Responsibilities

Performs Patient Care Activities as delegated by the Nurse utilizing applicable policies and procedures to ensure patient needs and expectations are met.
  • Knowledgeable and skilled in applicable procedures in providing care.
  • Provides hygiene needs of assigned patients (AM/PM care, oral hygiene and denture care, perineal care, shampoo, bathing, shaving, care of TED/SCD hose.)
  • Provides nutritional needs of assigned patients. (Tray distribution, setting up trays, offering supplements, feeding, adding tube feeding and recording intake.)
  • Provides elimination needs of assigned patient. (Foley care, bowel movements, bladder training, enemas, and external catheters; records output.)
  • Provides skin care of assigned patients. (turning, positioning, recognition and prevention of skin breakdown, operation of special beds, nail care, and back rubs.)
  • Provides comfort measures (Proper positioning, back rubs, oral care, wrinkle free bed sheets and ensuring that bedside table, water pitcher, urinal are within reach.)
  • Provides activity needs of assigned patients (i.e. turning, chair, ambulating, walker, and crutches).
  • Performs measurements of assigned patients (I&O, hemoccult, gastrocult, TPR, B/P, weights, empty drains, abdominal girth, hose measurements).
  • Performs additional skills as directed and supervised by the nurse, after training and certification, i.e. intermittent urinary catheterization, phlebotomy, and clean dressing changes (varies by unit or area).
  • Assists with admission, transfer, and discharge of patient.
  • Completes assigned aspects of admission process including vital signs, height and weight, room setup, room orientation, assists patient to bed, assures call light available etc.
  • Sets up equipment for care (IV poles, admission kit, others)
  • Stores and transfers belongings (dentures, hearing aids, glasses and other personal items).
  • Packs up all patient belongings at discharge.
  • Achieves patient satisfaction when providing patient care.
  • Makes rounds minimally every two hours to assure that patients are comfortable, positioned properly, call light available, room orderly.

9 bed open ICU; 16 bed Progressive Care Unit; 24 bed Medical; 9 bed Surgical/Orthopedic/and observation short stay (can also house peds admissions) Average Census for the program is about 15-16 per physician; additional physicians assist when the census is high; APP s share this volume MRI, CT, x ray, Nuclear Med, Cath Lab, ultra sound (weekend CT available) 2 physician coverage per day 7/on-7/off shifts; Monday-Sunday; hospitalist switch responsibility for 1 st call and admissions Hosp 1 is on long call for late afternoon admissions and takes second call at night (backing up the APP by phone; rarely comes back to the hospital after 6pm ); Hosp 2 can leave when done with rounds if there are no new admissions; the next day they switch CMO assists with coverage when census is high After rounds, hospitalist may cover service by phone unless needed on site 2 advance practice providers (Nurse Practitioner) covering 7on/7off night shift APP hours are 7pm to 7am.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direct supervision of a Radiologist the CT Technologist performs exams at a technical level that does not require direct supervision over technical detail. This position requires advanced medical imaging knowledge, including skill in cross-sectional anatomy.   A complete knowledge of all types of diagnostic CT exams and interventional procedures is required. Uses independent judgment, ingenuity and acquired knowledge to obtain quality diagnostic images. Assists with interventional procedures. 

COMPETENCIES:

  • Must have a full knowledge of CT exams and interventional procedures. Technologist must be capable of performing exams independently. 
  • Must have a complete working knowledge in the principals of physics, anatomy, medical terminology, sterile technique and radiation protection as it relates to CT practice.
  • Must be able to speak, read and write effectively using the English language. 
  • This position requires the incumbent work cooperatively with department staff by sharing in taking rotational call and holiday hours.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITES:

3.     Assures female patients of child bearing ages are screened for possibility of pregnancy.

4.     Demonstrates skill in IV insertion.

5.     Documents exams into radiology system to ensure proper billing.

6.     Independently runs one’s own schedule and properly documents patient flow while remaining sensitive to patients care and other co-workers needs and desires.  Remains flexible in patient flow in order to accommodate daily emergency calls and requests for inpatient procedures.  Assists in obtaining transportation for patients when procedures are scheduled by internal Hospitalists, Physicians, etc.

7.     Demonstrates competency in performing all types of CT scans

8.     Processes CT exams utilizing the teleradiology system during off shift hours.  Able to trouble shoot problems and contact correct help lines if necessary.

9.     Demonstrates the ability to choose correct protocols for patients based on age and size.

10.  Accurately completes computer (Meditech) patient procedure documentation.  Assures the accuracy of documentation understanding that all items will be charged to the patient’s hospital bill.  Submits correctly documented and labeled exam to the Radiologist and is available for review and discussion. Reviews each exam for technical accuracy.

