General Description of the Job Class
The RN OR Scheduler works closely with the Perioperative team (including, but not limited to, OR team members and leadership, Anesthesia leadership, and other Support Services) to coordinate daily OR scheduling. The position assists with managing and building the OR schedule while collaborating with surgeon offices and nurse leaders to optimize the OR schedule for efficient and safe patient flow.
Shift: Day shift, Monday-Friday 7:30a-4pm. No holidays or weekends. Will work with multiple surgical specialties including, but not limited to: Ophthalmology, Urology, Orthopedics, Gynecology, Endoscopy, Spine, Plastics, Urology, Colorectal, etc.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Completion of the first step of Universal Protocol.
Scheduling OR events and consistently analyzing schedule to maximize efficiency and productivity.
Utilizing chart reviews to verify critical elements including but not limited to: provider, location, procedure date, patient class, Case Consent Wording, ICD & CPT, laterality, positioning, anesthesia type, case classification, diagnosis codes, pre-op visit completion, and surgeon privileging confirmation.
Leading scheduling meetings to collaborate with key stakeholders and team members and influence operational excellence.
Orientation of new hires to the department.
Running reports and completing data analysis frequently to maximize schedule execution.
Using strong critical thinking, communication and nursing knowledge to ensure surgical patient safety.
Review and complete all required elements of an OR case request in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures.
Use professional nursing judgment to individualize the plan of care based on assessment of special needs and added comments.
Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings.
Act as preceptor and support the development of other staff, including providers and their clinic staff in the scheduling and block time request process.
Participate in the identification of clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
As an administrative nurse with Duke University Health System, you will make providing service your priority while prioritizing patient-centered outcomes. Utilize the nursing process (assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating) in achieving the goals of the OR scheduling process. Participate in educational activities, departmental committees, research and/or quality improvement projects or other perioperative related projects as assigned. Adhere to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education: Work requires graduation from an accredited BSN program. Exception: Registered nurses hired after July 1, 2014 without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) are expected to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date but must complete the program within five years of their start date. Registered nurses hired before July 1, 2014 are not required to enroll in a BSN program to remain in this job classification.
Experience: Previous operating room experience required, 2+ years preferred. Previous surgeon clinic nursing or paranesthesia experience preferred.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification: Current registration with the North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required. BLS (or higher) certification required. Professional specialty certification preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of scope of the Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Surgical Technologist, and Advanced Practice Provider. Knowledge of and appropriate application of the nursing process. Knowledge of professional theory, practice, and procedure. Ability to assess nursing needs of perioperative patients and their families. Ability to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership and others. Ability to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, act, and follow-up. Ability to use fine motor skills. Competent in BLS and/or other specialized life support requirements designated by work area. Ability to use computer and learn new software programs. Able to document and communicate pertinent information using computer and/or paper documentation tools. Ability to navigate the entity. Ability to remain focused and organized. Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in the OR, including new equipment, the addition of equipment and other additional resources. Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions. Working knowledge and completion of appropriate Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements. The Care Partner is a support care provider who functions under the direction of the Registered Nurse. The Care Partner primary focus will be to promote a positive patient experience by partnering with the nurse, physician, healthcare team and other healthcare providers to provide excellence in patient experience; and assist with daily living activities and comfort measures. The Care Partner assists other health care providers with safe, age appropriate and culturally aware care by performing basic patient care functions; i.e. ADL's, ambulation, and vital signs.The Care Partner may require approved advanced technical training skills may be required i.e. phlebotomy, simple treatments, dressing changes, oral suctioning, and discontinuing Foley catheters. Performing additional advanced skills may be required to support clinical care and will fluctuate depending on the needs of the unit. Performing clerical functions such as: retrieval of data, maintaining unit supplies, and transporting supplies/patient medications will be required. The Care Partner must be able to work in a fast-paced environment which requires multi-tasking and effective communication with the Registered Nurse and ancillary team. Position Summary
Perform high-quality obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound examinations and procedures. Become well-trained in the use and daily maintenance of the ultrasound imaging and recording system used in the department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.
- For gynecologic ultrasound examinations and procedures: Sets up ultrasound and procedure equipment; positions patient appropriately; operates ultrasound with or without physician guidance when appropriate (including but not limited to SIS)
- For obstetric ultrasound examinations and procedures: Sets up ultrasound and procedure equipment; positions patient appropriately; operates ultrasound with or without physician guidance when appropriate (including but not limited to, amniotic fluid assessment, fetal viability, limited – detailed – and complete obstetric ultrasound, biometry and fetal wellbeing assessments, fetal Doppler studies, fetal echocardiograms, CVS, amniocentesis, first-trimester screening). Processes and labels samples for laboratory submission.
- Generates reports on examinations and procedures and ensures that they are sent to the referring physician.
- Submits billing for patients with appropriate codes for diagnoses and procedures.
- Demonstrates techniques and procedures to students and residents as assigned through the Department of OB/GYN.
- Performs decontamination on equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Graduation from an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program
Licensure
- Current and valid certification in Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) to perform first-trimester nuchal translucency for risk assessment must be obtained within one year of hire.
- Current and valid certification in OB/GYN with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
Experience
- A minimum of 2 years of experience as an Ultrasound Technologist.
Physical Requirements
- Stand, walk, and reach above the shoulder frequently in a clinical setting.
- Must be able to occasionally lift and carry or push and pull up to 100 lbs. as part of the role
- Regularly exposed to healthcare settings that may require personal protective equipment
- Requires manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, calculator, copier machine, and other equipment.

- Experience with methods, tools and measurements for quality improvement to improve work processes using a team-based model.
- Knowledge of regulations and standards of JCAHO, CAP and CLIA.
- Ability to work independently and make reliable recommendations and diagnoses as definitive in the care and treatment of patients.
- Knowledge of all hospital and service procedures and policies regarding hazardous material management, biohazard exposure and the use of universal precaution.
Job Responsibilities (Include But Not Limited To):
- Patient care services, for patients at UMH (University of Miami Hospital), JMH (Jackson Memorial Hospital) and satellites and SCCC (Sylvester Cancer Comprehensive Center) and satellites. Patient care service responsibilities will be focused on the assigned specialty or specialties
- Gross description, taking photographs of the specimens when indicated, tissue sampling, microscopic examinations of surgical specimens, reporting of findings, and verifying coding diagnosis in the computer, in a timely manner(when applicable).
- Performing Frozen Section diagnoses in a timely manner (when applicable).
- Performing and reporting autopsies in a timely manner (when applicable).
- 24 hours call coverage according to assigned division/s (when applicable).
- Service productivity will be assigned according to the departmental compensation plan, previously approved by UHealth Compensation Committee.
- Participate in educational activities of pathology residents and fellows.
- Participate in educational activities of medical students.
- Participate in collaborative research opportunity to purse basic/clinical or applied research, collaborate with other investigators throughout the Medical Center and seek sponsored programs funding from grants and contracts.
- Participate in daily quality assurance and in the Department of Pathology hospital committees and working groups.
- Maintain high standards of professional services so that the Department of Pathology will maintain the JCAHO/CAP/CLIA accreditation.
