RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct in‑depth legal research and analysis to support litigation matters, including commercial disputes and trusts & estates litigation (e.g., will contests, fiduciary disputes, accounting proceedings, and probate litigation).
- Draft and prepare legal documents, including pleadings, briefs, motions, discovery demands, and settlement agreements.
- Collaborate closely with senior attorneys to develop and execute case strategies.

- Establish and maintain strong client relationships through effective communication and advocacy, including with fiduciaries, beneficiaries, and business clients.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of 1 year of litigation experience, preferably including exposure to:
- Commercial litigation (contract disputes, partnership disputes, bankruptcy litigation, class actions, securities litigation, consumer protection), and/or
- Trusts & estates litigation (contested probate matters, discovery under SCPA 2103 proceedings, objections to fiduciary conduct, accounting disputes, or related Surrogate’s Court matters).
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Active New Jersey State Bar admission.

About Dependency Legal Services: Dependency Legal Services (DLS) is a non-profit law firm committed to serving children and parents involved in child abuse and neglect cases. We provide legal advocacy for families across six California counties, representing clients in high-volume, fast-paced dependency proceedings. Attorneys in this role will work directly with clients, providing in-court representation and advocating at all stages of juvenile dependency cases.
Position Overview: We are seeking an Associate Attorney to represent children and parents in dependency proceedings, including law and motion hearings, trials, and client interviews. This position offers extensive training, mentoring, and the opportunity to positively impact clients in crisis. We welcome candidates with 0-8 years of experience, including those awaiting bar results. Attorneys in this role must demonstrate a strong commitment to advocacy, multi-tasking, and working collaboratively in a team environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Represent clients in all phases of juvenile dependency proceedings (Welfare & Institutions Code § 300).
- Conduct client interviews, maintain frequent communication, and ensure timely responses to calls, texts, and emails.
- Prepare for and participate in hearings, trials, and legal proceedings, including legal research and writing.
- Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of social workers and senior attorneys.
- Advise clients about their rights and legal proceedings in a developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed manner.
- Work on ancillary legal issues, including criminal cases, housing, and government assistance qualifications.
- Engage in witness contact (lay and expert), subpoenas, and correspondence with parties involved in cases (relatives, opposing counsel, service providers, etc.).
- Handle contested and non-contested appearances, pre-court staffings, hearings, and trials.
- Make appellate filings, including writs and notices of appeal, and argue for necessary appellate relief.
- Maintain accurate records, data entry in JCATS, and regular meetings with DLS staff and Executive Team.
- Participate in ongoing training to build legal expertise, enhance courtroom skills, and deepen knowledge of dependency practice.
- Contribute to program development, public presentations, and community engagement.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Active member in good standing of the State Bar of California (or pending bar results).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Commitment to serving low-income, diverse ethnic communities, and working with parents, children, and youth.
- Ability to work independently, self-motivate, and manage a full caseload.
- Valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and reliable access to transportation.
Knowledge & Abilities:
- Willingness to learn California statutory and constitutional law, including Welfare & Institutions Code, Evidence Code, Civil Procedure, and case law.
- Strong research skills and ability to analyze and apply legal principles quickly.

The annual base salary for this position is $165,000 to $195,000. Depending on billable hours, total compensation can range from $207,000 at the lower end of the salary range to $245,000 at the higher end.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage and litigate complex trust, estate, and conservatorship disputes, including but not limited to:
- Will and trust contests (e.g., undue influence, lack of capacity, fraud)
- Breach of fiduciary duty claims against trustees, executors, and conservators
- Petitions for instructions and accountings
- Spousal property petitions
- Elder abuse actions (financial and physical)
- Conservatorship contested matters
- Probate and trust administration disputes
- Conduct legal research and analysis, draft pleadings, motions, and briefs.
- Handle all aspects of discovery, including propounding and responding to written discovery, and taking/defending depositions.
- Prepare for and attend court hearings, mediations, arbitrations, and trials.
- Communicate effectively with clients, opposing counsel, and court personnel.
- Develop and implement effective case strategies.
- Collaborate with partners and other attorneys on complex matters.
- Mentor junior attorneys and support staff as needed.
- Maintain accurate time records and ensure compliance with billing requirements.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Active membership in good standing with the California State Bar.
- 5+ years of demonstrable experience specializing in California Trust & Estates Litigation.
- Strong understanding of the California Probate Code, related statutes, and case law.

Represent mortgage servicer and investor clients in residential and commercial foreclosure, title and general real estate litigation, including consumer claims directly against the firm’s clients. This position includes, but is not limited to, making appearances in state and federal court for routine and contested hearings, reviewing incoming litigation and developing case strategy, drafting documents, conducting discovery, trials and evidentiary hearings, state and federal appeals, and settlement negotiations. Position is primarily in-office although hybrid or fully remote opportunities may be available for an exceptionally qualified candidate.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage and handle case load of contested foreclosures, defensive litigation and ancillary matters on behalf of mortgage servicers and investors.
- Analyze loan files, title reports, and other client documents.
- Draft motions, pleadings, settlement agreements, discovery demands and responses.
- Appear in court for settlement, case management conferences, motion arguments, trials, hearings and appeals.
- Communicate with clients to ensure quality representation and implementation of all client directives, including electronic communication through various online portals used by clients.
