Position Overview
The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) invites applications for a UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Area Weed Science Advisor at the Assistant rank serving Sonoma, Napa, and Marin counties.
The Weed Science Advisor will implement an innovative multi-county extension education and applied research program to address weed management challenges in the three-county region, including alternatives to glyphosate, the effectiveness of organic weed control methods, herbicide resistance, air and water quality issues related to weed control practices, and the control of invasive weed species.
UCCE Advisors are responsible for conducting applied research and extending knowledge. Research activities are applied and mission-oriented, focused on addressing challenges in our communities. Extension activities are the educational methods that advisors use to share research results directly with clientele and communities, increasing knowledge and understanding of science-based research that promotes the adoption of practices and technologies to solve local problems. Extension activities may include individual farm consultations, presentations, or organizing educational workshops, short courses, and field demonstrations. Information may also be disseminated through various channels, such as radio, webinars, fact sheets, policy briefs, news blogs, social media, and other outlets. Publications are expected in various formats, including newsletters, popular press articles, curricula, conference proceedings, and peer-reviewed journals.
Successful research and extension programs result in new information that improves knowledge or understanding, and eventual adoption of new skills or practices, changed attitudes or policies, and improved environmental, economic, or social conditions. UCCE Advisors are evaluated through an academic advancement system based on four criteria: 1) extending knowledge, 2) applied research and creative activity, 3) professional competence and activity, and 4) university and public service.
Location Headquarters: This position will be based at the UC Cooperative Extension Office in Sonoma County, located at 133 Aviation Blvd., Santa Rosa, California 95403.
Position Details
Weeds are a critical challenge to the regional productivity of agriculture, pasture, and rangelands, and are responsible for significant production losses, management costs, and labor requirements each year. Growers, ranchers, dairy producers, pest control advisors, and the UC Cooperative Extension network need an Area Weed Science Advisor to provide locally relevant expertise to address production efficiency, crop safety, livestock forage, and environmental issues related to sustainable weed management in the region.
This position will take an integrated approach to weed management, encompassing organic and conventional approaches, while serving a broad range of clientele across multiple cropping systems, pasture, and rangeland. In addition to working across a spectrum of weed management practices, the position will develop expertise and deliver information on related topics, including weed identification, invasive plant management, cover crops, and livestock-crop integration, in collaboration with relevant colleagues. The position will also address aquatic weed identification and management in agricultural water sources, such as irrigation ponds and reservoirs.
The advisor will extend science-based information to clientele who grow grapes, olives, apples, and other orchard crops, a variety of specialty crops, and graze livestock on organic and conventional pastures and rangelands. Key clientele groups include agricultural producers, dairy producers, livestock producers, rangeland managers, Pest Control Advisors (PCAs), Agricultural Commissioner office staff, public resource management agency staff (e.g., Natural Resources Conservation Service, Resource Conservation Districts, Cal Trans, regional parks), and nonprofit conservation organizations. Collaboration with these groups will identify issues and opportunities to extend information through seminars, workshops, field days, internet resources, and publications, both producer-oriented and peer-reviewed.
The advisor will collaborate with other Cooperative Extension Advisors, Specialists, and clientele to conduct applied research that facilitates the broad implementation of integrated weed management programs across diverse agricultural and grazed landscapes. The advisor's research program will utilize a variety of cultural and mechanical controls, along with emerging technologies, to reduce reliance on herbicides as the sole control tool while stewarding the natural resources that are integral to the sustained health of agricultural and rangeland production systems.
In addition to collaborating with UC colleagues, the advisor will work with external networks, including, but not limited to, the Sonoma, Napa, and Marin Weed Management Areas, the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District, the Napa County Regional Parks and Open Space District, the Napa Land Trust, the Marin Agricultural Land Trust, and private industry.
Counties of Responsibility. This position will serve Sonoma, Napa, and Marin counties.
Reporting Relationship: In this appointment, you will report directly to the UC Cooperative Extension Area Director for Sonoma, Napa, and Marin counties. This is not a remote position; the advisor must be available to work onsite at the headquarters location and travel to and be present in the other assigned counties. Specific expectations for maintaining office hours and fieldwork in the geographic area covered by this position will be outlined by the supervisor upon hire.

Salary: The salary range for this Cooperative Extension Advisor position is Assistant Rank, Step I ($85,600) to Step VI ($108,600). GOALS:

