Job Description

The Monarch Transit Driver is responsible for driving the campus shuttles on all regularly scheduled routes, special event routes, and supplementing the SafeRide driving staff. The drivers will provide safe and hospitable transport for University community members and guests. Drivers will communicate department and University information as the first point of contact representing the office of Transportation and Parking Services for passengers on board Monarch Transit vehicles. Drivers will assist the Daytime and Evening Transportation Supervisors in filling driver and route schedules, as well as assist in the driving for special event services provided with the use of Monarch Transit vehicles. Drivers will be responsive to changes and alterations in scheduled and unexpected service operations.

Conditions of Employment

Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia Class C Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) Endorsement. Must have and maintain an insurable driving record in accordance with University and state regulation. Must be available to work daytime and afternoon shifts, including weekends (Monday through Sunday. Must be able and willing to operate vehicles during inclement weather events, including snow, rain, and other adverse condition. Must be willing to work during Special Events, including but not limited to Football Games, Commencement Ceremonies, and other University-sponsored activities as assignedThis is an open until filled recruitment. Incumbents are responsible for the care, custody, control, and transportation of a detainee population during an assigned shift. Specific duties include transporting arrestees and detainees to/from state prison, doctor appointments, holding cells, jails, and courts, serving court orders and serving hospital guard duty, transportation of IVC's to and from hospitals. Assisting Detention Officers with the booking and supervision of detainees.

Purpose of the position:

This position's primary responsibility is for the transport of inmates to and from Federal Court, hospitals, dentist, doctor appointments and any other inmate transportation needs and to perform a variety of duties pertaining to the safety and security of inmates in the custody of the County Detention Facility.

Minimum Education, Training and/or Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent and completion of NC BLET Course; Must be 21 years of age.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:

Certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the North Carolina Sheriffs' Training and Standards Commission, Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina.

Essential Functions of the position:

• Transports detainees to and from the jail, county courthouse, holding cells, and doctor's visits, ensuring care, custody, and control of detainees
• Prepares a variety of paperwork, logs, and/or related documentation
• Conducts searches of detainees to ensure safety of Officers and the public
• Participates in training sessions related to safety, security, firearms and procedures
• Work any post, assignment, or shift to support the 24-hour per day, 7-day a week operation. This includes nights, weekends, and holidays; and when the need arises, adjust their schedule to accomplish a mission or operational need

• Utilizes Transportation software to create and manage transportation schedules for external vendors and Transcare when needed.
• Acts as a point of contact to external vendors for transportation needs and scheduling rides for participants.

This position is responsible for vehicle delivery and returning vehicles to Penske locations and Penske customers. Primarily, this position moves our box trucks up to 26' and for CDL Class A will include tractors and trailer movement. Position may also provide assistance to the service department to deliver parts and equipment.

This is a casual/on-call part-time truck driving job that is perfect for licensed CDL Class B or CDL Class A drivers seeking supplemental income and looking to work anywhere from 0 to 25 hours a week based on business needs.