11.  Transports patients when needed.

12.   Performs quality assurance in accordance with the American College of Radiology guidelines for CT.

13.  Reviews post instructions to patient (example: hydration, when physician will receive results)

14.  Demonstrates ability to trouble shoot any electronic equipment such as scanner, workstations, and printers.

15.  Independently responds on a call basis to perform procedures.  Drives to affiliate and/or contracted location to provide services as may be required.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent; graduate of an ARRT approved Radiological Technology School program is required.
  • Registration and certification with the American Registry of Radiological Technologists and licensure with the State of Connecticut are required. 
  • Must remain current with ARRT continuing education requirements and maintain an active ARRT certificate. 
  • Advanced certification from the ARRT in Computerized Tomography is expected from the incumbent within one year of hire.

Polysomnographic Testing Procedures

- Train junior technologists when necessary.
- Make beds and ensure the cleanliness of the facility
- Review the information in patient paperwork to include sleep/wake complaints and order for study.
- Greet the patient upon arrival and escort him/her to the sleep room. Educate patient and family concerning overnight/morning procedures, answering any questions. Interview the patient to obtain information needed for the completion of pre-test paperwork.
- Set up and calibrate monitoring equipment, selecting the appropriate recording montage.
- Apply electrodes and other recording devices to the patient and verify proper function.
- Perform pre-test calibrations, making any necessary adjustments to equipment.
- Institute “lights out” and document patient data.
- Monitor the polysomnogram, obtaining a high-quality recording.
- Recognize and document clinical and physiological events pertinent to the study.
- Communicate information on patient status to the medical director as needed.
- Recognize and document all artifacts and equipment malfunctions, taking the proper steps to eliminate them. Report any equipment malfunctions to the direct supervisor.
- Call the sleep center manager or 24-hour technical support line for assistance as needed.
- Assist the patient with needs during the procedure in order to obtain the required sleep/wake data.
- Understand indications, contraindications, and adverse effects of continuous and bilevel-positive airway pressure as well as oxygen administration.
- Apply and titrate positive airway pressure and oxygen therapy based on physician order and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Wake the patient and record post-test calibrations.
- Gently remove all electrodes and transducers from the patient and allow time for clean up.
- Have the patient complete the post-test paperwork before discharge.
- Strip beds and leave room in appropriate condition for housekeeping.
- Copy and upload all required data for the scoring technologist.
- Inventory and order equipment/supplies per policy.

Patient and Equipment Safety

- Recognize and respond appropriately and quickly to patient physiologic events.
- Safely lift/move patients and equipment, using proper body mechanics.
- Ensure the safety and welfare of all patients, including those with special needs.
- Check the availability and function of emergency equipment.
- Comply with Universal Precautions at all times.
- Properly disinfect/sterilize equipment, electrodes, and transducers.

Complex Procedures

Minimum Qualifications

Education

- Must have a high school diploma and additional education in an AMA-approved health-related program.

Licensure

- Proof of RPSGT credentialing by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists.
- Must meet requirements prescribed by the American Association of Sleep Technologists (AAST) to maintain RPSGT credential.
- Current and valid CPR certification.

Experience

- A minimum of 1 year of medical-related experience along with additional education in an AMA-approved health-related program
- Prior experience as a sleep technologist, EEG technologist, respiratory care practitioner, or nurse.

Physical Requirements

- Stand, walk, bend, and reach above the shoulder for long periods of time in a clinical setting.
- Must be able to occasionally lift or carry and frequently push or pull up to 100 lbs. as part of the role
- Regularly exposed to healthcare settings that may require personal protective equipment

Job Summary

Morehouse General Hospital is seeking an energetic, compassionate, and skilled Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) to join our growing Rehab Services team. Under the direct supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist, the PTA will provide high-quality rehabilitative care with a primary focus on outpatient services, while also supporting acute and swing bed patients.

Primary Responsibilities

- Administer treatments as outlined in the Physical Therapist’s evaluation and treatment plan
- Assist patients in achieving their maximum functional potential within their physical capabilities
- Treat a wide range of conditions, including orthopedic injuries, joint replacements, CVA, generalized weakness, and more
- Apply various techniques to reduce pain, improve strength, mobility, and endurance
- Instruct patients in proper exercise techniques and individualized home exercise programs
- Accurately document patient progress and services in NetHealth (EHR software)
- Collaborate effectively with therapists, physicians, case managers, techs, and the broader care team
- Participate in department improvement initiatives and program development
- Maintain timely and accurate billing and documentation
- Assist Physical Therapists as needed in both inpatient and outpatient care settings
- Other duties as assigned
