedule.
• Stops at authorized route schedule.
• Notifies proper authorities in case of bus breakdown or deviations in schedule.
• Ensures that all pupils are accounted for and all runs are covered.
• Ensures that all pupils are off the bus immediately following each run.
• Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections of school buses and reports operating and equipment deficiencies.
• Washes bus, cleans bus inside and out, and fuels bus as required.
• Obeys all traffic laws and observes mandatory safety regulations for school bus operations.
• Transports only authorized students.
• Reports all accidents and completes required reports.
• Conducts periodic emergency bus evacuation drills.
• Transports students to special events and field trips.
• Ensures passenger safety and maintains discipline on bus.
• Makes bus available for periodic maintenance.
• Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or its equivalent.
• At least one year of related experience.
• Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of the problems involved in operating a school bus.
• Knowledge of the geography of the city and the location of streets.
• Skill in the safe operation of a school bus.
• Skill in assisting children using patience and understanding.
• Ability to detect malfunctioning equipment.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, associates and students.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

• The work environment is both inside and outside; the worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions.
• Extensive travel is required, exposing the employee to the hazards associated with travel by vehicle.
• This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
• Work requires climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities.

The United States Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) does not authorize use of "medical marijuana" as permitted under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a transportation employee's positive drug test result. Accordingly, in compliance with this federal regulation, Chesapeake Public Schools will not automatically accept a medical marijuana certification issued by an employee's medical professional as a valid medical explanation for a school transportation or safety-sensitive employee's positive drug test result.
