The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. Our medical malpractice defense firm is seeking an experienced civil litigator to join our team. The Attorney - Civil Litigation (Defense) will manage an active caseload from intake through resolution, partnering closely with partners, nurses, paralegals, and staff. Ideal candidates bring strong defense-side experience, excellent writing and advocacy skills, and the ability to drive matters forward with autonomy.
Key Responsibilities
- Ethically, responsibly, and autonomously manage day-to-day case operations with minimal supervision; escalate material issues to partners as appropriate.
- Track and manage case deadlines (including answers, discovery, motions, and court-ordered schedules).
- Draft and finalize pleadings and discovery (answers, discovery requests and responses, disclosures, productions, deposition summaries, and motion practice).
- Oversee and coordinate nurse, paralegal, and secretary staff to ensure clear task delegation and timely execution.
- Attend and cover depositions; prepare detailed deposition reports and case assessments.
- Coordinate and conduct calls with expert witnesses; assist with expert strategy and preparation.
- Review and analyze medical records; collaborate with nurses and paralegals to organize expert packets and case materials.
- Prepare for trial, including pretrial filings, exhibit and witness preparation, and trial notebooks; attend and participate in trial.
- Meet billable expectations: 1,950 hours per year (162.5 hours per month).
Required Qualifications
- Attorney - Civil Litigation (Defense): Minimum 3 years of civil litigation experience on the defense side.
- Active and in-good-standing Georgia Bar License.
- Proven experience drafting pleadings, managing discovery, taking/defending depositions, and handling court appearances.
