In alignment with Gift of Life Michigan's core purpose and core values, the Tissue Procurement Specialist I will recover musculoskeletal and dermis tissue from deceased donors throughout the state, in addition to acquiring placental tissue from authorizing birth mothers. The individual in this role also maintains stock and cleanliness of our surgical center recovery suites, coordinates receipt and release of donors, reviews medical records, conducts physical examination of donors, draws blood, preparing the recovery site, preparing the donor for recovery, recovering tissue, maintaining a sterile environment, to include aseptic technique.
Duties & Responsibilities
The following job duties and responsibilities are stated in broad terms and not intended to be inclusive. Those in bold are essential duties of the position:
- Aseptically excise musculoskeletal, dermis, and related tissues.
- Acquire and aseptically package placental tissue (may include travel).
- Aseptically package recovered tissue for shipping according to protocols.
- Aseptically perform gowning and gloving.
- Review pertinent medical records for accuracy, verify donor identification and authorization, and evaluate donor suitability.
- Prepare all storage, prep solution(s), donor, and recovery site.
- Perform physical assessment of donor and obtain blood samples for serologic testing and/or medical examiner specimens.
- Receipt and release of donors at Ann Arbor facility in accordance with Gift of Life policy.
- Remain current with Gift of Life's tissue processors' policies, U.S. Food and Drug Administration Good Tissue Practices, American Association of Tissue Bank standards, and industry regulations.
- Maintain clinical expertise in tissue recovery, in accordance with applicable standards.
- Maintain stock and cleanliness of recovery suites and prep room.

Required
- Associate degree in biological sciences, emergency medical technician (EMT) certification, or paramedic certification plus six months' experience as an allied health professional, funeral assistant, or medicolegal death investigator, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred
- Prior experience in a healthcare organization, transplant center, or organ/tissue procurement organization.

Position Summary
The Global Trade & Duty Drawback Specialist will be responsible for coordinating, maintaining, and executing a compliant duty drawback program while maximizing duty recovery opportunities. This role will oversee the collection and analysis of import/export documentation, manage drawback claims, and ensure compliance with U.S. Customs regulations.
The position will also play a key role in identifying potential tariff reimbursement opportunities, including those resulting from recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions and regulatory developments, ensuring the company captures all eligible duty recovery opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
Duty Drawback Program Management
- Coordinate, maintain, and execute a compliant duty drawback program, including data and document collection (import, export, receiving, manufacturing, etc.) and auditing prior to claim submissions.
- Prepare and file drawback submissions and ensure timely submission of claims with appropriate documentation.
- Direct and manage the workload of the duty drawback broker, ensuring accurate and complete data is provided.
- Review company import/export activity to maximize duty recovery opportunities.
- Monitor drawback bond sufficiency and work with Customs Regulatory teams to make adjustments as required.
- Manage and document drawback refunds, ensuring accurate allocation to business units and reporting to Finance.
Trade Compliance & Tariff Strategy

- Maintain awareness of regulatory updates, court rulings, and federal policy changes impacting global trade and duty drawback programs.
- Evaluate the potential impact of South American duty structures and trade regulations on company import/export operations.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Drive process improvements in collaboration with Manufacturing, Accounting, and Finance to maximize refund recovery per manufactured unit.

Qualifications

WHAT IS BIRTH TISSUE DONATION?
Did you know your baby’s birth tissue could be used to benet someone else? Often, the birth tissue is discarded along with medical waste. But with your donation, this same birth tissue can help dozens of others.
Placenta donation, or birth tissue recovery, is a program of Sierra Donor Services that utilizes the birth tissue’s remarkable ability to heal. After the baby’s birth, the birth tissue’s cellular components and amniotic membrane can be repurposed to create products for wound healing, scar tissue repair, and wound tissue regeneration.
Birth tissue can be used for face and eye injuries, burns, oral surgeries, spine surgeries, diabetic foot ulcers, leg ulcers, bed sores, and a variety of other soft tissue healing.
Below are some of the key accountabilities this position will hold:
- Corresponds with hospitals and birthing centers to coordinate onsite birth tissue recovery initiatives. Travels by car to assigned facilities to provide appropriate recovery and education support.
- Initiates the donation discussion for placenta donation with new moms prior to delivery. Provides education on how the mother's new baby can be Life's Little Helper!
- Coordinates birth tissue donation process by obtaining informed consent, completing the Donor Risk Assessment Interview, and determines suitability.
- Acquires donated birth tissue using proper aseptic techniques and personal protective equipment.
- Enters timely and accurate medical records in electronic database.
- Collaborates and maintains effective communication with nurses, obstetricians, and other medical personnel.
- Performs other duties as assigned
SCHEDULE: This position is generally Monday - Friday position - but may require the occasional weekend if a delivery is prescheduled.
The ideal candidate will have the following attributes:
- High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.
- Two years tissue banking or related experience or surgical operating room experience.
