Job Summary

The Cardiac Catheterization Lab RN is a specialized staff nurse who plays a key role in providing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures. This includes patient assessment, administering medications, assisting physicians during procedures, monitoring vital signs, and ensuring patient safety throughout the perioperative process. The RN also provides patient education, supports recovery, and collaborates closely with the multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality cardiac care. This role requires call on a rotating basis during nights, weekends and holidays. In addition to requirements below, must have current ACLS.

Core Job Responsibilities

• Identify patient care requirements establishing personal rapport with patients and families and understanding of plan of care throughout the patient’s experience.

• Protect patients, employees by adhering to infection control policies and protocols, medication administration and controlled substance regulations. Utilize universal precautions and practice at all times.

• Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures rules, and regulations; calling for assistance from health care staff.

• Document patient care service by charting in patients’ medical records accurately and timely in accordance with licensure and regulatory/hospital standards.

• Maintain continuity of care with the nursing team by communicating plan of care and follow through with multidisciplinary team ensuring that patient administration of care for all services provided are organized, planned and delivered.

• Maintain patient confidence and protect operations by keeping information confidential.

• Maintain nursing supplies inventory checking stock to determine inventory and PAR level; anticipating needs supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies, verifying receipt of supplies; using equipment and supplies; using equipment to accomplish job.

• Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, mandatory in-services; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

• The nurse participates in the advancement of the profession through contributions to practice, education, administration, and knowledge development.

• Engage in quality improvement initiatives including continuing education, participation in hospital-wide and unit specific teams, identifying nursing practice areas for quality improvement and safe outcomes.

• Maintain a cooperative relationship among the healthcare team by communicating information; responding to request; building rapport; participating in team problem solving.

• Provide service excellence to patients and their families/visitors that meets or exceeds patient expectations through offering empathetic and compassionate patient-centered care.

Education/Experience Requirements

REQUIRED:

- Graduate of an accredited nursing program with an associate’s degree.
- Current New York State licensure as a Registered Nurse

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Bachelor of Science in Nursing from accredited nursing program or higher degree.
- ACLS and Basic Life Support certification.
- Critical care or prior cath lab experience.
- One or more years of experience in related setting.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

REQUIRED:

- Current licensure as a registered nurse in NY State.
- BCLS and ACLS required or obtained immediately after hire.

Job Summary:

The Surgical Technologist functions under the direction of the registered professional nurse. Assists the health care team in providing safe, age appropriate and culturally aware patient care. Exhibits an acquisition of additional surgical skills for progressively more difficult cases. Demonstrates an efficient, organized surgical plan for assigned cases. Takes initiative to discuss surgical plan with other members of the healthcare team. Able to troubleshoot instruments and equipment. Anticipates any additional supplies or equipment required for procedures. Ability to mentor, precept or train in various modalities. Participates in performance improvement initiatives. Duties include, but are not limited to, preparation of the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment while being vigilant for the maintenance of the sterile field and other patient safety concerns. POSITION PURPOSE

Provides and directs safe, effective, and culturally competent care for patients with acute medical and surgical conditions. The Acute Care RN manages a diverse patient population with varying levels of acuity, including post-operative, medical, telemetry, and neurologic patients. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Conducts an initial assessment to gather data.

  • Makes an initial assessment of new admissions within 30 minutes of the patient’s arrival to the unit.
  • Completes all areas of the admission assessment database within 24 hours of admission.

2. Identifies patient problems and develops them into an outcome/goal-based plan of care.

  • Initiates the patient problem list and incorporates relevant medical history into the plan of care.
  • Analyzes and interprets the assessment data to identify desired patient outcomes/goals.
  • Determines nursing interventions to achieve those outcomes/goals.
  • Prioritizes patient care needs/ activities.
  • Identifies and makes appropriate referrals (i.e., Patient/Family Services, Nutritional Services, Spiritual Care, Diabetic Educator, etc.), and education needs.
  • Collaborates with other health care disciplines to plan interventions/ patient outcomes/goals.

3. Implements the outcome/goal- based plan of care.

  • Assigns and coordinates patient care incorporating patient acuity and the skills, knowledge and abilities of the team members.
  • Organizes and prioritizes care for the patients within the team.
  • Delegates tasks appropriately to other team members.
  • Implements the plan of care including procedures, treatments, physicians orders, nursing orders, education plan and medications.
  • Coordinates implementation of plan of care with the Case Manager, Social Worker and other health care disciplines.

4. Evaluates patient progress and revises the outcome/goal-based plan as needed.

  • Evaluates patient response(s) to interventions.
  • Review/modifies/revises the outcome-based plan of care based on ongoing reassessments.
  • Updates the problem list and outcomes/goals.

5. Communicates relevant clinical information to the team to optimize patient outcomes/goals.

  • Communicates relevant clinical information to physicians regarding the patient’s condition.
  • Reports progress toward outcomes/goals and/or changes in condition to other health team members.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with interdisciplinary team members throughout the shift, at shift change, and transfer of care.
  • Communicates with other team leaders and members throughout the shift to reassess and prioritize the needs of the unit.
  • Documents completely, comprehensively and legibly and in accordance with policy.

6. Demonstrates clinical competence.

  • Utilizes Patient Care Policies and Procedure as references to guide nursing practice.
  • Assures medication safety by following the “5 Rights” of medication administration.
  • Prioritizes and implements intervention according to patient assessment.
  • Demonstrates competency in computer systems and applications required for role.
  • Receives, transcribes and processes and implements physician orders per policy including dating, timing and verifying accuracy.
  • Maintains communication with the manager/house supervisor and staffing office regarding admissions, unit needs, acuity numbers and significant events.
  • Completes assigned shift duties and assures resolution of discrepancies.

7. Manages telemetry and cardiac monitoring when applicable.

  • Demonstrates clinical competency and technical knowledge in cardiac rhythm interpretation and telemetry monitoring.
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to cardiac arrhythmias and other changes in patient condition.
  • Must be capable of managing multiple patients requiring continuous cardiac monitoring.
  • Provides appropriate interventions for patients experiencing cardiac events or changes in rhythm.
  • May be required to assist with data collection and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Must be willing to serve as a resource to other hospital services (nursing, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, respiratory, etc.).
  • May be asked to participate in unit-based committees and provide education to nursing staff as requested.

8. Based on principles of growth and development, provides care appropriate to the age-related needs of the patients served on his/her assigned unit.
