Wellstar North Fulton Hospital has an opportunity for a Paramedic in the Emergency Department. Full-Time Evening shift

Reports to Manager of Emergency Department. The Emergency Department Paramedic is a proactive member of an interdisciplinary team of licensed and unlicensed care givers who ensure that patients, families and significant others receive individualized high quality, safe patient care. They practice in a clinical environment that is administered by Nurse Managers and other leaders.
As an integral member of the Emergency Department team the Paramedic will support treatment in the hospital emergency department (ED). The paramedic will be required to assist with patient care treatment at the direction of the physician and/or the Registered Professional Nurse (RN) that directs plan of care, team goals, and performance. The paramedic shall cover the range of services provided in a medical treatment facility in accordance with O.C.G.A. 31-11-59 which outlines the services of paramedics in hospitals and defined hospital specific duties. In addition, the paramedic promotes and restores patients' health and the overall patient experience by collaborating with physicians, RNs, and multi-disciplinary team members, and providing support to patients, families and significant others. The ED Medical Director oversees the scope of practice of the paramedic in the ED in accordance with the Georgia Paramedic Scope of Practice and the Wellstar Paramedic Scope of Practice.
It is expected that all Emergency Department Paramedics possess a Georgia paramedic license and the national registry certification for paramedics. The paramedic must be knowledgeable and adhere to the scope of paramedic practices as outlined in the Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Public Health Office of Emergency Medical Services scope of practices. As a member of the patient services team, it is expected that the individual upholds the voice of the patient, system policies and procedures while supporting service excellence goals.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

Patient Care
- Assists medical and nursing staff with the care and treatment of Emergency patients
- Assists in the intake process by greeting and interviewing patients and inputting pertinent medical information into the computer system.
- Performs and assists nursing and medical staff in various diagnostic testing and procedures such as performing EKG, placing patients on the cardiac monitor, venipuncture, point of care testing, wound care, applying orthopedic devices and equipment, applying splints and casts and other duties assigned within the scope of practice.
- Perform functions as delegated by the RN such as: i. Initiate IV ii. Administer Oral, IM and some IV medications iii. Perform glucose monitoring iv. Perform ISTAT testing
- Transport patients to the ICU
- Transport and monitor critical patients
- Assist with patient flow in the ED
- Perform command center technician duties
- Perform monitor tech duties
- Receive EMS patients into the ED and begin to collect data to assist the RN in the initial triage and assessment of the patient
- Assist with education of the patient and family.
- Respond as assigned to Trauma Alert, Code Fast, STEMI Alerts Technician Duties
- Ensure that the rooms are patient ready
- Stock patient care rooms
- Clean in accordance with infection control policies rooms in between patients
- Transport patients as requested by the RN

Required Minimum Education:

High School graduate Required or
GED High School graduate or possess a General Educational Development (GED) Degree Graduation from an accredited paramedic training program. Required

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):
All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

- Basic Life Support or BLS - Instructor
- Pediatric Adv Life Support or PALS - Provisional or PALS - Instructor
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support or ACLS - Provisional or ACLS - Instructor
- Paramedic

Required Minimum Experience:
Completion of accredited paramedic program and associated clinical hours. Required and
Minimum 2 years experience as a paramedic in the field or in a hospital setting Preferred

Education/Experience Requirements

REQUIRED:

Follows chain of command and brings issues to the attention of the supervisor, Assistant Director or Medical Director.

Follows regulatory, accreditation, safety and hospital standards, policies and procedures.

Instructs, orients and mentors students, employees, residents, patients and other health care providers as applicable.

Maintains an adequate inventory of all chemicals and supplies.

Accurately prepares, labels, stores and disposes of reagents, standards, controls and specimens for analysis.

Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.

Performs validation testing that is needed to implement new tests in the laboratory and monitors normal ranges as appropriate.

Reviews and correlates results of laboratory tests related to the patients diagnosis and to previous studies as appropriate, recognizing abnormal results and critical/alert values.

Initiates corrective action when indicated.

Uses and wears PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) as necessary to perform job duties safely and minimize risk.

Utilizes lab-defined database and software programs appropriately to document all phases of testing in the laboratory.

Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

  • This position will work with a busy Family Medicine physician and will also work with other MAs and providers as well in a great workplace culture.

  • Our family medicine providers can address diagnosed health concerns early, before they become serious, as well as help you better manage existing conditions including physical, mental, and social health issues across all ages and stages of life.

What You Will Do:
  • This MA position will support a busy physician and also will support nurse visits, in-basket tasks, and float to other providers in the clinic when needed.

  • In addition to primary MA duties, you will administer immunizations, complete child well visits, and assist with minor procedures.

  • You will also perform phlebotomy, POC testing, UAs, ear lavages, and also complete tasks and orders in the task inbox. ​

Work Schedule:
  • 36 hours per week, 4 - 9-hour days.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required at hire.

  • MA certification required within 90 days of hire from one of the following Saint Alphonsus approved agencies:

    • American Association of Medical Assistants (CMA)

    • American Medical Technologists (RMA)

    • National Healthcareer Association (CCMA)

    • National Center for Competency Testing (NCMA)

    • National Association of Health Professionals (NRCMA)

    • American Medical Certification Association (CMAC)

    • National Phlebotomy Certification Examination (NPCE MA)

  • New Graduates: 1) MA certificate of completion required from an accredited program or school. 2) Completion of either a 100-hour MA externship or 6 months MA experience in lieu of the externship hours even with MA certification.

  • Medical Assistant with Experience: 1 Year of MA experience OR Current MA Certification OR obtain or renew certification within 90 days from hire from approved credentialing agencies listed above.

  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare providers certification from either AHA, ARC or the Military Training Network is required at hire.

  • *EMT and CNA certifications will not count towards an MA certification. Obtaining the MA certification typically requires completing an MA Program or working as a Medical Assistant for at least 1 year. See each of the credentialing organization sites for additional details.
