• Establishes mechanisms for the reporting of monitoring and assessment data for the purpose of identification of problems and opportunities to improve patient care services, determination of strategies to solve problems or improve services, implementation of appropriate actions, and evaluation of effectiveness of these actions.
• Assists in the development of appropriate forms for data collection and analysis.
• Assists in constructing focused assessment studies when problems or opportunities are identified to improve patient care services.
• Coordinates individual Medical staff Departmental and Committee activities for reporting at designated time intervals.
• Maintains centralized records of all Performance Improvement activities pertaining to the Medical Staff to ensure ready access for review and follow-up.
• Assists in compiling summarized reports of Performance Improvement activities to include Medical staff and Hospital activities to the Board of Trustees, Hospital Administration, the Medical staff, and appropriate committees on a regular basis.
• Reviews medical records according to criteria and identified outcomes data.

The Pediatric Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) Registered Nurse delivers high-quality, patient-centered care to pediatric patients undergoing cardiovascular surgical procedures. This role requires specialized clinical expertise and a deep understanding of the unique needs of pediatric cardiac patients. The RN collaborates closely with pediatric cardiovascular surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and the broader perioperative team to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate care throughout the surgical continuum. Utilizing established nursing frameworks such as “Assess, Perform, Teach, and Manage,” the RN provides individualized care that supports optimal surgical outcomes. The RN advocates for the safety and well-being of patients and their families, ensuring that care is developmentally appropriate and emotionally supportive. This role also upholds the organization’s mission, vision, and values by fostering a culture of excellence, teamwork, and continuous improvement in the pediatric CVOR environment. 

Position Details: 

• Self/preferential scheduling posted four weeks in advance for you to have predictability in your schedule 
• Culture of mutual respect and collaboration among all surgical staff 
• Continuous investment in equipment including surgical instruments, devices and patient positioning for you to do your best work with patient safety and workflow efficiency in the Operating Room 
• Rounding with unit leaders, including charge nurses, to ensure your voice is heard on suggestions for patient care and surgical workflow improvement 
• On-call is required during select non-business hours 

What you will do in this role: 

• You will evaluate patients prior to surgery 
• You will provide patient and family education surrounding the procedure and peri-operative process
• You will assume responsibility for patient preparation, including intravenous therapy, preoperative medications, and surgical site verification 
• You will participate in surgical site verification, including briefing, time out, debriefing, and universal protocols, according to hospital policy 
• You will recognize and respond to patient emergencies 
• You will deliver high-quality, patient-centered care while managing evidence-based practices and continuous improvement initiatives 
• You will be an integral member of a dynamic interdisciplinary team – consisting of the provider(s), surgeons, surgical technologists and more 
• You will consistently apply the nursing process, critical thinking skills, scientific judgment, technical skills and leadership to independently deliver safe nursing care to patients

What You Will Do In Your Role:

• You will have an understanding of aseptic technique and apply the knowledge in assuring maintenance of a sterile field and in assisting in a procedure or prepping a patient for surgery.
• You will demonstrate knowledge of which areas need to be prepped for the different kinds of procedure.
• You will assess the patient prior to surgery and establish that the patient understands the procedure being done and that a “timeout” be done prior to any procedure with the rest of the perioperative team.
• You will demonstrate teamwork, adaptability, and serve as a resource to the Surgical Services team.
• You will have accountability for delivering quality nursing care services and for promoting a positive image of nursing.

What qualifications you will need:

• Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing is required. BSN is preferred.
• Current Registered Nurse License in the State of Texas or Multi-State Compact License (Employees with RN Compact License are required to obtain Texas RN License within 90 days of hire date).
• Current BLS and ACLS Certification are required.
• 1-year of clinical experience as a licensed RN required - [Operating Room, OR, CVOR, Perioperative Services, Surgery, Surgical Center, Ambulatory, Outpatient]

• You will perform direct patient care within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act, with emphasis on the critically ill patient with Congenital Heart Disease and/or Surgery

What will you do in this role:

• You will assess patient condition during admission and during each shift as scheduled and/or as needed, identifying and reporting any changes in patient status.
• You will assess patient environment for any safety risks and/or non-compliance with regulatory standards.
• You will assess patient pain regularly to promote effective pain management, including reassessments after appropriate intervention.
• You will assess patient condition for signs and symptoms of abuse or neglect. Reports any indications of abuse or neglect to medical provider(s), nurse leader, and/or appropriate agency.
• You will perform procedures, monitoring, or other functions as ordered by the medical provider(s). Documents the administration of care in the patient medical record in a timely and thorough manner. 

• Associate Degree in Nursing or RN Diploma required
• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred
• < 1 year applicable experience 
•  Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the state(s) of practice and/or has an active compact license, in accordance with law and regulation.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) required
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) obtain within 60 days 
• Certification in Electronic Fetal Monitoring (C-EFM)
• S.T.A.B.L.E. Certification obtain within 6 months
