Description Summary: Under the supervision and/or direction of the Registered Nurse, the Nurse Extern II performs various direct patient care activities in accordance with the Nursing Department policies and procedures.
The Nurse Extern II can assist with the care of hospitalized patients.
The Nurse Extern II may be assigned other functions in accordance with hospital/department policies, procedures, and protocols.
Responsibilities: Life-threatening situations are readily identified and reported to the R.N.
Initiates and assists with basic life support when needed.

Qualifications

Is trained to perform processing blood and other body fluids, send outs, and other tests as required. Obtains blood samples from the correct patient, ensuring that the blood is properly drawn and labeled following established procedures to assure the proper specimen for the requested testing. Is trained to become competent at venipunctures and skin punctures. May register and interview patients, obtaining accurate demographic and financial information. May be required to verify medical necessity for all Medicare patients.

* Performs daily phlebotomy procedures and tests on a fluctuating work schedule. Obtains an adequate specimen on all patients, including correct timed specimens when indicated.
* Observes established personnel policies, OSHA requirements, and lab procedures to ensure safe practice.
* Assures proper identification of patient and specimens in accordance with established laboratory identification procedures, and cares for patients promptly and courteously.

- Reports patient/family-related problems, i.e., patient's dissatisfaction/refusal of nursing care routines; departure from activity advancements or restrictions.
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of the aseptic/sterile technique. Follows universal precautions.
- Records information accurately and promptly. Reports change in patient's condition and/or vital signs.
- Assists with laboratory specimens, i.e., collection or delivery.
- Complies with timekeeping system. Accrues no unexcused absences, and no more than three unscheduled absences.
- Uses supplies and equipment appropriately documents use in the medical record and records charges appropriately.
- Participates in 80% of prescribed in-service programs and departmental meetings.
- When unable to attend (20% max) follow up to obtain information discussed.
- Follows hospital and/or unit policy for dress and personal hygiene.
- Follows necessary safety precautions, hospital policies, and departmental policies.
- Attends infection control and safety programs.
- Follows hospital policies and/or departmental rules.
- Follows the CHRISTUS Health Guidelines related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).
- Associate timely completes all required educational requirements.
Requirements:
Education/Skills
- Nurse Extern II - students in RN school in clinicals
- Currently enrolled in a nursing program to obtain either an associate degree or bachelor's degree to become a registered nurse
- Must have completed their first hospital clinical rotation and be in good standing in the nursing program
- Proficient in basic nursing tasks
Experience
- Six (6) months of experience in patient care preferred
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications
- AHA BLS required within 2 weeks of employment
- Provides updated transcript at beginning of semester
