Summary

As an Operational Support Data Scientist at Securian Financial, you will bridge advanced analytics and day-to-day business operations by designing, deploying, monitoring, and continuously improving AI-driven solutions that support enterprise processes.

This role focuses on supporting reliable, scalable, and explainable AI solutions that enhance operational efficiency, decision support, customer experience, and risk management across Digital, Marketing, Sales, and Servicing functions.

You will operate at the intersection of data science, MLOps, and the business - ensuring models are maintained, enhanced, monitored, and aligned with Securian's Enterprise Data Strategy Vision and Operating Principles.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

AI Solution Development & Deployment

• Work with business teams to enhance existing solutions to enhance and optimize existing AI/ML solutions.

• Deploy and manage solutions using cloud-native tools (e.g., AWS SageMaker).

Operational Model Support & Optimization

• Monitor model performance, data drift, and operational KPIs.

• Troubleshoot production issues and continuously enhance and optimize models for performance, stability, and cost efficiency.

• Establish measurement frameworks to quantify operational impact of deployed solutions.

Data Engineering & Analytical Execution

• Transform structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data into actionable features and insights.

• Perform exploratory analysis and visualization to identify operational improvement opportunities.

• Collaborate with engineering teams to productionize data solutions.

Stakeholder Engagement & Explainability

• Partner with cross-functional operational stakeholders to understand business workflows and translate them into AI-enabled solutions.

• Communicate complex AI methodologies and results clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.

• Ensure model transparency, explainability, fairness, and ethical AI application in alignment with enterprise governance standards.

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience developing, deploying, or supporting production AI/ML models in cloud environments.

• Strong proficiency in Python and experience with tools such as AWS SageMaker and GitHub.

• Experience building operationalized data science solutions (not just prototypes).

• Strong understanding of statistical modeling, machine learning algorithms, and model validation techniques.

• Ability to clearly explain technical concepts, model outputs, and operational trade-offs to stakeholders.

• Strong ethical judgment with a commitment to responsible and unbiased AI development.

Preferred Qualifications

• 2+ years of hands-on experience in data science, applied AI, or machine learning.

• Experience supporting AI solutions in operational or production environments.

• Familiarity with MLOps practices, model governance frameworks, and automation tooling.

• Experience working in regulated industries (financial services preferred).

The School of Information at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a pool of part-time, non-tenure track lecturers to teach online courses in the Master of Information and Data Science (MIDS) program. This postdoctoral opportunity brings together faculty from UC Berkeley's School of Education (BSE); the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS); and the Social Science D-Lab to support one (1) postdoctoral scholar as they study the teaching and learning of Data Science. Scholars will apprentice with multiple projects to develop and contribute expertise and scholarship in ethical data science teaching and learning across precollege, 2-year college, and 4-year university contexts. A major goal is to prepare scholars who are conversant across sectors, in order to help create coherent and supportive data science learning trajectories for all students.

We seek applicants with complementary relevant skill-sets and training in data science and education. This includes applicants with different educational backgrounds (e.g. research, regional, or liberal arts colleges; technical and community colleges), methodologies (e.g. qualitative and quantitative approaches to social sciences research), and experiences related to teaching or educational research (e.g. tutoring, teaching, curriculum development). We hope scholars will all share commitments to contributing high-quality, ethical Data Science Education teaching, curriculum, and scholarship. Duties of Position:

Year 1: Researchers will work with specialists among the faculty in Computer Science, Data-Intensive Social Science, Education, and Statistics in research rotations across departments; attend monthly workshops designed to develop the knowledge base required to conduct consequential research in this field; and become integral members of a growing community of practice at UC Berkeley and across the SF Bay Area.

Year 2: Researchers will engage with a year-long apprenticeship with a faculty mentor and will develop an independent project within the context of one of the many educational initiatives led by project personnel. Fellows will have the opportunity to teach workshops in Python/Jupyter, social science methodology, data literacy pedagogies, or data science curriculum development, and they may also teach undergraduate courses in Data Science/Statistics or STEM teacher preparation, no more than one course per year in the lecturer title. They will present their independent work at campus colloquia and will engage the broader Data Science Education field through scholarly conferences, technical workshops, and UC Berkeley's annual Data Science Education convening.

• Strong experience with DAG orchestration (e.g., Apache Airflow).
• Solid understanding of cloud technologies, preferably Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
• Advanced proficiency in SQL for data processing and transformations.
• Hands-on experience running and tuning Apache Spark jobs.
• Experience developing APIs using Python and FastAPI.
• Strong understanding of data quality frameworks, checks, and validation techniques.
• Proficiency in Python, Java, Scala, or PySpark, with strong SQL expertise.
• Hands-on experience with GCP data services, including BigQuery, BigTable, Dataproc, Dataflow, and cloud-native ETL patterns.
• Experience with software delivery methodologies such as Agile, Scrum, and CI/CD practices.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.
• Good communication and documentation skills.
