Reports to Manager of Emergency Department. The Emergency Department Paramedic is a proactive member of an interdisciplinary team of licensed and unlicensed care givers who ensure that patients, families and significant others receive individualized high quality, safe patient care. They practice in a clinical environment that is administered by Nurse Managers and other leaders.
As an integral member of the Emergency Department team the Paramedic will support treatment in the hospital emergency department (ED). The paramedic will be required to assist with patient care treatment at the direction of the physician and/or the Registered Professional Nurse (RN) that directs plan of care, team goals, and performance. The paramedic shall cover the range of services provided in a medical treatment facility in accordance with O.C.G.A. 31-11-59 which outlines the services of paramedics in hospitals and defined hospital specific duties. In addition, the paramedic promotes and restores patients' health and the overall patient experience by collaborating with physicians, RNs, and multi-disciplinary team members, and providing support to patients, families and significant others. The ED Medical Director oversees the scope of practice of the paramedic in the ED in accordance with the Georgia Paramedic Scope of Practice and the Wellstar Paramedic Scope of Practice.
It is expected that all Emergency Department Paramedics possess a Georgia paramedic license and the national registry certification for paramedics. The paramedic must be knowledgeable and adhere to the scope of paramedic practices as outlined in the Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Public Health Office of Emergency Medical Services scope of practices. As a member of the patient services team, it is expected that the individual upholds the voice of the patient, system policies and procedures while supporting service excellence goals.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Patient Care
- Assists medical and nursing staff with the care and treatment of Emergency patients
- Assists in the intake process by greeting and interviewing patients and inputting pertinent medical information into the computer system.
- Performs and assists nursing and medical staff in various diagnostic testing and procedures such as performing EKG, placing patients on the cardiac monitor, venipuncture, point of care testing, wound care, applying orthopedic devices and equipment, applying splints and casts and other duties assigned within the scope of practice.
- Perform functions as delegated by the RN such as: i. Initiate IV ii. Administer Oral, IM and some IV medications iii. Perform glucose monitoring iv. Perform ISTAT testing

- Receive EMS patients into the ED and begin to collect data to assist the RN in the initial triage and assessment of the patient
- Assist with education of the patient and family.

Job Summary
The Licensed Practical Nurse - Specialty Office provides general nursing care to patients, families and caregivers in the Medical Group practices. The LPN assists and advocates for the patient and family's health in support of the patient centered approach and delivery model of care, and is an active care team member. Responsible for collaborating with physicians/providers, registered professional nurses and multidisciplinary care team members. The Licensed Practical Nurse can perform tasks and responsibilities within the framework of case finding, health coaching, and supportive care under the direction of the registered professional nurse or licensed physician or licensed health care provider. Nursing shall be performed in accordance with the standards outlined for Licensed Practical Nurse in the NYS Education Law, NYS Office of the Professions, and by the State Nurse Practice Act. The Licensed Practical Nurse will follow the mission, vision, values, policies and procedures of Mohawk Valley Health System.
Core Job Responsibilities
* Gather patient measurements and collect patient data.
* Record and report patient findings.
* Prepare patient for patient examination and treatment.
* Assist specialty providers with examinations, treatments and procedures.
* Perform tasks within the framework of supportive care, under the clinical direction of a licensed health care provider or registered professional nurse.
* Support self-care, self- management and the established plan of care.
* Utilize standard precautions and practice at all times.
* Maintain equipment, supplies, inventory, and a safe and clean work environment.
* Maintain technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, mandatory in-services; reviewing publications and participating in department committee meetings or work groups.
* Engage in quality improvement initiatives including continuing education, participation in system-wide and department specific teams.
* Maintain a cooperative relationship among the healthcare team by effectively communicating information.
* Respond to patient requests, communicates effectively to the licensed health care provider who can fulfill the patient request.
* Perform other duties as required.
Education/Experience Requirements
REQUIRED:
* Graduate of a practical nursing education program.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
REQUIRED
* Current New York State licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
* Basic Life Support Certification - must receive BLS certification within 6 weeks of hire date.