Summary
The Community Standards Coordinator has primary responsibility for working with the student conduct process, providing support to students facing a range of challenges including but not limited to issues related to regulating behavior and managing conduct, and serve as a role model for, and advise a wide variety of students. The Community Standards Coordinator will help plan and provide a variety of interventions, referrals and follow up services, maintain accurate and professional case records and provide outreach and education about these services to the campus community.
The Community Standards Coordinator provides support to the Dean of Students and serves as a member of the Student Life team, who are committed to creating a campus community where all are welcomed, supported, and safe. The Community Standards Coordinator supports case management for students, families, and guests interacting with the Dean of Students office, assists with crisis response, serves as a lead member of the Care Team, and provides leadership in the process of educating students on the Code of Student Conduct and the behavioral standards of the campus community.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Educate about and enforce community standards: Follow protocols that facilitate prompt and thorough follow-up on all reports (general incident reports, bias concerns, grievance complaints) with effective and professional record-keeping. Serve as a primary administrative hearing officer for student conduct violations. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records in Maxient.
- Maintain and support the student conduct process and procedures: Provide leadership within the student conduct system by coordinating hearing panels, meeting with students and families, and participating in and/or monitoring investigative processes. Serve as investigator in bias or Title IX complaints, completing annual trainings and/or certifications as needed. Ensure accurate and professional record keeping as it relates to student conduct investigations, hearings, and sanctions. Recruit and train hearing panelists and administrative hearing officers, create and/or revise hearing materials, make updates to the student conduct database, and serve in other conduct-related roles as appropriate.
- Support student-care initiatives: Serve as a lead member of the Care Team. Assist the Dean of Students and other staff with outreach and response to reports of student concern. Document all case management concerns, issues, and follow up in the Maxient case management system.
- Program Support: Provide support to the Bias Incident Response Team (BIRT) through student intake or with the investigative process. Assist with the training of staff members and student paraprofessionals to respond appropriately to emergency, crisis and other difficult student situations and to document follow-up promptly and effectively. Intervene with students and/or parents in a variety of highly emotional or tense situations in an effort to stabilize or resolve before escalating to the Dean of Students. Represent Student Life at admission visit days, orientation programs, and in other on-and-off campus settings.
- Education outreach and student mentoring/advising: Provide education and support to students, faculty, and staff to help recognize and respond to students in distress or crisis, national/local trends in student health and success, and issues related to student academic or personal concerns. Create and mentor team of students who serve as peer-mentors or peer-educators on topics related to personal wellness, campus resources, and compliance/community standards. Collaborate with Student Involvement staff, Counseling Center staff, and other campus partners in outreach activities, as appropriate. May include service on departmental, Division, University or ad-hoc committees, advising student organizations, projects, or other duties as assigned.
- Routine Responsibilities: Support the operations of the student life office which facilitates daily inquiries, requests, and concerns from students, employees, families, and others, whether in-person, via email, or via phone call, and work to route those to the best person/office at SXU for proper resolution. Support student activities and events with some after hours participation. Work with the SLP on Call team to coordinate and provide ongoing training for paraprofessional staff.
- Duty Responsibilities/Student Life Professional on Call
- Serve in an evening and weekend duty rotation system over 10 months. While on call, serve as a resource to University Housing Staff and Public Safety. The Student Life Professional on Call is expected to remain on campus or be within 15 minutes of campus.
- The Student Life Professional on Call will carry a duty mobile phone and respond to all calls.
- The Student Life Professional on Call will follow duty procedures and notify appropriate staff members regarding situations that impact the University community/ residence halls and/or students.
- This is a live-in position. Compensation includes a furnished apartment, internet, laundry (in building). A pet is permitted with signed agreement.
- Description of Hours: Mondays through Fridays, 8:30am to 4:30pm. Some nights, weekends, and special-event attendance required (on call, etc.)
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in education, human resources, political science, social work, or related field;
- Minimum of 1 to 2 years professional experience, preferably in a college/university setting, responding to student conduct or crises, providing direct service to students in distress, with evidence of successful partnerships with students, families, faculty, and staff;
- Experience in program development, education and outreach efforts, marketing, and/or training;
- Commitment to fostering student learning and support in a diverse and inclusive environment, shaped by the Core Values of the University and the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy and the Conference for Mercy in Higher Education.

Northern Region: Port Huron, MI Southeast Region: Houma, LA Southwest Region: San Diego, CA Duties and Responsibilities As a Marine Interdiction Agent, you will perform marine-based law enforcement operations for the detection, prevention, interdiction, and apprehension of terrorists, terrorist weapons, and other contraband and persons from illegally entering or attacking the United States.
Typical duties may include: Monitoring behavior patterns and activities of suspect persons, vehicles, or vessels believed to be engaged in illegal activities.
Interpreting radar data to calculate appropriate intercept while tracking vessels and people to a successful interdiction.
Searching persons, vessels, baggage, and cargo for contraband or weapons incidental to detention or arrest.
Collecting, refining, and analyzing strategic and tactical intelligence.
Qualifications This GS-11 grade level position has a selective factor: As a minimum qualification requirement all candidates must have a qualifying Merchant Mariner Credential.

You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Independently applying advanced skill in controlling/commanding law enforcement scenes to include conducting searches, making arrests, processing arrests and seizure of evidence and property.
Conducting investigative inquiries using various techniques, examining files and records, physical and documentary evidence to identify logical conclusions.
Utilizing cameras and other electronic high-tech surveillance equipment to gather evidence, collect, evaluate, and then preserve that physical and documentary evidence.
Highly skilled in writing comprehensive arrest, criminal and incident reports.
Assisting government or state attorneys in preparation for court cases or grand juries, testifies as a law enforcement officer in court proceedings, and administrative forums.
Considerable experience applying arrest authorities and constitutional law in various alleged criminal situations, or knowledge and experience of CBP laws, regulations, policies, legal precedent.
OR GS-11 Education Substitution for experience: A Ph.D.
or equivalent doctoral degree, three (3) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M.
OR Combining Experience and Education: A combination of successfully completed post-bachelors' education (above) and experience.

Coast Guard Issued Merchant Mariner Credentials (MMC): You must submit a valid, legible copy of your Merchant Mariner Credential at time of application.

Qualifying Capacities are Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel (OUPV), Mate of 200 gross tons or greater (Inland, Great Lakes, Near Coastal or Oceans), Chief Mate, Second Mate, and Third Mate Unlimited Oceans or Master of 25 GRT or greater (Inland, Great Lakes, Near Coastal or Oceans) OR An Accepted MMLD Application: You must submit proof an accepted MMLD application, for a MMC with a qualifying capacity, and a credential status that is in a positive standing.
It cannot be pending additional information for MMLD application process.
You must have your Official MMC Credential in hand at the time of scheduling and at assessment appointment.
